Abstract

Changes in the demographic structure contribute to the aging of the population. The constraints imposed by the limited formal support from the government lead to a dependency of the elderly population on intergenerational support and income derived from the labor market. This research analyze the role between financial transfers provided by adult children to elderly parents who have entered retirement to the workforce participation of the elderly in Indonesia. Utilizing secondary data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey 5 (IFLS 5), the research focuses on individuals aged 50 years or older who have entered retirement. Findings through logit regression suggest that financial transfers may diminish elderly workforce participation. Additional variables that also influencing elderly workforce participation include pension funds, age, gender, and marital status. Conversely, variables such as marital status and living with children variables do not exhibit a significant impact on elderly workforce participation.

Abstract

The supply-leading hypothesis states that financial deepening has a positive effect on economic growth. This paper examines the effect of financial deepening on economic growth in Indonesia for the period 1980–2019. This study uses the Error Correction Model (ECM) approach to analyze financial deepening and economic growth in both the short and long run. The results show that the broad money-to-GDP ratio (M2/GDP), the financial institutions depth index, and the financial market depth index have a positive and significant effect on economic growth in the long run, while only the broad money-to-GDP ratio (M2/GDP) has a positive and significant effect on economic growth in the short run. This implies that financial deepening can stimulate economic growth in Indonesia. Therefore, this study supports the supply-leading hypothesis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the magnitude of the wage gap between disabled and non-disabled workers in Jabodetabek in 2022 using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition methods. The data used in this study are derived from the National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS). The results of the study show that, in general, workers with disability status are negatively and significantly associated with wages, indicating that the wages received by disabled workers are 6.32% lower than those of non-disabled workers. The OLS regression results are further complemented by the Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition method to analyze the magnitude of the average wage gap between disabled and non-disabled workers. The results reveal a wage gap of 34.2%, as indicated by the difference coefficient (D). Of this gap, 27.9% can be explained by differences in the socioeconomic characteristics of workers, while the remaining 6.32% is attributable to unexplained or unobserved factors.

Abstract

Indonesia is still grappling with poverty issues, both at the national and regional levels. The trend shows a downward movement, although the pace of decline tends to be slow and has not been able to meet the poverty target set forth in the RPJMN 2020-2024. Thus, there is a need for innovation in poverty alleviation policies. One such approach is maximizing the role of women. When women participate in productive economic activities, the welfare of their families increases, which can reduce the poverty rate in aggregate. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of variables representing the role of women on poverty levels in Indonesia from 2017 to 2021. The method used is panel data regression with the FEM selected model and the FGLS-SUR estimation method. The results show that women’s pure participation rate, women's life expectancy, the percentage of households with female heads, women's adjusted per capita expenditure, women's average wages, and women's labor force participation rate have a negative and significant effect on poverty levels, while women's open unemployment rate has a positive and significant effect on poverty levels. Meanwhile, women's literacy rate has a negative but insignificant effect on poverty levels.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determinants affecting labour absorption in the industrial sector of West Java province. Using random effect panel data regression, it examines secondary data from 2017 to 2021. The findings indicate that city/regency minimum wages, economic growth, private sector investment, and the number of operating industries positively and significantly influence labour absorption in the industrial sector. Conversely, road infrastructure, foreign direct investment, and the education index do not show a statistically significant effect. To enhance economic growth and labour absorption, the government should accelerate investment, improve the ease of doing business, promote labour-intensive industries, and align labour market needs with industry demands through education and training programs.

Abstract

The middle-income trap (MIT) is an economic situation where a middle-income country experiences stagnation, making it difficult to advance to a higher income level. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a region where eight out of ten countries are classified as middle-income. Although ASEAN's economic growth rate has been relatively stable, averaging 5–6 percent, the growth of its middle-income economies has shown a tendency to slow. When economic growth is slow and productivity is low relative to available factors of production, a country struggles to boost its economy. This research aims to identify the factors influencing the MIT phenomenon in ASEAN's middle-income countries using a panel data regression model. The results indicate that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), the Human Development Index (HDI), the output share of the service industry, and the Open Unemployment Rate (TPT) significantly affect the MIT index. In contrast, the output share of the manufacturing industry was found to have no significant effect. It is hoped that this research will contribute to helping middle-income economies in the ASEAN region avoid the middle-income trap.
