Abstract

We revisited Wiji Thukul’s poetry from normative and constructivist theories to find the scope of freedom and restriction of opinion and expression through various forms of literary works. We applied stylistic perspective of Jeffries and McIntyre (2010) by involving three of Wiji Thukul's poems, namely Aku Menuntut Perubahan, Sajak Suara, and Puisi Sikap. In their stylistic concept, Jeffries and McIntyre (2010) also have a tendency towards the fields of Pragmatics and Sociolinguistics which emphasized more on speech. Levinson’s Pragmatic approach (1983) connected pragmatics with human aspects, namely psychology, biology, and sociology that were inherent in sign. Therefore, as a symbol (sign) in a literary work, every word and speech were identical and closely related to these three aspects. We perceived that the choice of words in WIji Thukul's poetry aimed to create a threat to the power by the New Order, carried out a protest against the policies and actions of the New Order, made an allusion about the power of the New Order, and denigrated and isolated the New Order. Thus, Wiji Thukul's poetry was a combination and communication between psychological and biological aspects of the author as well as the sociology of society.

Abstract

AbstractThe Road of Lost Innocence is the only one Somaly Mam's novel that was published in 2008, which set in the Cambodian twentieth century. This novel is focused on the perception of binary opposition between the trafficking and the anti-trafficking actions. The trafficking action belongs to the traffickers who are pro to women trafficking and the other one belong to the victims who are contra with the women trafficking practice. There are three goals of this study. The first is to find out about the women trafficking that are portrayed in The Road of Lost Innocence novel. This step will be focused on the binary opposition between the trafficking action in the life of lower class with the anti-trafficking action that are depicted in the novel. The second is to know about the social condition of Cambodian society in the twentieth century. The third is to know about the world view of the author that is represented in the novel. This article begins with the analysis of the novel and uses genetic structuralism theory. By applying Goldmann theory of genetic structuralism, we can analyze the structure of the text and Cambodian social structure as well as the world view of the collective subject of the author. The result of the study show that the binary opposition between master and victim thoughts in the trafficking practice that is represented in the novel intertwines with social-cultural condition in Cambodia in the twentieth century. The world view of the collective subject that the writer represents in the novel is anti-trafficking practice by resisting the existence of trafficking practice and struggle for humanity for all people.

Abstract

This article aims at examining Pramudya Ananta Toer’s Buru Tetralogy. Many literary scholars have studied this tetralogy from the points of view of nationalism, posctolonialism, and feminism. However, this article presupposes that this tetralogy is conscpicuous especially regarding the political nuance of the ruling regime and some political issues encountered by the protagonist, Minke. Sosiology of literature is the approach underpinning the scrutiny of four novels incorporated in the tetralogy. Swingewood’s sociology of literature helps this current research to find any relation between the political and historical background of the novels and detils on the political issues found in them. Results show that some political agendas in the novel have proven equal to some political agendas under the Soeharto regim. Oligopoly and oligarchy in the novels which are practiced by the regim is an instance to this. This paper elucidated the regim’s political decisions and the political events confronted by Minke. Constraint of this research is on its textual examination of Pram’s tetralogy Buru. In order to investigate these literary texts and the historical political moments under Soeharto’s regime, further research on the historical and political events of the regime need to be elucidated and have to refer to the historical and political documents and medias.

Abstract

This study observed the form and mechanism of power of the New Order in Wiji Thukul’s poem to discover theoretical and factual novelty. This study applied sociology of literature as an approach to gain a strengthening basis about the relationship between Wiji Thukul’s poem and social context during the New Order. The theory of Power by Michel Foucault was used to overview and highlight the form and mechanism of power of The New Order, so that the model of the analysis was analytical descriptive. The object of this study was the antology of Wiji Thukul’s poem Nyanyian Akar Rumput. Based on the analysis, there found that the New Order was an authoritative, repressive, and oppressive government. His power performed through the relation of power and dominant discourse that were spread and legitimated through power networking established by the New Order. This characteristics of power had made Wiji Thukul consistently sacrificed and struggled to conduct a resistance by media of poem. From this study, there could be concluded that Wiji Thukul’s poem was fully loaded with intense and dominant sociological outlook.

