Abstract

The birth of modern Indonesian novel can be represented by Belongs, followed by the works ofPRIMEDIA Ananta Toer and Mochtar Lubis. New style of writing has been practiced by Iwan Simatupang,Budi Darma, Danarto, and Putu Wijaya. Other authors writing in the mainstreamstyle are Umar Khayam, YB Mangunwijaya, Nh Dini, Subagio Sastrowardoyo, and many others.The 21st century is marked by the works of young writers, writing more intensely based on seriousresearch, using various materials and settings. There have been trans-gender, trans-locale, andvarious points of view. The young potential writers are Nukila Amal, Ayu Utami, Oka Rusmini, DewiLestari, Cok Sawitri, Andrea Hirata, E.S. Ito, Eka Kurniawan, Triyanto Triwikromo and many others.Their works, supported by research and serious treatment to their materials are surprisingly promising.Key words: modern Indonesian novel, mainstream style, young writers

Abstract

The objective of this action-based research is to improve the students’ ability in writing narrativeand descriptive paragraphs by implementing self-evaluation in Traditional Paper-based Instructioncombined with the Electronic Portfolio. The research was conducted based on the prior observation,interview and pre-test conducted in the second semester (2D) of English Education Department,Language and Art Faculty of Undiksha in the academic year of 2006/2007. This study involved29 subjects who has problem in writing the paragraphs. At first, the students were really dependingon the lecturer, had less self-confidence and view the work subjectively. However, as they weregiven the treatment, their self-confidence was getting improved (independence). Moreover, theylearned how to take a risk, open, honest and judge the work objectively. More or less, it influencestheir achievement in writing the paragraphs. It can be seen from the improvement of the averagescore which is 25,67 (fair) in the pre-test, 32.17 (good) during the post-test 1 and 36.69 (very good)in post-test 2. The students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph was better than narrative onebecause they learnt from their experience in narrative. Abstract

The aims of this research is to describe thesis, antithesis, and the existence synthesis Kembar Buncingin Incest novel by I Wayan artika. The design of this research is qualitative descriptive by usingstructural approach. This research use Hegel Dialectical Theory. The result of this research show thatthesis, antithesis, and synthesis caused by the differences of customs development in Jelungkap Village.The other researchers should observe this novel from the other aspects, such as feminist actorsby using feminism theory.Key words: thesis, antithesis, synthesis, kembar buncing, incest.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to know (1) The position of fine art subject in the eyes of the elementaryschool students’ teachers and parents; (2) The attention of the teachers and parents to the fine artstudy of the elementary school students; (3) The point of view of the elementary school students’teachers and parents about the relationship between fine art subject and the development of students’aptitude and creativity; (4) The point of view of the elementary school students’ teachers andparents about the relationship between fine art subject and the development of students’ psychology.The point to be discussed in this study was the perception of elementary school students’ teachersand parents toward the fine art study of the students. This study used the descriptive approach, theinstruments of which were questionnaire, observation, interview, and documentation. It also appliedthe Semantic Differentials analysis technique in scaling the questionnaire.The result to be found were as follows: (1) The position of the fine art subject in the eyes of elementaryschool students’ teachers and parents is still at the secondary one compared to the othersubjects, especially those which are tested in the National Final Examination. Its general reason isthat those subjects are very important in determining students’ graduation later; (2) The attentionof the teachers and parents to students’ fine art study are very low; (3) The knowledge of the elementaryschool students’ teachers and parents about the relationship between fine art subject andthe development of students’ aptitude and creativity is very minimum; (4) The point of view of theelementary school students’ teachers and parents about the relationship between fine art subjectand the development of students’ psychology is still so far from what is expected.

