Abstract

This research is about indirect speech acts used in the movie “In Time”. The purpose of the research is to find out the types of used indirect speech acts. This is a qualitative research. The data cover all utterance used in “In Time” movie. It is found out that there are 17 utterances which is identified as indirect speech acts. In conducting this research, the researcher watched the film, downloaded script of the movie, read the movie script, and identified the data. The researcher used Searle’s theory that is indirect speech act used when the speaker wants to communicate more than what is communicate conventionally by the words he utters and classified into directive, representative, expressive, directive and commissive. The result of the study shows that there are 17 utterances that contain indirect speech acts. They are 7 representatives, 2 expressive, 7 directives, 1 commisive and declarative utterance not found in the movie. Based on the result of this research, indirect speech acts categorized into the function such as asserting, convincing, predicting, instinct, surprising, gratitude, requesting, commanding, ordering, suggesting and promising.

Abstract

The aim of conducting this research are to find out whether or not using 3-Dimensional pictures is able to increase the ability of the students of SMP Negeri 3 Pangsid Kabupaten Sidenreng Rappang to write a descriptive composition. And to find out whether or not the use of 3-Dimensional pictures is interesting for the students in writing English. In this research, the researcher employed a cluster random sampling technique meaning two classes from five classes in the population were taken as the sample which represented the experimental and control group. The classes were selected randomly. The number of total samples was 60 students. The researcher used two kinds of instruments in collecting data namely writing test and questionnaire and calculating the mean score, standard deviation, frequency table, and the value of t-test to identify the difference between pretest and posttest by using inferential analysis in SPSS 21.0 program for the windows evaluation version. To calculate questionnaire data into a percentage, the researcher used the percentage technique using this SPSS 21.0 program for the windows evaluation version. The result of the research shown that the use of 3D-Pictures as an authentic material can improve the students’ writing ability. The writing ability of students who used 3D-Pictures as an authentic material and those who had just used conventional way had a significant difference. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Eighth-grade students’ of SMP Negeri 3 Pangsid Kabupaten Sidenreng Rappang have better writing ability by using 3D-Pictures as authentic material. And the use of 3D Pictures in teaching process particularly in writing skill was interesting and effective. It was proved by a mean score of students answer in the questionnaire showed that the students were categorized as interested.

Abstract

The research was conducted to find out whether or not the use of Jigsaw II technique improves the reading comprehension significantly better than the use of the conventional method of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 8 Takalar, it covered students’ literal comprehension, inferential comprehension and critical comprehension of expository text and whether or not the students are interested in the use of Jigsaw II technique in learning reading of expository text. This research method employed was quasi-experiment. The research data were obtained through the test and questionnaire which were analyzed by SPSS 17.0 program. Data of test were analyzed using T-test to know students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal, inferential, and critical of expository text. Data of the questionnaire were analyzed by using descriptive statistics to see the students’ interest in joining the reading class of expository text through Jigsaw II technique. The research findings indicated that (1) Jigsaw II technique gave a higher contribution to the students’ reading comprehension of expository text. The mean score of pretest of the experimental and control group was significantly different after treatment by using Jigsaw II technique. The mean score of posttest of the experimental group was higher than the control group (84.16 > 62.91). Thus, the use of Jigsaw II technique was effective. Besides, all the three levels of comprehension improved after doing treatment; the literal comprehension got the highest improvement was 92.19>76.69. It was followed by inferential comprehension which got 83.75>66.25, and critical comprehension which got76.56 > 42.81.

