Abstract

Children and teenagers are the next generation. They need to be prepared physically, mentally,and spiritually. The movement of mental revolution is one of the ways to build the children andteenagers’ characters and develop their mental. This movement aims at changing the society’s mental.Oral literature or folklores may be used as one of the tools to obtain the goal. Folklores are customs andoral tradition told by mouths from one to another generation. Folklores may contain moral teachings andcharacter building that the future generation may learn about. This article discusses the moral valuerepresented in folklores as media for mental revolution. There are 5 folklores, entitled Bawang Merah danBawang Putih, Lutung Kasarung, Keong Mas, Malin Kundang and Cindelaras. The moral teachings ofthose folklores are be patient, sincere, diligent, honest, hard work, faithful, humble, not easilydiscouraged, helpful, full of forgiveness, ungreedy, never looking down others, and respectful towardparents. The previous mentioned moral teachings may contribute to making true the mental change sincemoral values may function to build a good personality.Keywords: folklor, nilai moral, revolusi mental

Abstract

This article discusses the representation of space and prostitute characters in Indonesianmodern prose. The data were taken from Bumi Manusia, Kembang Jepun, Perempuan Kembang Jepun,Kremil, and Existere. The discussion aims at reconstructing prostitution in Surabaya and analyzing theprostitution related to the social, economic, and political problems. Bumi Manusia portrays a prostitutionmanaged by a Chinese in the era of Dutch colonization. Kembang Jepun and Perempuan Kembang Jepuntaken the colonial time and Japanese occupation as the setting of the novels describes the relationshipbetween prostitution and political issues such as anti-colonial movements and independent struggle. InKremil whose setting is 1960s, one can read the relationship between prostitution and the tragedy of PKI(Indonesian Communist Party). Abstract

Sakai Tsuboi was one the Japanese writers who won rewards. One of his works Nijuushi noHitomi won a lot of appreciation from its readers. In this novel, Tsuboi showed his ideology of passivismor the love for peace and anti-war. The language of Nijuushi no Hitomi succeeded in attracting readers’attention, emotion, and thoughts. There were relationships among the dictions, language style, rethorics,and these relationships did not reduce the writer’s esthetical sense toward the sociohistorical events.Keywords : Estetika, Retorika, Ideologi Pengarang, Gaya Bahasa

Abstract

This paper discusses expressions of emancipation and lexical cohesion analysis of theexpression of emancipation in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. The purpose of this research isto analyze the keywords and expression of emancipation that are used in the novel. The analysis is basedon the theory of lexical cohesion (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). A descriptive qualitative approach isadopted, focusing on the keywords and expressions of emancipation. The study involves 86 data thatcontain the expressions of emancipation. The problems to be investigated in the study are: (1) What arethe main keywords related to the idea of emancipation used in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’Tale?(2) What are the specific expressions related to the main keywords of the idea of emancipationusedin Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’ Tale?, and (3) What kinds of lexical cohesion are shown betweenthe idea of emancipation and the expresions of emancipation in Margareth Atwood’s The Handmaid’sTale? The results of the study show the following points. The concept of emancipation can be analyzedinto 5 keywords and each keyword is related to a number of other lexical items. The keywords are: 1)Gilead consisting 5 other lexical items; 2) Woman according to Margaret Atwood’ The Handmaid’s Taleconsisting 25 other lexical items; 3) Red consisting 11 other lexical items; 4) Commander’s householdconsisting 5 other lexical items; and 5) Mayday consisting 4 other lexical items. This lexical cohesionanalysis discusses each one of the keywords with the consideration of its context and events in the novel.The study also found various types of lexical cohesion used to present the idea of emancipation in thenovel, including repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy. This research is expected to give somedirections as to what lexical cohesion devices are worth analyzing. More studies maybe conducted in thesame field with larger samples and more fictional text types, and with the use of lexical cohesionespecially antonym, synonym, and hyponym.Keywords: lexical cohesion types, emancipation

