Abstract

Drawing on narrative inquiry aiming to understand the experience of student teachers learning context texts through different modes of meaning. This paper reports on the use of narrative frames as a mean of investigating the intersemiotic practice experiences of student teachers majoring in English education program in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. Students in depth interview data revealed that multimodal practice has the potential to promote the role of student teachers as designers and navigators in reading English disciplinary texts. In addition, multimodal reading encourages the student teachers to become autonomous language learners. Moreover, multimodality reading tasks can scaffold students in comprehending academic language and in increasing students’ academic vocabulary development as well. These findings have implications for policy makers and teacher educators.

Abstract

This research is aimed to investigate the speech act between seller and buyers in ‘Sinaga Shop’at Jalan Melanthon Siregar Pematangsiantar. Speech act is related to utterances. Communication can be said successful if the speech act between speaker and listener are good in daily life. The transaction in the market between seller and buyer is also inevitable. Therefore, the problem of this study is: “What kinds of speech act verbs do the sellers and buyers use in ‘SINAGA SHOP’ Jalan Melanthon Siregar Pematangsiantar in their daily conversational transaction? To answer the problem above, the researchers follow some theories that related with the problem, they are speech act theory by Austin (1962) and Searle (1985). Descriptive qualitative approach was conducted. Participants of this study are seller and buyers at “SINAGA SHOP”. They are female and male. Context of the study is the utterances of seller and buyers in “SINAGA SHOP”. After analyzing the data, the researchers found that there were some verbs that the seller and the buyer use in their daily transactional conversation, they are: Representative include suggest, report, state, inform, complain. Directive include ask, request, order. Expressive include apologize, thank, pardon. Commisive include offer and Declaratives include sentencing.illocutionary act, pragmatics, speech act, utterance

Abstract

This research focuses on symbolism which is appeared in Angels and Demos movie. There are various symbolisms shown through this Angels and Demons movie. Most of the symbolism has different meaning to be analyzed. The discussion covers on symbolism specifically on types and meaning on it. This research uses qualitative-description research which is accomplished by the writer by getting the data needed through this movie, having the library and internet research with the relevant sources, collects the data to be analyzed also describing meaning by explaining the result of the research. The conclusion of the research is finding five types of symbolism whereas only three symbolisms are suitable for this research, discover the meaning of every single symbolism found.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify fragments found on online diaries of 6th batch SEA Teacher blog writing in St. Paul University Surigao, Philippine, and to describe the problems faced by 6th batch SEA Teacher participants in writing online diaries. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative. For collecting data, the researchers used non-interactive techniques by analyzing ten formal online diaries and distributing the questionnaire. The researchers employed three steps for analyzing the data, namely data reduction, data display, and drawing some conclusions. The researchers analyzed ten formal online diaries, the researcher found fragments on seven formal online diaries. The most significant fragment realized was missing verbs (56.52%) followed by missing subject (30.43%), added detail fragment (8.70%), and –ing fragment (4.34%). Whereas, the highest problem faced by 6th batch SEA Teacher participants in writing online diaries was lack of grammar knowledge, time limitation, limited reference, and different language used.

Abstract

The study is entitled the students’ perception on Quizizz as Game Based Learning as a in learning grammar in Written discourse. The aimed of this research was to investigate students’ opinion on Quizizz as Game Based Learning as a in learning grammar in Written discourse and their obstacles in the implementation. The data for this study were gained through qualitative method that used questionnaire and interview, and the respondents were four semester students who used quizziz as their learning activity. And created 10 questions relevant to the topics which are students already learned before by using Quizizz as games based learning for 20 minutes before finishing grammar in written discourse class once the students feel very tired, sleeping and bored for their grammar in written discourse class. The study revealed that the students had positive perception on the use of quizziz, and all students were very active to answer the questions which provided by researches, and more concentrated on the topic. The result of the study expected to give contribution in improving EFL teaching and learning activity, especially in learning grammar in Written discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the student teachers’ experience while conduct teaching practicum. The study identified how three student teachers construct their teacher identity and explore the proper way that they do to manage the classroom in the placement school. I examined the narratives from three student teachers by sharing stories of their teaching practicum in a secondary school in Indonesia for about a month. This study uses in-depth online interviews, reflective journals, and photovoice to collect the data. The results suggest that teaching practicum can be a way to construct student teachers’ professional identities and lead them to deal with the situation in the classroom during the teaching practicum. Moreover, preceding teaching experience and good relationships with members of the school are essential to carry them out from teaching practicum.

