Abstract

This study examines the social and economic changes experienced by the communities surrounding Lake Perintis, located in Huluduotamo Village, Suwawa District, Bone Bolango Regency, as an impact of the rapid development of the tourism area. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using data collection methods such as field observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to obtain a comprehensive understanding of community conditions before and after the tourism development. The findings indicate that the development of Lake Perintis has brought positive impacts to the local community, including increased income, the creation of new job opportunities, and a shift in livelihoods from the agricultural sector to the service and tourism sectors. Furthermore, the development has stimulated the growth of small and medium enterprises based on the creative economy, strengthened social interaction among residents, and expanded access to new economic opportunities. However, the study also reveals several negative impacts, such as increased competition between local and migrant traders, concerns over environmental degradation caused by uncontrolled tourism activities, and inequality in business space management and profit distribution. Therefore, a sustainable and participatory tourism management strategy is required to ensure that the development of Lake Perintis not only enhances the community's economic well-being but also maintains social balance, cultural values, and environmental sustainability in the area.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the survival strategies of traditional herbal medicine vendors in Kahayan Market, Palangkaraya City, in maintaining their businesses, using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with five traditional herbal medicine vendors using purposive sampling techniques, observation, and literature study. This study uses James C. Scott's theory of survival strategies (survival mechanisms). The findings show that the survival strategies applied by traditional herbal medicine vendors include (1) tightening their belts (by saving on expenses, buying only basic necessities, managing their finances wisely, and saving money), (2) alternative means of subsistence (taking on side jobs, helping to clean other people's houses, such as sweeping or tidying up, participating in social gatherings as an emergency fund, and implementing sales strategies) (3) social networks (utilizing relationships with family, relatives, to obtain capital assistance and financial support)). Trades also face several challenges such as (1) high competition in the market, (2) customer instability, and (3) difficulty in obtaining raw materials.

Abstract

Local religious traditions in Indonesia function not only as ritual practices but also as spaces for the production of social and religious meaning within community life. One such tradition is kembang endog-endogan, which is performed during the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW) in Kluncing Village, Licin District, Banyuwangi. This study aims to analyze the cultural meanings and religious values embedded in the kembang endog-endogan tradition and to examine its role in strengthening the social-religious identity of the local community. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using participant observation and in-depth interviews. Observations were conducted during the Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW celebration around September 2025, while interviews involved eight informants consisting of religious leaders, community leaders, kembang endog artisans, and residents directly involved in the implementation of the tradition. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the kembang endog-endogan tradition contains religious symbolism representing the values of sharia, iman (faith), and ihsan through the interpretation of the egg's three layers. In addition, this tradition functions as a mechanism for strengthening social cohesion, transmitting religious values across generations, and reproducing the collective identity of the Banyuwangi community. Sociologically, these findings demonstrate that local cultural practices are capable of integrating Islamic teachings with local wisdom in a contextual manner and remaining relevant amid ongoing social change.

Abstract

Child marriage remains a pressing issue in Indonesia despite the existence of regulations that set a minimum legal age for marriage. The marriage of Gus Zizan to a 16-year-old santriwati in 2024 illustrates how this practice gains both social and religious legitimacy, while simultaneously being glorified through social media. This study aims to analyze how Generation Z constructs social perceptions of child marriage and to examine the role of Gus Zizan in its glorification on TikTok. The research employs a qualitative approach using netnography and in-depth interviews with several Generation Z informants. The findings reveal that visual representations and religious-romantic narratives on TikTok shape Generation Z's perception that early marriage is an ideal choice, reinforced by social validation and parasocial relationships with public figures. Limited digital literacy renders adolescents vulnerable to uncritical acceptance of viral narratives, allowing their life standards and expectations to be shaped more by social media algorithms than by social realities. Furthermore, Gus Zizan's creative religious content significantly strengthens the glorification of child marriage, although it potentially generates adverse impacts such as limited educational aspirations, gender inequality, and socio-economic vulnerability. This study highlights the importance of digital literacy and ethical online preaching to prevent the normalization of child marriage among youth. Keywords: Generation Z, TikTok, child marriage, social perception, religious influencer

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of a community empowerment program through the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) based on squid processing in Langgula Village, Batudaa Pantai District, Gorontalo Regency. The research focuses on how the program influences economic welfare, product innovation, production efficiency, and marketing strategies among coastal communities. This study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach, involving seven key informants consisting of village officials, fishermen, and MSME actors. Secondary data were also obtained from literature, statistical reports, and program documentation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, then processed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing following the Miles and Huberman framework. The results indicate that the empowerment program significantly improved community welfare by providing alternative sources of income, particularly for women involved in MSME activities. Product innovations such as panada cumi (squid-filled pastry), squid chili sauce, ila bulo cumi (grilled squid), and squid dumplings emerged as outcomes of training and mentoring. The use of modern equipment enhanced production efficiency and hygiene, while promotional strategies through social media and local festivals expanded market reach. However, challenges remain in terms of limited capital, restricted market access, and inadequate infrastructure. Overall, the program has transformed community members into active development actors, strengthened household economies, fostered women's group collaboration, and increased women's participation in village development