Abstract

There is little research on gender-related children's picture books in Indonesia. In this article, we discuss the disclosure of gender representation in a picture book entitled Perpustakaan Intan. The high number appearances of women, the actions pinned on women, and the clothes displayed in both text and images are materials for visualizing women and men. Previous studies have revealed that men dominate the number of appearances in books. However, this book displays women more often than men. On the one hand, this raises the question of whether this means women are in power, and on the other hand, men are portrayed as powerless. Utilizing the multimodality approach, the results show that although women appear more in the narrative, women are still represented as less powerful.

Abstract

This paper examines the representation of optimism during the American progressive era in the novel Pollyanna. The analysis focuses on discovering the discourse of optimism and the critical position of the author. The theory of representation by Stuart Hall and the discursive approach by Michel Foucault were used. The contextual background and the narrations in the novel are collaborated in the analysis process to find the discourse of optimism and the critical position of the author. The result of this research shows that this novel represents optimism through the glad game and the characters' personality alterations who always look at good sides on everything and make comparison of descending life events. The study also shows that as a writer, Porter positions herself as person who supports optimism as the response in the progressive era in America. Keywords: glad game, optimism, pollyanna, positive psychology.

Abstract

Social discrimination is a never-ending issue that happens not only in reality but also in fiction novels. It is described as perpetual inequality of people based on their disability, illness, sexual orientation, religion, or any other. Hence, literature as a cultural product has a potential to deliver social discrimination discourse. This research aims to discuss how the social discrimination depicted in Kiera Cass’ The Selection. The Selection is a story about an event to find a prince’s bride in Illéa. The caste system and absolute monarchy exist in Illéa’s kingdom. Depending on their jobs, people are divided into eight castes. In this research, the representation theory by Stuart Hall is applied. The study’s analysis is qualitative with the novel as primary data and other supporting sources as secondary data. The collected data are used to indicate how social discrimination between castes constructed in the novel, how it is related to the condition in the United States of America in 1900s, and where the author took a side with. The result of the research shows that social discrimination occurs as the absolute position of the caste and it is difficult to change this situation. The novel’s social discrimination is also related to the real condition of the United States of America in the early 1900s, which includes job, partner, and lifestyle aspects. The author appeared to position herself more on the side of the lower caste at first, but no solution is offered as a result of the lower caste’s work.

Abstract

This paper discusses the journey of finding sexual identity in the novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. The analysis focuses on the effort of finding the sexual identity. The struggles before and after coming out are represented in the novel, as well as the critical position of the author. Stuart Hall's representation theory was used as a qualitative approach to analysis. The data of this study were obtained from words, phrases and sentences related to the phenomenon of gay and trans-gender in the selected novels. People are still uncomfortable with the behavior of the LGBT group, so it causes violence against groups associated with them. When the protagonist admits to being gay, he is abused and discriminated against by others, like in the novel. By relating the problem in the story to the author's biography and the struggle to establish his own sexual identity, the topic of sexual identity seems crucial to address as a part of this social phenomenon. This research was conducted as an initial research on the LGBT group, which is expected to be useful for future research.

Abstract

This research aims to find some ideologies in the adaptation of a novel into a film that uses qualitative research methods and comparative methods. These ideologies lead us to find out the motive beyond the adaptation work. So, this research discusses two objects. The first object is how the transformations of The Lightning Thief adaptation (from novel to film) are. The second object is the motive beyond the adaptation of The Lightning Thief from a book into a film. This research uses Linda Hutchon’s theory of adaptation as a basis of theory, Roland Barthes’ Mythologies, and the theory film of mise-en-scene as the method to find out the ideology from both the novel and film. The results show some transformations of the ideologies from the book into a film. The novel brings the emergence of feminism, the motherhood role, collectivism, fantasy as the uniqueness of the story, and cultural universality. While the film changes into the emergence of patriarchal ideology, the fatherhood role, individualism, competitiveness, and freedom of American values. These results show three motives of adaptation: cultural capital, personal motive, and economic lures.