Abstract

This paper discusses social wisdom, values and attitudes expressed in English proverbs relatedto cow. This paper is a part of an ongoing study on values in English and Indonesian proverbs relatedwith horse, cow, bufallo and donkey. Proverbs are generally identified from its brief and memorablewords or sentences that express truth and reality and in many ocassions express advice reflected fromdaily experiences and general observation that are expressed in a fixed and effective language forms thatthey are memorable and are ready to use as an effective rhetorical device in both oral and writtenlanguage (Mieder, 2004). Proverbs express an awareness of human condition and weakness that voices ofadvice that are expressed in this special language may be sounded with clarity, humour, wit and insights(Barajaz, 2010). The paper reports the descriptive qualitative study on ninety (90) English proverbsrelated to cow. The data of the study are collected from various printed and electronic sources of Englishproverbs. The study found that a number of good wisdom, values and attitudes are taught and transmittedusing cow as the keyword such as the value of acquired over inherited social status, discipline andresponsibility, hardworking, minimizing trouble, habit formation and others. The study may be useful inthe context of English language learning, that English learners may learn the socio-cultural valueswrapped in the daily language expressions such as proverbs.Keywords: English proverbs, socio-cultural values

Abstract

This article discusses the social aspects of geisha in Rei Nakanishi's novel entitled NagasakiBura-bura Bushi. The analysis shows that in carrying out her profession and their living in a socitey, ageisha is portrayed to have the nature of cooperation, competition, and dispute (conflict). In social groups,there are the groups of families and communities (rural and urban). In a society, there are norms ofmanners, habits, behavior patterns, and customs that must be maintained. In the sociology of women,women are not merely be seen in the relationship of marriage and family, but also are viewed in theirroles of their jobs and education. As a human being, geisha may have problems in their lives such ashaving a sense of love, anxiety, suffering, sorrow, and responsibility against themselves, others and Godor spirit or deity. Abstract

The turning of Japaneses family system Ie into Kazoku Kaku affected negatively on the processof interaction and communication within the members of the family, with the neighborhood and amongthe members of society. In turn, it brought about the idea of family rental business in Japan. Nipon TVaired a television drama which portrayed this social phenomenon entitled “Kazoku Kashimasu-familyComplex. This article is exploring the cause of the emergence of this phenomenon as seen the TV drama.This study applied sociological approach. The data in this research are scenes and conversations in a playentitled “Kazoku Kashimasu-family Complex”. The analysis shows that one factor causing thephenomenon of family rental business is the divorce that resulted in the single parent or a single parent.Another factor is the family’s disharmony caused by busyness, self-centered nature, the cold war, and theculture of silence. The change of Japanese family system into the family system Tanshin Setai is reflectedin the life of one of the characters in the television drama “Kazoku Kashimasu”. The representation offamily rental business is reflected by a company called Family Romance founded by Shuji as the maincharacter. The Family Romance is a rental business family which proved a service of rental family for awedding reception, a commemoration of those who have died called Shinobukai, the purposes of schoolenrollment at the famous school, and for a protest to a school on cases of bullying.Keywords : sistem keluarga Jepang, persewaan keluarga, drama televisi, sosiologi sastra

Abstract

Makalah ini membahas dan menganalisis narasi displacement dan keterpinggiran oleh penuliseksil Indonesia yang tinggal di Eropa, terutama di Jerman dan Belanda. Lebih khusus, tulisan ini mencobauntuk melihat bagaimana para penulis ini menggunakan narasi untuk berbagi pengalaman eksil mereka.Ilusi kepulangan selalu hadir dalam tulisan-tulisan orang buangan, dan citra negara asal medominasikarya mereka. Berfokus pada isu dispacement, ketunawismaan (unhomeliness) dan keterpinggiran, artikelini mengkaji pamer diri dalam narasi. Konstruksi-diri saat ini sebagai individu yang lebih sosial antaralain ditandai dengan nostalgia. Kata kunci : narrative, exile, displacement, unhomeliness