Abstract

Particularly for speaking skill, the students often find some problems. The problem frequently found is that their native language causes they difficult to use the foreign language. Other reason is because lack of motivation to practice the foreign language in daily conversation. English teacher should be able to motivate the learners in learning this foreign language. Motivation is a change of energy in a person's which is characterized by the emergence of affective and reaction to achieve the goals. It should be done by every English teacher in order that the students are interested to learn this language. English teacher must be able to manage the teaching by using certain method in the teaching-learning process, so that the students will like it without boring and despair. This research focused to find out whether community language learning method able to overcome the problem. It is proved by the difference between pre-test and post-test result of the three components speaking ability and final score of the students speaking ability

Abstract

The research aims at finding out the ability to translate English phrases into Indonesian which cover the noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase, and prepositional phrase; and also the difficulties faced by the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Pancarijang. The research will employ the descriptive method. It will take six classes, and each class consisted of thirty-five students which mean that is 210 students as the population in this research. It will use a proportional random sampling technique to minimize the big population. The researcher will take 7 students randomly for each class, totally 42 students. The data will be collected by using a reading test, questionnaire and interview to know the students’ ability which will be analyzed through SPSS 21.0. The research result will be indicated that the translate English phrases into Indonesia can develop ability students’ of SMAN 1 Pancarijang. The research method employed was a descriptive method. The research data were collected using three kinds of the instrument which test to asses students’ ability to translate English phrases into Indonesian, questionnaire, and interview to know the difficulties faced in translating English phrases into Indonesian was analyzed descriptive method. The findings of the research showed that the students’ mean score in translation test is 78.43 and it was categorized as good. The study concluded that (1) the students have a good ability in translating English phrases into Indonesian, and (2) although the students have good ability in translating English phrases into Indonesian, they still face difficulties in translation. Most of the difficulties dealt with the ‘language problem’ which is related to vocabulary and structure. It is more vocabulary and grammar in order to minimize the difficulties faced by students in translation. It is then recommended for further related research to conduct research on other types of translation test.

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills that should be improved by the students in learning English. The implementation of local wisdom based reading in this current research aimed to find out to what extent the effect of local wisdom based reading toward students’ reading comprehension at tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar. In this research, the researcher used experimental method with pre-experimental design. There were two kinds of test, namely pretest and posttest. Besides, the researcher administered the questionnaire to find out the students’ responds toward the effect of local wisdom based reading. The number of sample used in this research was 22 students. The result of this research shows that local wisdom based reading materials positively influenced the students’ reading comprehension. It is proved by the students’ mean score in pretest was 45.00 and posttest was 69.95. in addition, the result of the questionnaire shows that there were about 72.73% students give positive respond toward the material applied

Abstract

The research objectives were to find out whether (or not) the use of Project Based Learning can improve the reading comprehension of the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Tallo Makassar, and to know whether (or not) the use of Project Based Learning Strategy can improve the reading interest of the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Tallo Makassar. This research applied quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Tallo Makassar in academic year 2015/2016. This research used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research consisted of 72 students belonging two classes, 36 students in experimental group and 36 students in control group. The instrument of the research was used to collect the data in this research, those are reading comprehension test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using independent samples test and inferetial statistics on SPSS version 20.0. The result of posttest of experimental group is more significantly improved than the students’ result of posttest of control group by the students’ mean score 83.22. >77.83. The difference of both scores is statistically significant it is based on the t-test value at significant level 0.05 in which the probability value is lower than the significant level (0.00 < 0.05). the students’ precentage responses from questionnaire show 38.9% very high interest and 52.8% high interest, and 8.3% moderate and the mean score is 81.06. It means, the students are interested in learning reading comprehension by using Project Based Learning strategy.

Abstract

Vocabulary has become a crucial aspect of learning foreign language. For young learners, the first words that they acquire could be like profound basis for a better learning of children. Related to the importance of vocabulary for young learners the teachers have to provide a new interesting teaching aid such as YouTube. The aim of this study is to find out the the differences between students who are taught by using YouTube and those who are not and to find out students’ perception of using YouTube in teaching vocabulary. This study employed quantitative and qualitative research design. The result of the study showed that the use of YouTube in this study is effective in teaching vocabulary for young learners and students who are taught by using YouTube are master in vocabulary. Furthermore, from the classroom observation and questionnaire, the use of YouTube can motivate students to learn vocabulary and the students have positive perception of using YouTube in teaching vocabulary for young learners
