Abstract

This review aims to determine the diversity of protists in brackish waters, the methodologies of several researchers, and compare the results obtained from various researchers. Some examples of locations and ecosystem types where protists were discovered include mangrove forests, coastal areas, swamps, aquaculture ponds, and river estuaries. Most journals conducted field research for identification and diversity analysis. However, some used DNA metabarcoding techniques for taxonomic and functional analysis, as well as comprehensive literature reviews. The results showed that the majority of protists discovered were animal-like protists (protozoa) and plant-like protists (algae), as well as plankton communities such as phytoplankton and zooplankton. The research results can be used a learning resource, demonstrating and educational aspect.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to illustrate how adding lemon juice affects the fermentation process of cucumber pickles made with probiotics. A mixture of lemon juice, water, and salt was used to carry out the fermentation process. At room temperature, fermentation was carried out for seven days. Changes in pH, solution color, aroma, and the physical state of the cucumbers during fermentation were among the criteria that were noted. According to the findings, the pH progressively dropped from 5.6 on the first day to 4.2 on the seventh, suggesting that lactic acid bacteria activity was creating an acidic environment. The proper fermentation process is indicated by the solution's hue changing to a lighter shade and the emergence of a distinctive sour fermentation fragrance.

Abstract

Water transport in the plant body depends on the efficiency of xylem and phloem networks. This study aims to observe the role of transport tissues, especially xylem, in the process of water transportation in Allamanda cathartica plants. The research method was conducted with three different treatments on the plant stem: xylem and phloem open (control), xylem closed phloem open, and phloem closed xylem open. Each treatment was observed for 10 days to record the decrease in water level. Results showed that the treatment with open xylem absorbed the most water compared to the other treatments, while phloem closure had no significant impact on water absorption. This finding confirms that xylem is the main pathway in the transportation of water in plants, while phloem is more involved in the distribution of photosynthetic products.Keywords: Allamanda cathartica; phloem; transport tissue; xylem.

Abstract

Aeromonas hydrophila is a rod-shaped bacteria (bacillus), root, motile, with a diameter of 0.3-1 µm and a length of 1-3.5 µm, without a spore phase, generally does not have a capsule and grows optimally at a temperature of 28°C but can grow at extreme temperatures (4°C-37°C). Aeromonas hydrophila causes a disease in fish known as Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS), Aeromonas hydrophila infection can cause liver tissue damage such as fatty degeneration, hemorrhage, necrosis, dilation of the central vein, dilation of hepatocytes, dilation of sinusoids, and changes in the size of the cell nucleus. Ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa) are known to be rich in active compounds of tannins and flavonoids which have antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the potential content and efficacy of ketapang leaf extract (Terminalia catappa) in improving the morphology and histology of the liver of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) caused by Aeromonas hydrophila bacterial infection. This study used RAL using 30 tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) which were divided into 6 treatment groups, Normal Control (KN): feed without Aeromonas hydrophila bacterial infection. Negative Control (K-): Aeromonas hydrophila bacterial infection. Positive Control (K+): (fish infected with bacteria + Red Bluedox). Treatment 1: (fish infected with bacteria + 30 ppm ketapang leaf extract). Treatment 2: (fish infected with bacteria + 50 ppm ketapang leaf extract). Treatment 3: (fish infected with bacteria + 70 ppm ketapang leaf extract). The stages in this study included phytochemical screening tests, antioxidant activity tests and morphological and histological examinations of the liver of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Data analysis used one-way ANOVA test and continued with Duncan's advanced test. The results of the study showed that soaking in ketapang leaf extract (Terminalia catappa) had no significant effect on the liver morphology of tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) infected with Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria, while soaking in ketapang leaf extract at a dose of 70 ppm could repair histological damage to the liver of tilapia fish infected with Aeromonas hydrophila, namely with a hemorrhagic damage score (7.75), a fatty degeneration damage score (9.50), and a necrosis damage score (11.00). Meanwhile, histomorphometric observations with a dose of 70 ppm obtained good results for improving the diameter and area of each cell observed, namely the diameter of the central vein (19.54µm), the area of the central vein (306.94µm2), the diameter of hepatocytes (9.03µm), the area of hepatocytes (64.57µm2), the diameter of the hepatocyte nucleus (3.06µm), the area of the hepatocyte nucleus (64.57µm2), the diameter of the sinusoid (7.54µm), and the area of the sinusoid (45.35µm2).

Abstract

Mastiagas papua and Aurelia aurita are two scyphozoan jellyfish species that differ in body structure, development, and environmental adaptation. This study aims to compare the characteristics of both species based on a literature review. The review was conducted through the collection of relevant scientific articles and analyzed descriptively-comparatively. The results showed that Mastiagas papua has a thicker and denser body, a golden coloration, shorter tentacles that are less active in capturing prey than those of Aurelia aurita, and a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae that makes it highly dependent on light and stable environmental conditions. In contrast, Aurelia aurita has a thinner and more transparent body, longer tentacles, and a more complex and flexible life cycle, allowing it to adapt to a wider range of aquatic environments. These differences indicate that the body structure and development of the two species are closely related to their respective habitat adaptation strategies.

