Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the factors that cause second year students’ anxiety when speaking English. It was done in SMPN 3 Kroya Indramayu academic year 2020/2021.The researchers find some problems in speaking skill of second year students are low and do not have enough self-confidence. The problems are influenced by some factors such as teacher, teaching lesson, and students. It makes the researchers interested in conducting research. This research focuses on student’s speaking anxiety based on the characteristics of anxiety and the factors that caused student anxious. This research was qualitative in nature. Data collecting technique was done by observation, interview, and documentation. The research subject was second year student that the number was 64 students. The subject interview of this research was conducted by purposive sampling technique. The subject of research was taken six students from 64 students of 8th B grade. Then it was analyzed by using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this research shows that students who feel anxiety when speaking English were caused by some factors. Those are classroom activities, ways of teaching, teaching lesson, disbelief in speaking and stressful speaking experiences.

Abstract

Online learning is available in various ways and methods. To find out the difference between online communication and material presented, it must be appropriate so that it can be well received by students. For that, every university must prepare well. Learning online communication that is not ready can automatically disrupt the course of teaching and learning activities. Differences in Synchronous and Asynchronous Online Learning Communication. Synchronous communication is a learning communication carried out in a real time communication system. Lecturers can deliver material in class directly to students. Synchronous online, lecturers can still do virtual learning by online class media. Asynchronous communication is learning communication that is not limited in time. In the meaning lecturer provides material that can be used as a reference for students. The material can be learn by students in the form of PPT files, PDFs, and videos. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected almost all aspects of human life, to break the chain of virus transmission, Indonesian government take of health protocol regulations. The condition of education has huge impact. However, education must continue. Learning process during in emergency is carried out by Synchronous and Asynchronous learning

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in students' Indonesian writing skills in short stories material who received flash cards and students who received conventional learning methods. The population in this study was class VIII SMP Aruslan, Sukamulya District, Tangerang Regency, for the 2021/2022 academic year. The sample in this study were students of class VIII.3 and VIII.4 totaling 60 students with a sampling technique using purposive sampling, two classes were selected, namely the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received a picture card learning media (flash card), while the control group received conventional learning. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The research instrument given was in the form of a test consisting of 10 questions in the form of an essay. Analysis prerequisite test using Chi Square test and Fisher's exact test, it was found that both samples were normally distributed and homogeneous. From the calculation of statistical tests obtained tcount > ttable (2, 48 > 1.99), then Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted at a significant level = 0.05 with degrees of freedom (db) = 64. So it can be concluded that there are differences in students' short story writing abilities. which is taught with the media of picture cards (flash card) and which is taught by conventional learning methods. Thus, it can be concluded that there is an effect of using flash card media on students' short story writing skills.

Abstract

This study examines brand and communication strategies undertaken by Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang in building brand equity. The purpose of research to know and evaluate brand and communication strategy in building brand equity of Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang dissemination of competition of private universities in increasing number of new students. Theoretical basis of research is the theory of brand equity. The paradigm in this research is constructivist paradigm, using qualitative approach and through case study method to look for its specificity. Primary data were obtained from key informants through interviews and observation. While secondary data obtained through document studies. Data were analyzed qualitatively using brand equity elements as well as withdrawal of conclusions or verifications. To check the validity of data is done by tringulasi sources and methods and discuss with colleagues. The results showed that: First, the factor of formation of brand equity of Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang include: (1). 1) Institutional and Study Accreditation, 2) Achievements, 3) Campaign Superior Activities, 4) Premium Cost, 5) Shif Class, and 6) Relationship with Alumni.

Abstract

In this research the author used Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory which discusses a person's behavioral personality and Suseno's moral theory. The main discussion in this research is to focus on the personality of the Id, Ego and Superego as well as the moral values contained in the characterization of Olivia Pullman. The purpose of this research is to describe the character of Olivia Pullman in terms of literary psychology and to describe the moral values contained in the characterization of Olivia Pullman. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method in the form of excerpts of dialogues between characters in the movie. The results of the analysis show that the superego personality is more dominant because Olivia Pullman's character is not only concerned with her own desires but also cares about the feelings of others. Therefore, the moral value that is more dominant in the characterization of Olivia Pullman is the moral value of independence which is shown through Olivia Pullman's daily life who is always alone because her best friend left her and lack of attention from her parents.

