Abstract

According to Freud, the life instinct (Eros) and the death instinct (Thanatos) can be compatible despite the fact that the life instinct was purposedly to maintain the continuity of life while the death instinct aims to dispel the life. The purpose of this study is to elaborate the concept of dualism between the life and death instincts in R.L. Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The researcher used qualitative research methods to process and analyze the data. The result of this study found that the main character Henry Jekyll had behaviors which contradict the Victorian norms that made he thought he had dualism within. Jekyll did action to separate the bad sides of him by the chemical practices. The fact that both life and death instincts worked collectively made Jekyll’s plans cannot reach its goals. The madness due to the ideal self-concept which had a tendency towards narcissistic pathology was finally destroyed as a result of colliding with reality. This situation resulted Henry Jekyll lost the meaning of his life as the symbol of psychical death, which at the end of the story, it continued with real death of Jekyll's body.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the various patterns of cleft clause in Bahasa Indonesia and their meaning. The research data were taken from Indonesian translation of the Quran. The data here included all the cleft sentences in the source. They were then sorted and analyzed based on theories of cleft sentences of Indonesian and English. The results of the analysis show that the cleft sentences in Bahasa Indonesia are constructed in Predicate (P) – Subject (S), P-S-Adjunct (A), and P-A-S. In these patterns, the cleft sentences are the true cleft sentences. Besides, there are other constructions found, namely: S-P, S-P-A, A-S-P, and S-A-P. However, the sentences in the patterns make pseudo cleft. Both group are similar in terms of the elements and the presuposition they imply. The difference is only in the order in which the pseudo cleft put the focus at the back, or on the right side of the copula, which means the focused and its priority are slightly reduced. In Bahasa Indonesia, cleft sentence is not constituted by two clauses because its clefted constituent can stand by itself as a cleft noun/phrase (for example, “mereka”, “merekalah” or “adalah mereka”), without having to be put as a complement of a clause such as that of its English counterpart (“it is they”).

Abstract

In the context of Eastern culture, society views single women and men unequally. The demand for immediate marriage in women is greater than that of men. This research was conducted to reveal the resilience of single women represented by the protagonist of the novel Ganjil-Genap (2020) by Almira Bastari. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences were collected using the listening technique and notes through closed reading. The data are then classified, interpreted, and then analyzed using feminist literary criticism. The theoretical foundation in this research comes from the ideas of Hurlock and Schoon. The results showed that (1) The institution of marriage is still coveted by independent, well-established, and logical female figures because singleness is a social category that is considered problematic. (2) In exercising resilience, women go through the overcoming, steering through, bouncing back, and reaching out stages. (3) The achievement that the female character produces from resilience is turning her position from object to subject.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the main problems of AI-based translation machine, Google Neural Machine Translation System (GNMT) or Google Translate, during an English-Indonesian book translation process. It also has the objective to find the solutions for the problems. To approach the translation issues, the study uses Christiane Nord’s four translation problems which consists of pragmatic translation problems, convention-related translation problems, linguistic translation problems, and text-specific translation problems. Molina and Albir’s techniques of translation are applied to fix the problems. The study uses qualitative methods to analyze the translation issues. From 5447 translated words, it is found that the main problems of Google Translate during book translation are linguistic translation problems, and there are seven translation techniques involved to deal with the problems.

Abstract

A novel may reflect the political interests and actions of the author. The author can make a story that is purposed to alter common consciousness. This article uses historicism as an interpretation theory. Historicism is used to avoid careless interpretation. With historicism, the story written in the novel is matched with historical events written in some history books. Forrest Carter writes a lot about US Civil War. He, in purpose, does not write about slavery that is commonly read as the cause of the US Civil War. He writes a lot about the murder of women and children by the northern US army soldiers in southern districts. He also writes a lot about the cooperation of his white character with a Cherokee. Above all written by Forrest Carter, the influence of his life and his political interests are seen.
