Abstract

Literary criricism has recently undergone diverse growth. One school of literary criticism appealing most in America nowadays is ecocriticism. Theoretically, ecocriticism grew out of awareness of the interdependence of literature on environment. Environmental matters have profoundly been discussed over disciplines; ecology, technology, economics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, Iaw and others. Environmental study centers, environmentol NGOs and environmental movements hove frequently emerged. These symptoms have been a challenge for literary scholarships to participate. Yet the foremost question is what role the literary scholarships can take to answer the question on the environmental matters. And the role is what ecocriticism about to point.

Abstract

Kebijaksanaan untuk memakai bahasa Inggris saja di AmerikaSerikat menuai banyak kontroversi. Dengan tujuan untukmenyatukan bangsa, kebijaksanaan ini diterapkan di sekolah, dengan berbagai program yang mengharuskan para imigran untuk bisa menguasai bahasa Inggris dengan cepat sehingga mereka bisa mempelajari ilmu-ilmu lainnya sebagaimana yang dipelajari oleh sfsruo yang berbahasa dbu bahasa Inggris. Namun pada kenyataannya, kebijaksanaan ini justru memberikan masalah bagi siswa imigran karena mereka mendapat sikap negatif dan pada akhirnya memicu konflik identitas bagi mereka dan menghilangkan warisan bahasa mereka. Kebijaksanqan ini juga menyebabkan penutur bahasa Inggris tidak sensitif bahkan meremehkan budayalain sehingga mereka kehilangan kesempatan untuk mempelajarinya. Ada tiga hal yang menyebabkan kebijaksanaan tersebut tetap diterapkan meskipun telah menimbulkan masaloh; salah pengertian terhadap bilingual education, peranan mass media yang cenderungmembela kebijaksanaan ini, dan adanya keinginan dari penguasa untuk mempertahankan status kekuasaannya denganmempertahankan status bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This ND text tells complexity of matters on the relation betweenthe ego and the other. The relation is suspected for annexation.Elucidation of the relation shows that the ego annexes the other many times over. Identity games, role obscurity, power loss and good deeds of the ego lead the main body and mind, is used as a device and politics by the ego to destroy, disdain and civilize the other. The ND text also deconstructs or demolishes its'narrative building' and textual strategy. It is evident when Mark Buyung as a tangent area breaks down ond destroys various discourse and the ego construction to annex the other (indigenous). Nyai Dasimo is a representation and symbol of a colony, women and colonial power so os to become a prey for the ego and the other, her legal owner.

Abstract

The concept of defamiliarisation represents the concept which is brought about by formalism. The concept is emphasized by the application of close reading, taking the texts the only consideration in analyzing it. The focus is to undo the easiness of understanding a text with a purpose to make the text more interesting. The text studied here is "JumatĀ  long Sebening Gelas Anggur by Hasta Indriyani. The analysis is conducted parallel with the number of event in the story. The analysis found that the text contains many symbols, namely metonymy, paradox, personification, simile, hyperbole, and methaphore. Those symbols are used to defamiliarized the text. Abstract

This paper focuses on analyzing the novel entitled Anna and the King using the feminist cultural deconstructive approach. The purposes to dig out the hidden meaning contained in the novel through deconstructive approach from a feminist perspective about two different cultures (British and Siam) that interact for a long time. The result shours that each side -Anna the British woman and King Maha Mongkut of Siam- deconstructs and is deconstructed in the process of interaction. Both, in the long run, have a blend of cultures for their own betterment and for the betterment of the people around them.