Abstract

The digital era is undeniable. Communication all over the world runs with the involvement of digital devices. For widespread information, mobile phones such as smartphones play an essential role in learning media, especially in learning English. In learning English as a foreign language, smartphones provide a variety of features to support the learning process. These potential features benefit the students so they can help themselves in improving their ability, especially in the English language. This study explored the kind of mobile application suggested by the teachers to help their students learn English. By conducting a case study, this study covered a variety of mobile applications and their use in the learning activity. About eight teachers from different senior high schools in Indramayu participated in this study. A questionnaire were distributed to the participants to collect the data; then, it was analyzed qualitatively.

Abstract

This study focuses on the manifestation of speaking anxiety and the coping mechanism that used by the second semester of university students. Young (1991) claimed that anxiety may affect the quality of an individual’s communication or willingness to communicate. Students with anxiety show a passive attitude in their studies such as low motivation in learning and poor in performances and examination. Thus, this study used a descriptive qualitative approach, the data collection was carried out through observation and interview adopted from (Hadziosmanovic, 2012). There were 6 students who are belong to different levels of anxiety participated in this study. The result showed that students experienced hearth racing, dry throat and mouth, muscle twisted, trembling hands, embarrassed, and nervous feeling which belong to physiological manifestation, 3 students experienced lost the words and could not find the right vocabularies in English that leads to switched the language use which belong to linguistic manifestation. In coping mechanism, reminiscence, relearning, and remediation were used by the students. However, only 2 students learn to re-experiencing their previous experiences for the successful performances. Future researches may considered the anxiety manifestation and its coping mechanism in online learning.

Abstract

Culture shock aspect is such a common issue that is experienced among students who studyabroad. The causes of culture shock aspect usually are anxiety and the lack of interculturalcommunication competence. Most of studies in the previous study tend to discuss the importanceof intercultural communication competence and only describe the kinds of culture shock. Thus,to fill this empirical void, this study aims to investigate Thai student teachers’ experiences ofintercultural communication competence and how they handle their culture shock during study inIndonesia. In order to understand more about culture shock aspects, we used culture shock andaxiety theory by Oberg (1960) and Dörnyei (2005). The study is employed qualitative method.Participants in this research were two Thai student teachers who have lived for more or less 4years in one of Islamic universities in Yogyakarta., They are from different batch and major. Thedata were obtained by in-depth interview. We analyzed the data by using thematic analysismethod by Braun & Clarke (2006). The finding showed that all participants experienced theculture shock symptoms stages, such as tension of adaptation, sense of loss and rejection fromenvironment, rejected by new culture, unpredictable anxiety, and feeling of helplessness at thefirst time they studied in Indonesia. There was also an interesting finding that both of them hadthe lack of intercultural communication competence, and also the anxiety leads them to survivein Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract The students in elementary schools level have many shortcomings in memorizing vocabulary so that they tend to have lack of vocabulary. One of the factors that can affect the students with lack of vocabulary is using teaching media. Flashcards as teaching media can be used to enrich the students’ vocabulary. In this research, the purpose is to improve the students’ vocabulary using flashcards to the First Grade of SDN Sambong 3 Batang. Based on the writer’s experiences during teaching, the students were having lack of vocabulary. Therefore, this research is expected to find a solution to the students’ problem in mastering vocabulary. The method used in this research is a Classroom Action Research which consisted of Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. This method was done in two cycles in order to get better result of the research. The subject of the study is the first Grade of SDN Sambong 3 Batang. The total number of research participants was 22 students. The technique used for collecting data was using by observation. The findings of this research were that the students’ progress during teaching and learning activity in classroom that the students did the discussion group and presented the result of the group discussion in front of the class. The students did the assessment in the form of multiple choices after having the discussion. Keywords: Learning Vocabularies , Flashcard Technique