Abstract

Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) is a herbal plant known for its health benefits due to the presence of various bioactive compounds. This study aimed to identify the phytochemical compounds contained in butterfly pea flowers through an extraction method using ethanol as the solvent. The flower samples were dried and homogenized using a homogenizer until a fine powder was obtained. The powder was then macerated with 96% ethanol for 2 × 24 hours to obtain a concentrated extract. The resulting extract was analyzed through qualitative phytochemical screening to identify the presence of qualitative phytochemical screening to identify the presence of secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, steroids, and terpenoids. The results showed that butterfly pea flower extract positively contained flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, steroids, and terpenoids. The presence of potential as a natural material with biological activity, particularly as a source of antioxidants. This study is expected to provide supporting data for the development and utilization of butterfly pea flower in the health sector and natural-based products.

Abstract

Kirinyuh plant (Chromolaena odorata) is one of the most aggressive invasive plant species, with a strong ability to colonize diverse habitats under varying environmental conditions. Light availability is a key environmental factor influencing the establishment and spread of invasive species, as it affects leaf physiological and anatomical traits related to photosynthesis and resource use. This study aimed to evaluate the ecophysiological responses of C. odorata under different shading conditions based on chlorophyll content and stomatal characteristics. Leaf samples were collected from plants growing in open and shaded habitats. The parameters observed included chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll content, and stomatal density. Chlorophyll was analyzed using a 95% ethanol extraction method followed by UV–Vis spectrophotometry. Stomatal density was determined through leaf sectioning and safranin staining. The results showed that shaded plants had higher chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll contents compared to those in open habitats, while stomatal density was lower under shaded conditions. These findings indicate that C. odorata can adjust its physiological and anatomical traits in response to light variation, supporting its ecological adaptability.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the diversity and dominant genera of pathogenic fungi contaminating peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seeds sold in traditional markets in Kedaton District, Bandar Lampung. Peanut samples were collected from seven traditional markets using purposive sampling and analyzed through macroscopic and microscopic observations. Fungal isolation was performed using Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), followed by identification using slide culture techniques and standard fungal identification keys. The findings revealed three fungal genera, namely Aspergillus sp., Rhizopus sp., and Penicillium sp. Aspergillus sp. was found to be the most dominant, appearing in 16 out of 21 samples. The dominance of Aspergillus sp. is associated with its strong ability to grow in warm, humid, and open storage environments typical of traditional markets. The presence of these fungi is of concern, as some species are known to produce harmful mycotoxins that may threaten food safety. The study concludes that pathogenic fungal contamination in peanuts is common in traditional markets, highlighting the need for improved postharvest handling and storage practices.

Abstract

Cases of kidney failure in children have become a public topic in Indonesia in recent years. Acute kidney failure in children is suspected to be related to syrup medication as a causative factor. The syrup suspected of causing kidney failure in children is suspected to be contaminated with ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is a compound that can generate free radicals, thus damaging the kidneys. This study aims to examine the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf extract (Moringa oleifera Lam.) on the morphology, histology, and physiology of the kidneys of white rats induced by ethylene glycol. This study used RAL with 20 rats divided into 5 groups, namely the normal control group (feed and drink), the sick control group (0.75% ethylene glycol ad libitum), the Mo 150 treatment group (0.75% ethylene glycol ad libitum and 150 mg/kg BW moringa leaf extract), the Mo 300 treatment group (0.75% ethylene glycol ad libitum and 300 mg/kg BW moringa leaf extract), the Mo 450 treatment group (0.75% ethylene glycol ad libitum and 450 mg/kg BW moringa leaf extract). The stages in this study include phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity testing, total flavonoids, morphological observations, relative organ weight index, scoring of kidney histology damage, examination of kidney urea creatinine levels of white rats. Data analysis used One Way ANOVA and Duncan test. The research results obtained from Moringa leaves did not affect kidney morphology, but had an effect on reducing the relative weight of the organ, scoring of kidney histology damage, creatinine levels, and urea, namely at a dose of 450 mg/kg BW which was effective in reducing the impact of damage due to ethylene glycol administration

Abstract

Most Indonesians rely on soybean as their primary source of vegetable protein. Soybean is an agricultural commodity that serves as a basic ingredient in foods such as tofu, tempeh, soy sauce, tauco, oncom, etc. Soybean, as a vegetable protein, is cheaper and more accessible to Indonesians than animal protein. Currently, soybean yield is unable to meet market demand. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase soybean yield by applying Bradyrhizobium sp. and lime to acidic mineral soils to optimize soybean yield on the land. The research used a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with two factors on a 2 × 2 m plot in Cengkeh Turi Village, Binjai. The first factor was the inoculation of Bradyrhizobium sp. inoculants, which included BGR 3, LP 3, and no inoculant. The second factor was liming, which included not supplying and supplying lime at a level of 1.06 kg/plot (pH 4.5 to 5.5). The results showed that the BGR 3 inoculant was able to increase the number of filled pods of soybean plants. The application of lime was able to increase the number of productive branches, the number of filled pods, the dry weight of seeds per plant and the dry weight of 100 soybean seeds. The application of lime was able to increase the dry weight of seeds per plant by 22.17% and increase the dry weight of 100 seeds by 6.72%.
