Abstract

Nowadays, Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) is mostly developed for surveillance purpose, either for military or civilian. In this article, a design and building of a MAV will be presented. A tailless configuration was chosen. The design and build process started with a study of several design parameters of existing MAVs. Then, it is followed by initial sizing, detail design and production of the MAV. In general, the designed MAV could meet the design requirements and objectives stated. Some preliminary tests had shown that the basic flying characteristics was sufficiently good, although further development still has to be done. The design and build process was also able to evaluate the implementation of some aircraft design formula and method being implemented to design MAV.

Abstract

Any rolling bearing defect has a certain vibration response signature which can be observed through its waveform as well as frequency spectrum, such as the sideband frequencies, which indicate there is modulation phenomena among the vibration response signals. This research was carried out to study the vibration response signatures in the roll bearings due to the interaction between the static load and bearing inner/outer race waviness. This experimental research consists of FRF (Frequency Response Function) measurements to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the rolling bearing vibration, and power spectrum testing to measure the vibration response that occurs in the bearing. The shaft speed and static loads (vertical, horizontal, combination) are varied during the experimental study. Experimental results reveal Roll Passage Frequency (RPF) and its sidebands caused by the static load, and it was also found that waviness in the order of 4 at  the inner race and in the order of 6 at the outer race of the bearing.

Abstract

Welded joints loaded cyclically are prone to fatigue because they provide srress concentrations due to geometry changes, weld profile shapes and microscopic defects in the welds". Allowable stresses for welded joints under cycliuzlly loading must be based on empirical values.

Abstract

Additional concern about warming of the global environment through the greenhouse effect has necessitated selection of compounds with shorter atmospheric lifetimes and higher energy efficiencies as substitute refligerants for Heating, Air Conditioning, and refrigerating equipment.Several substitute compounds of the hidrocarbon were identified by similarities in normal boiling points and corresponding saturated vapor pressure characteristics. Sample quantities were obtained from ITB (Two sample corresponds with CFCIZ named Hycool HCRI2 and Hycool HCR12+LFS). Performance comparisons among these refrigerants are performed utilizing Air Conditioning System test facility in Laboratory for Thermodynamics, Engines and Propulsion System (LIMP – BPP Teknologi). The results show that these alternatives refrigerants exhibit better performance than CFC I 2 at the predetermined operating conditions.

Abstract

Abstract

In this research, mixed mode loading testing of actylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin was carried out by using a compact tension shear specimen which was attached to a special loading device. The angle between the loading axis and the crack surface was varied from 90o (Mode I) to 0° (Mode I1). Two types of ABS resin were examined. The first one (ABS-I) has a butadiene rubber content of 18 wt % in the form of small particles of diameter about 200 nm. The second one (ABS-2) has the same overall butadiene rubber content but a bimodal particle distribution with diameters of 200 nm and 500 nm. Crack initiation and propagation was observed by using a video microscope. The results show that the fracture angle for both materials under mixed mode loading coincides with the values predicted by the maximum hoop stress criterion. To obtain the stress intensity flzctors, numerical analyses of compact-tension-shear specimen were conducted using a two dimensional finite element analysis. Fracture behavior of ABS resins under mixed mode loading was almost the same as that under mode I loading for lower value of mode 11 component. However, for higher mode II component, shear type fracture occurred at initial crack tip.

Abstract

The current research was carried out to study the change of stress intensity factor (KI) on the semielliptical cracked crank subject to a constant amplitude cyclic loading. This research was also carried out to find the fatigue crack propagation model, the critical crack depth and to predict the fatigue life. The study was performed by using computer modeling and simulation, verified by series of fatigue tests on 15 mm diameter rod specimens made of AISI 1045 steel. The crack (0.5 mm) was introduced on the specimen surfaces as a crack initiation site. The result shows that, for the same crack depth, the higher the loading magnitude, the higher the stress intensity factor, and also, at the end of the crack propagation, semi-elliptical crack tends to be semi-circular one, or a/c ratio approaching unity (1.0). The fatigue experiment has been successfully verified that the critical crack depth and the fatigue life lie within 89% to 92% accuracy, and 8% to 10% deviation , respectively, compared to those obtained by the computer simulation. Fractography study has also revealed that the fracture path consist of; i) crack initiation site, ii) crack propagation, as indicated by beach mark, and iii) the final fracture.
