This article discusses a study on the impact of interest in reading academic reference and intellectual level in the Indonesian Navy educational institution. The Navy has a vision to create a world class organization capable of carrying out the defence of Matra Sea. The role of quality human resources becomes a major factor in carrying out assignments. Seskoal as an educational institution of the Navy has the main task of implementing the highest general development education in the Navy, which contributes to improving intellectual level for each of its graduates. The importance of fostering interest in reading English-language reference books and academic culture implementation needs to be realized in connection student officers Dikreg is implementing educational task. The close relationship between the educational process, institutions and student officers a positive impact on meeting the educational goals expected. Based on this background, this study purports to measure how much influence the interest in reading English-language reference books and academic culture on an intellectual level pasis Dikreg Seskoal TP.2019. In this study using quantitative research methods pasis population Dikreg TP. 2019 one hundred and fifty people. The next step to implement the deployment of questionnaires, interviews and data processing using SPSS version 25.

Pemahaman mengenai makna ungkapan perlu dikaji dari perspektif semiotika sebagai ilmu tentang tanda. Makna Ungkapan dapat dipahami apabila relasi petanda dan penanda dapat dijelaskan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan relasi petanda dan penanda dalam ungkapan tradisional masyarakat kerinci dari perspektif semiotika. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Hasil penelitian adalah terdapatnya relasi petanda dan penanda yang bersifat simbolik. Relasi simbolik terjalin berdasarkan ersamaan-persamaan sifat, perilaku, perbuatan, keadaan, dan bentuk yang terdapat pada hewan, tumbuhan, alam, dan manusia.

This article discusses Oka Rusminiâ€™s short story entitled Ketika Perkawinan Harus Dimulai, by utilizing the theory of Feminist - Marxist criticism to identify the portrayal of female characters related to Karl Marxâ€™s class conflict and alienation. The discussion aimed to reveal that woman subordination is the result of social relations, and that menâ€™s efforts to achieve their demands for control of womenâ€™s labor and sexual faculties have been delivered in the literary work. The analysis showed that the main character in the story struggled in her life in holding on to her commitment to prove that women can live for herself without being controlled by others. Therefore, Ketika Perkawinan Harus Dimulai is a critique towards patriarchal ideology and oppression towards women.

This study discusses beauty discourse in the era of Romanticism. Beauty discourse was produced through Byron poems from 1813-1815. Byron was one of the leading figures in the Romantic movement who was influential at the time. We use three Byron poems as the main data for this study. These poems are She Walks in Beauty (1814), Sonnet to Genevra (1813), and Stanzas for Music (1815). The concept of beauty produced by the three poems above connects physical beauty and intellectual beauty with natural elements as one of the great themes of the Romanticism era. The concept of beauty at that time was closely related to the romantic society of England. Referring to this reason, Stuart Hall's representation theory and discursive approach by Michel Foucault are used as a tool to analyze the above problems. The results of this study indicate that the concept of beauty in the romantic era (1) emphasizes intellectual beauty or beyond the physical itself as a concept of beauty in that era. In addition, three concepts of beauty, physical beauty, intellectual beauty, and natural beauty will always lead to divine beauty, where all life comes from Him, and (2) The three poems make beauty an instrument to criticize the presence of the industrial revolution at that time which is considered to cause chaos in romantic life.

This research is an attempt to study Tan Twang Engâ€™s The Gift of Rain through the lense of Julia Kristevaâ€™s concept of foreignness. The Gift of Rain exposes the story Philip Hutton, a half-Chinese and half-English young man who struggles to determine where he belongs to. The aims of this study is to investigate foreignness experienced by Philip and its impacts to Philipâ€™s life. In additition, qualitative descriptive method is applied to analyze the topic. From the analysis of the protagonist, it is revealed that his sense of foreignness at home, religion as well as race emerge due to the death of his mother which leaves him to be the only Chinese in his English family. In addition, it is also influenced by the way others see and judge his multiple identities. Thus, living within two worldsâˆ’English and Chineseâˆ’ makes Philip mistakenly believe that no one will accept him fully for he is just an outsider, belongs to nowhere. Marriage is one of the culture universals being that it is contracted in every society of the world, but its mode of contract varies from one society to the other. Marriage is one of lifeâ€™s major passages, one of the most profound rites of passage that a person or a couple can experience. In many cultures, marriage is generally made known to the public through marriage ceremony. This paper unravels the semiotics of a marriage tradition in Batak Toba Society. Batak Toba is one of the ethnic groups of Batak society, which is still doing wedding tradition as one of its cultural activities. The theoretical framework applied is the conception of signs by Charles Sanders Peirce. According to Peirce, â€˜meaningâ€™ is a triadic relation between a sign, an object, and an interpretant. There are three types of signs: icon, index and symbol. This work will reveal the meaning of icons, indexes and symbols in the marriage tradition.

This study observed the form and mechanism of power of the New Order in Wiji Thukulâ€™s poem to discover theoretical and factual novelty. This study applied sociology of literature as an approach to gain a strengthening basis about the relationship between Wiji Thukulâ€™s poem and social context during the New Order. The theory of Power by Michel Foucault was used to overview and highlight the form and mechanism of power of The New Order, so that the model of the analysis was analytical descriptive. The object of this study was the antology of Wiji Thukulâ€™s poem Nyanyian Akar Rumput. Based on the analysis, there found that the New Order was an authoritative, repressive, and oppressive government. His power performed through the relation of power and dominant discourse that were spread and legitimated through power networking established by the New Order. This characteristics of power had made Wiji Thukul consistently sacrificed and struggled to conduct a resistance by media of poem. From this study, there could be concluded that Wiji Thukulâ€™s poem was fully loaded with intense and dominant sociological outlook.

Abstract. Politeness is not only related to the act of politeness of language but also related to politics (politeness). This study aims to describe (1) a form of positive politeness; (2) politeness strategies; and (3) politics pragmatic power of positive politeness comments on Jokowi's Instagram account. The data in this study are comments from followers of the Jokowi Instagram account that have positive politeness values. The data source in this study is commenting on followers of the Jokowi Instagram account. Data collection in this study uses the method of note and note, and documentation. Data analysis in this study used intralingual and extralegal methods. The results of the study show (1) the form of positive politeness that the follower chooses the most in commenting is by paying attention to the Regina of the partner. This shows Jokowi's Instagram followers have an optimistic attitude towards Jokowi's leadership. (2) The politeness strategy that is most used by followers in commenting indirectly. This shows that the level of politeness used by Jokowi's Instagram account followers in narrating is already good. (3) The political power of programmatic positive politeness in followers of Instagram accounts includes begging power, praising power, supporting power, influencing power, motivating power, and suggestive power. This shows that followers of the Instagram account have an optimistic attitude towards Jokowi's leadership.
