This study aims to discover category of speech function used by a beauty influencer “Hanum Mega’s Promotional Caption in Instagram. This study refers to Halliday’s Approach as the framework to explain category of speech function coded in instagram caption. This study uses qualitative method. The result shows that Hanum Mega as a beauty influencer dominantly used statement to promote the product. In small number, Hanum mega also used command and offer in promotional caption. Statement as the dominant type of speech function coded in Hanum Mega’s promotional caption, it also shows that she uses descriptive features to attract her followers buy the products.

THE VALUE OF TEACHERS’ EFFECTIVE PRAISE AND FEEDBACK TO ADULT LEARNERS TO CREATE A POSITIVE CLASSROOM CLIMATE Henny Mardiah

Recent studies have demonstrated that praise for academic performances can affect students’ intrinsic motivation and performances in learning. This study aims to investigate the value of teachers’ effective praise and feedback to adult learners to create a positive classroom climate. The participants of this study were 41 students of fourth semester, TBI-4, UINSU. This study was conducted with a descriptive qualitative research which incorporates both qualitative and quantitative instruments to accomplish the objectives of the study. The questionnaires were distributed to the students. The questionnaires had ten close-ended questions. Students were asked to choose one best answer based on their learning experiences or their learning expectations. The results of the study suggest that effective praise and feedback are needed to boost adult leaners’ motivation in learning. Adult learners define characteristics of an effective praise is brief, objective and explicit. Meanwhile, an effective feedback could be delivered in a clear, brief, practical and relevant way. Adult learners also realize the importance of effective praise and feedback to maintain teacher-student interaction which results to positive classroom climate.

The Picture word inductive is an inquiry-oriented language arts strategy that uses pictures containing familiar objects and actions to elicit words from children's listening and speaking vocabularies. This strategy leads the students to identify each object in a picture that they will describe. The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of Picture Word Inductive Model in improvement vocabulary skills‟ for Indonesian students at SD Swasta Pelangi Medan. The population of this research is the Second year students at SD Swasta Pelangi. The number of sample is 28 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Based on the result of this research, the writer suggest that Picture Word Inductive Model may be used as alternative media in teaching vocabulary, in order that the students can more understand and interested in learning activity especially in learning of English.

THE PYGMALION EFFECT: HOW EXPECTATIONS INFLUENCE TEACHERS’ GRADING DECISION MAKING Nisrina Nisrina

This study investigated teachers’ expectation for students that lead to the choice of assessment types and the considered factors in grading decision making. Two teachers from different public senior high school were selected. The phenomenon where the positive teaching expectations deliberately lead to high student achievement (Pygmalion effect) is found in this study. The results show that positive teachers’ expectation for students will be reflected through their positive body language and give learning instruction more challenging for those who can fulfill their expectation i.e high achievement students. The expectations are dealing with students’ active participation the class and manner or attitude. Henceforth, teachers give more concern in applying informal assessment in grading students’ achievement in which process is more concerned instead of result. In addition, their expectations for students are used in considered factor in grading students’ achievement that is reflected in the report cards. Low achievement students could receive disadvantageous learning condition because of teachers’ expectation influencing their performance in a negative way, as grant their grade in report cards does not measure their real achievement.

CODE SWITCHING IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) CLASSROOM Rizky Yolanda

EFL is a foreign language abbreviation for English. This is mainly used to talk about students (whose first language is not English) learning English while living in their own country. In the EFL classroom , the teacher usually switches the code to make students understand what the teacher is saying. The aim of this article is to present the use and functions of code switching in the classroom of the EFL. The subject of this study was English for a nursing class with 30 students and an English lecturer at Sultan Agung University Semarang. The activity was recorded in this EFL classroom for about 90 minutes and the code switching functions were analyzed on the basis of Hyme's (1962) framework. The study suggests that the use of code switching and mother tongue would facilitate the learning of foreign languages. Mother tongue could therefore be an important and useful element to help learners learn a foreign language during the learning process.

INDONESIAN EFL TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVE ON GOVERNMENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Diah Safithri Armin

Indonesian government provides many programs in developing teacher’s profession, such as certification, standard of education background, and teachers’ group (Teacher Activity Center (PKG), Course Teacher Forum (MGMP), and Teacher Working Group (KKG)). This study attempted to investigate teachers’ perspective on government professional development programs. This research applied basic interpretive qualitative research, and used open-ended questionnaire and semi structured interview as technique of collecting data. The participants of this research were fifty EFL teachers from five cities in Indonesia. The research finding showed that Indonesian EFL teachers have positive perspective on professional development in improving their teaching skill. Most of the EFL teachers also have positive perspective on government professional development programs, even though some of them suggest that the government professional development program is better to provide activities improving their teaching skills than to discuss administration. The implication of this study is the Indonesian EFL teachers have positive perspective on government professional development programs, but they also suggest the government professional development programs should focus on helping the teacher in improving their teaching skills.

ISTIQOMAH IN AL-QUR’AN: THE CONCEPT, TERMINOLOGY, AND IT’S APPLICATION Achmad Ramadhan

This paper is aimed to describe the most spoken concept in alQur’an, namely istiqomah and its application. The description of this important concept covers some aspects: 1) the definition and meaning of istiqomah both etimologically and terminologically, 2) the interpretations of the Muslim scholars dealing with the concept, 3) the answer to the question if it is the strange term to Muslim, 4) the significance of the implementation of the term istiqomah, and 5) the ways to implement the concept of istiqomah. Based on the descriptions above, it can be concluded that the concept of istiqomah covers some aspects as follows: 1) istiqomah deals with tauhid purity and not false worship, 2) istiqomah deals with doing the duties, either compulsory or optional, physically or mentally, 2) istiqomah deals with leaving out all the prohibitions, 3) istiqomah deals with being a pious to worship Allah The Almighty, 4) istiqomah deals with the continuation of worshipping Allah The Almighty, and 5) istiqomah deals with the implementation of the rightness in social life