Abstract

This research aims to prove a correlation between Vocabulary Mastery and Emotional Intelligence towards Reading Comprehension (Survey of State Junior High School Students in Bekasi Regency). This research employs a survey of regression and correlation analysis using the SPSS program. There are three variables in this research: two independent variables (vocabulary mastery and emotional intelligence), and one dependent variable (reading comprehension). The data is gathered through vocabulary and reading comprehension tests, as well as a questionnaire on emotional intelligence. Following an analysis of the research variables, the following conclusion can be drawn: (1) There is a significant correlation of vocabulary mastery and emotional intelligence together on students' ability to understand English reading as evidenced by the acquisition of Sig scores. 0.000 < 0.05 and Fh= 20.095 or 29.3%, (2) there is a significant correlation of vocabulary mastery on students' ability to understand English reading as evidenced by the acquisition of Sig scores. 0.002 < 0.05 and t-test= 3.164 or 14.45%, (3) there is a significant correlation of emotional intelligence on the ability to understand students' English reading as evidenced by the acquisition of Sig scores. 0.002 < 0.05 and t-test= 3.233 or 14.87%.

Abstract

Pesantren is a traditional Islamic educational institution that studies religious knowledge (tafaqquh fi al-dîn) with an emphasis on moral formation of students so that they can practice it with the guidance of kiai and make the kitab kuning book as the primary source and the mosque as the center of activity. The growth of Pesantren as a traditional Islamic boarding school in the urban area has demonstrated that there have been changes in the pesantren itself. However, its existence has not been influenced by sociopolitical, economical, or cultural changes, it does not mean Pesantren does not face problems and challenges externally or internally. This article will talk about some issues such as the development of Pesantren: historical point of view, Pondok Pesantren today and of course the challenges which are occurring around.

Abstract

This Thesis is an attempt to find the racism that occurred by the man character in 42 movie. There are 3 problems of the study: (1) What are the factors causing the racism in 42 movie? (2) How to determine the racism in 42 movie by Brian Helgeland? (3) What are the effects of racism in 42 movie by Brian Helgeland?. A qualitative methods used to explain about Racism in 42 movie directed by Brian Helgeland. The data were collected from websites, references books, some articles, and the original movie. The writer watched the movie many times to get the point of story in this movie. Put the dialogues or the conversation that related with the main title in this paper to analyze the data. The results of this research indicates: first, the factor of racism are from culture and America history, second, determining racism by selecting the racism action that occurred between white and black ,the third effect of racism upon the offender and upon the victim, and the last moral message from racism action in 42 movie

Abstract

The purposes of this study are: (1) To find out the figurative language used in Westlife’s selected songs (2) To know the general meaning of lyrics on the Westlife’s selected songs. In analyzing of figurative language used in Westlife’s selected songs lyrics, the writer using qualitative research methodology, the data is taken from several books and internet as well as. Based on research finding, the general meaning contained in Westlife''s selected songs lyric indirectly deliver to the listeners through the lyrics they wrote.The lyrics try to tell about human social life which contains happiness, sadness, loneliness and others. The writer could identified that most of figurative language which used in Westlife’s selected songs lyric is “Hyperbole”. The writer got the data from the table. Hyperbole has a great exaggeration used to emphasize a point.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher analysis a movie entitled Speak. This movie tells about a young girl who suffered from traumatic experiences during her adolescence because of being rape victim. As a result, she can’t express herself and can’t communication with others comfortably. The aims of this research are to analyze and to explain the trauma that face by the main character, and her struggle to recover with it. The researcher uses the theory of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, self-expression, and art therapy to analyze this research. This analysis shows that the main character of this movie is in a bad condition that is reflected to her daily activities. She suffers from guilt, shame, depression, losing concentrate and self-confidence. But finally, she can find the way to heal from her trauma through art class and speak the truth to the people.
