Abstract

Abstract

The need to increase operational speed and reduce the inertia effects led to the design of slender members. Consequently, elasticity of these members could no longer be neglected. The elasticity results in varying stiffness of the elastic member leading to parametric excitation. The dynamic behavior of an elastic coupler of a four-bar mechanism is investigated. The governing equation is nonlinear, partial differential equation with time-varying parameters. Perturbation method is employed to linearize the equation and the dynamic response is obtained using a closed-form numerical solution algorithm constructed through the discretization of the parameters continua. The dynamic stability of the system is evaluated based upon Floquet Theory. The results are presented in the form of parametric stability charts, and the dynamic stability analysis results were validated by a direct-integration method. The response become unstable at several bands of frequency. The effects of external force, damping and ratio of follower-to-coupler mass were examined. Results show that increase in tensile force, damping, and the mass ratio increased the stability of the elastic coupler.

Abstract

Pump as Turbine (PaT) tested from mixed flow pump type with 250 mm bore diameter, and impeller tip has a minimum modification by rounded the blade, which could improve the efficiency of 2% to 6%. The modification is done by rounded the impeller tip with 2 mm radius. Tested Pump as Turbine at 1000 rpm has an efficiency about 82% and 10 kW power output. The best power produced by 250 mm bore Pump as Turbine is 25 kW at the 75% efficiency. The 15 meters head may have the runaway speed of the Pump as Turbine on asymptotic level at 2500 rpm. The pump as turbine could utilized as Micro Hydro Power driver in the low cost, compare with Francis turbine design and development cost, which is mass production of the pumps and abundant at the market.

Abstract

Flow field at the inlet of a combustor under the influence of swirler vanes was investigated computationally. The isothermal flow was examined to predict the combustion stability. The simulations indicate different flow-field characteristics can be achieved under the same swirl number. In addition to swirl number, swirl velocity induces the existence of centrifugal force. This force affect velocity profile peak, static pressure profile, radially; and recirculation zone, axially.

Abstract

This research deals with the integration product design phase, the process planning phase, and manufacturing operation planning phase through the feature-based product modeling. The competition in manufacturing industries demands a short production lead time. Autonomous Distributed Manufacturing Systems which has autonomic production elements enable to integrate those three phases through its autonomic product model. One of the proposed methodologies is a feature-based product modeling. At feature base product modeling, a product was defined as a model that is an interaction among features. Product model enable to identify the decreasing or additional volume influence to its geometry. At the final stage of product design, a model product enables to identify all features it’s has, features interaction, and features manufacturing sequences. At this research, G-Code was generated by product model that was designed by using CaSTPro software. The developed product model enriched its functionality with new facility that was a G-Code generation. As an example, G-Code fit for a horizontal machining center Okuma&Howa MILAC 4H FANUC 6M which was equipped with a tool changer and indexing had been developed.

Abstract

This paper discusses a method to optimize the distribution of viscoelastic-damping layer on elastic plate structures. This method is based on well known SUMT (Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique) algorithm. An innovation where elements’ strain energy distribution over the plate structure is used to determine the search direction vector. The method models the two layers damped plate as a single layer damped plate. The mechanical properties of single layer damped plate were determined such that they are equivalent to those of two-layers elasticviscoelastic laminate. MSC/Nastran finite element software was used to calculate the dynamic characteristics and the elements’ strain energy distribution of the single layer plate. The proposed innovation has successfully determined the optimum distribution of viscoelastic material. The results show that the optimum distribution of viscoelastic material on elastic structure is strongly influenced by structural support type and number of modes retained for the analysis.

Abstract

The FLUENT V4.25 program is the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation. It can be used for fluid flow and heat transfer analyses and others. Regarding the program, the test is needed to know the validity, to verify that the program will give good output. Based on the test using experimental data on four heated parallel rod bundles, the output FL UENT V4.25, it gave a good result, where the differences between calculation and experimental data are not significant. It is expected that the FLUENT V4. 25 program may achieve success in thermo-hydraulic analysis on other similar systems.
