Abstract

This study aims to examine the subject of women in colonial discourse by natives through the novel Mei Merah 1998: Kala Arwah Berkisah. To achieve this goal, descriptive qualitative is used as a research method. The data source is the novel Mei Merah 1998: Kala Arwah Berkisah (2018) by Naning Pranoto and all information related to the research topic. The research data ranges from language and sentences to thoughts in the text of the novel which contains narratives of female subjects who experience oppression and other related data. Data collection techniques are done by reading and taking notes. This research shows that Chinese women in Indonesia are in a subaltern position in the societal hierarchy. These women experienced double oppression, from their identity as Chinese under native domination and from their position as women under male domination. The events of May 1998 were proof of colonialism against ethnic Chinese women.  The voice of the silenced minority group is attempted by the author to construct through the narration of the female subject in the novel. These Chinese females in this narrative experience ambivalence and mimicry as a way of resisting colonial discourse from the dominating natives.

Abstract

This study explores the use of irony, parody, and pastiche in Sutardji Calzoum Bachri's poem Tanah Air Mata through a postmodernist lens. This research is motivated by the fact that literary works play a role in conveying deep meanings and criticisms. Sutardji, a renowned contemporary Indonesian poet, often addresses profound themes such as social injustice. This research aims to comprehensively analyze how postmodern elements are employed in the poem to critique social and political issues. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study involves textual analysis of the poem and secondary sources. The findings reveal that irony, the most dominant element in this poem, underscores the disparity between hope and reality in the form of suffering society feels amidst Indonesia's prosperity. Parody imitates the dominant narrative in Indonesia’s national anthem lyric, and pastiche blends traditional and modern elements to create layered meanings. Moreover, intertextuality is used to analyze these elements, linking the poetic text to grand narratives and other cultural symbols, creating a dialogue that enriches meaning and inspires readers to look critically at social reality. This approach enriches the understanding of a poem entitled Tanah Air Mata and demonstrates the power of postmodern aesthetics in contemporary poetry to highlight and critique social injustices.

Abstract

Pentigraf is a three-paragraph short story produced by a creative writing community called Kampung Pentigraf Indonesia (the Indonesian Pentigraf Village or KPI). By composing Pentigraf, the authors can articulate the social phenomena such as corruption with greater clarity. Since the 1970s, corruption has become a problem in Indonesia. KPI published a Pentigraf anthology entitled Hanya Nol Koma Satu (Only Zero Point One) in 2020 to express concerns about corruption. KPI has more than 3,000 members on Facebook from diverse backgrounds, including female homemakers, who, in this anthology, discuss masculine dominance themes connected to corruption. This study shows how masculine norms and gendered perspectives contribute to the perpetuation of corruption, as articulated through Pentigraf, written by female homemakers. This study gathered the data from fifteen Pentigrafs written by female homemakers. Employing Bourdieu’s theory of masculine domination, this document analysis analyzes the intrinsic structure of pentigraf by homemakers in Hanya Nol Koma Satu to deconstruct how masculine standards correlate with textual representations of corruption. The results show that male characters in the Pentigrafs have the personalities of being desirous and indifferent to the suffering of others because they cling to wealth achievement and supremacy. Pentigraf is a mini-fiction that is not easy to analyze deeply. Nevertheless, it can articulate moral teachings and capture social phenomena.

Abstract

This study provides a reading of Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other in the light of Patricia Hill Collins’ framework of the Matrix of Domination to see how the novel generates Black women's discourse. This study aims to analyse the operation of the matrix of domination whereby the complex and interlocking oppression of Black women emerges in every domain of power. This study also attempts to reveal the forms of resistance as depicted throughout the storyline. A qualitative method was applied as the approach of this study, as the data are in the form of words and utterances. The writer collected the data by close-reading and coding the utterances and the narrator’s narration. The results of this study showed that the matrix of domination reappears in various forms of complex and interlocking oppression. Moreover, the study reveals the ways and strategies that Black women employ to resist entrenched interlocking oppression and reclaim cultural narratives through various means, including self-definition, educating Black daughters, and voicing Black aspirations and achievements.

Abstract

This study compared narrative elements in Pak Belalang texts in the form of hikayat and folklore. The purpose of this research was to find out the narrative form between two literary works based on the time of publication but sourced from the same text. This research can contribute to modern philology to know the history of text development. In this case, text variations are considered creations. The problem focused on the difference in the description of Pak Belalang's story through the past view in the form of hikayat as well as the modern view through a simplified folklore book. The comparative literature method was used to relate the differences and similarities between the texts. The elements were summarized using narratology theory to facilitate research. Hikayat and folklore were the main data for the comparative study. The research sources were Hikayat Pak Belalang and Cerita Rakyat Pak Belalang. The narratology theory examines the problem in five main points of discussion, namely: 1) order, 2) duration, 3) frequency, 4) moods, and 5) voices. Through these five elements, similarities were found in moods and voices. Meanwhile, differences were found in the elements of order, duration, and frequency.