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify factors that influence adaptation and to analyze the socio-economic adaptation strategies of stilt house communities on the banks of the Kahayan River, Pahandut Seberang, Palangka Raya. This study conducted descriptive qualitative research with a case study in Pahandut Seberang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation of seven key informants, namely heads of families who had lived in the area for at least five years. The results showed that economic factors and river-dependent occupations, such as fish cages, which require physical proximity, were the main reasons for choosing stilt houses. There are three main types of adaptation used. The first is physical adaptation, which includes independent drinking water treatment and floating stilt houses; the second is economic adaptation, which includes dual livelihood strategies, such as fishing and fish cages; and the last is social adaptation, which is created by enhancing mutual cooperation and solidarity among residents to overcome infrastructure limitations and environmental impacts. Overall, stilt house communities use socio-economic adaptation strategies to demonstrate local resilience to development pressures and environmental change. These findings are crucial in helping local governments develop more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable policies for riverside communities.

Abstract

The process of leadership regeneration in Hinduism is an important issue for maintaining the continuity of traditions, ceremonies, and social stability in society. This study examines the Hindu community in Sumberasri Village, Banyuwangi Regency, which faces difficulties in finding successors to religious leaders. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative through interviews, observation, and document collection. Max Weber's concept of traditional authority is used to analyze the legitimacy of leadership based on culture and ancestral heritage, while Karl Marx's social structure theory analyzes the influence of economic aspects on leadership regeneration. The results of the study reveal three main challenges, namely strict customary regulations, the limited economic conditions of the families of prospective leaders, and the low interest of the younger generation in religious aspects. Social and economic factors have proven to be obstacles in the process of succession of religious leadership, which previously relied heavily on traditional values. This study recommends improving community-based religious education and the active involvement of the younger generation in ritual activities as a strategy to strengthen the process of succession of Hindu leadership in the future. This study recommends improving community-based religious education and actively involving the younger generation in ritual activities as strategies to strengthen the process of Hindu leadership regeneration in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of Baznas assistance on the welfare of recipients in Tumbihe Village, Kabila District, focusing on how the assistance contributes to improving quality of life and economic empowerment. Baznas assistance not only serves as support for daily economic needs but is also directed toward promoting productive business development, particularly for recipients running micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The study employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with purposively selected recipients to obtain relevant and representative information regarding their experiences in utilizing the assistance. The findings indicate that Baznas assistance positively affects family income, saving capacity, and the development of micro-enterprises, including business expansion, increased customer base, and improved product competitiveness. However, the study also identifies several challenges that affect the effectiveness of the assistance, such as difficulty separating business and household finances, limited capital, and unstable business income due to fluctuations in customer demand. These findings underscore that, in addition to fund distribution, continuous mentoring and supervision are necessary to ensure that Baznas assistance is optimally utilized, thereby creating long-term impacts on recipients' welfare.

Abstract

The dependence of farmers on middlemen remains a complex socio-economic issue in rural Indonesia. According to data from the Gorontalo Utara District Agricultural Office (2024), approximately 78% of farmers in Sumalata Timur Subdistrict continue to rely on middlemen for farming capital and crop distribution due to limited access to formal financial institutions. This study aims to analyze the forms of farmers' dependency on middlemen, the resulting socio-economic impacts, and the adaptive strategies employed to reduce such dependency in Koluwoka Village, Sumalata Timur Subdistrict, Gorontalo Utara Regency. The study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach, involving eight key informants consisting of farmers, village officials, and middlemen. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The findings reveal two main forms of dependency: economic dependency, which includes the need for agricultural capital, production facilities, and household necessities; and social dependency, characterized by reciprocal relationships based on trust and indebtedness. Middlemen not only serve as financial providers but also assist in meeting educational, household, and traditional ceremonial expenses, reinforcing an unequal patron-client relationship. Based on Robert Putnam's theory of social capital, the relationship between farmers and middlemen demonstrates strong bonding social capital within the community but weak bridging social capital connecting farmers to formal economic institutions. The adaptive strategies adopted by farmers to reduce dependency include forming independent farmer groups, establishing internal savings and loan activities, and collaborating with local cooperatives. The study implies the importance of strengthening social capital, improving financial literacy, and empowering farmers economically through inclusive access to capital and community-based institutional support.