Abstract

Studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis Maxim Percakapan yang terdapat di dalam drama yangberjudul Salome karya Oscar Wilde. Masalah pertama yang diangkat adalah jenis maximsyang terdapat di dalam drama. Analisis dilakukan berdasarkan Maxim Percakapan yang dicetuskanoleh Grice. Masalah kedua adalah faktor sosial yang mempengaruhi pemilihan maxim.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data diambil dari drama berjudul Salome. Data yangdiperoleh berbentuk percakapan. Percakapan tersebut diidentifikasi dan dianalisis untuk mengetahuijenis maxim yang digunakan dan faktor sosial yang mempengaruhi dalam pemilihan maxim.Dari analisis ditemukan bahwa di dalam percakapan yang ada di dalam drama terdapat empat jenismaxim, yaitu; maxim kualitas, maxim kuantitas, maxim sikap dan maxim relasi/hubungan. Dalamanalisis ditemukan juga beberapa kasus dimana maxim tersebut dilanggar (flout and opt out).Faktor sosial yang mempengaruhi pemilihan maxim adalah setting dan tujuan dari percakapan.Kata kunci: Maxim Percakapan, Faktor Sosial

Abstract

Gairaigo is loanwords in Japanese. Gairaigo refers to words that come from foreignlanguages, except China. This gairaigo is written in Japanese phonetic script which iscalled Katakana. Since 16c Japan has interaction with foreign countries, mainly withPortuguese. Through this interaction Japanese borrowed words from foreign languages.After the reopening of Japan in 19c, the absorption of foreign words especiallyfrom European and English predominate. Loanwords are used for concepts which donot exist in Japanese, euphemism and also for other reasons such as status marking orfashionability. When a foreign word containing a consonant cluster is borrowed intoJapanese, it is modified substantially because in Japanese every consonant must befollowed by a vowel. In Japanese language, loanwords are unique and various. Abbreviationsuch as ‘terebi (from terebishion, television)’, portmanteous such as ‘dijikame(dijitaru kamera, digital camera)’, loanblends, Japanese words that combine withother foreign words such as ‘haburashi’ is a blend of Japanese ‘ha (teeth)’ and English‘burashi (brush)’, chanpon’go, combination of two different foreign languages such as‘puchi hoteru’ small hotel derives from ‘petit (french)’ and ‘hoteru (hotel)’, waseieigo,‘made in Japan’ English such as ‘sarariiman’ (salary man) refers to salaried worker. Dueto Japanese pronunciation rules and its mora-based phonology, the pronunciationhas changed to the original language, the variuos forms and the use of gairaigo whichdo not reflect its original meaning make the foreigners who learn Japanese as foreignlanguage find is hard to recognize gairaigo.Key words : gairaigo, foreign language, loanword

Abstract

In reformation era, people wish to have changes in various dimensions of life. They attempt to developthe quality of human resources in order to have high competitive power through the modificationof educational curriculum, which is in accordance with the change of time and the demandof community development.The operation of the educational system, therefore, has moved from centralized system to decentralizedone. This movement can be considered as the consequence of the application of the educationalrule No. 20, the year 2003. In this case, competency based curriculum implies that theteaching of language and Indonesian literature refers to the achievement of standard competencybased on the nature of the teaching and learning of indonesian, that is, communicative competenceand literature appreciation. These two competencies should be presented through the teaching andlearning of language (communicative) skills, and should be done integratedly, both in an attempt toachieve linguistic competency and to achieve competency in literary appreciation.Key words: teaching and learning, Indonesian language, competency based curriculum

Abstract

Almost every language has its own varieties. In any verbal interaction, the use of certain varietiesis determined by such social variables as social status, age, sex, and education. Besides these socialvariables, there are also affecting factors such as psychological factor of the participant, geographicalfactor, and socio-cultural factor of a speech community. While communicating, a speaker uses acertain variety of a language in order to show his relative position or his relationship with his interlocutor.No single strategy is associated with the use of a certain variety of a language—whichevervariety is used merely exhibits a speaker’s verbal repertoire which accordingly could be activated indifferent speech events, with different objectives, as well as with different illocutionary force.
