Abstract

This study analyzes the early language development of young Balinese preschool children in Singaraja. Specifically, the study focuses on the early discourse abilities of the novice language learners. The study involved ten 4 ? years ? old preschool children and their caregivers (parents, extended family members, and nannies) from Singaraja. The data were analyzed to see what discourse types were used by the children and in what language (Indonesian or Balinese). The results suggest that children produce more response discourse type in their utterances due to the fact that these young language learners have very limited communicative repertoire. It seems that their conversation range primarily revolves around the typical question and answer conversational dyad. Furthermore, it has been found that young children make use of the Indonesian language in their responses more than their native language (Balinese language). This language preference may be due to the fact that children are exposed to L2 influences such as: movies, song, and other learning materials.

Abstract

As literature reflects human life, the characterizations of a fictional character in a novel can be analyzed as the reflections of the subconscious of the character in Freud's psychoanalysis. The present study will describe the characterizations of Lucy Pevensie as the main character in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and elaborate on how the main character's subconscious as reflected through her characterizations affects the plot development of the novel. Through the application of close reading with the perspective of Freudian psychoanalysis, the present study reveals that Lucy Pevensie's curious, kind,  curious, kind, truthful, caring, loyal, and brave characterizations are as reflections of her id, ego, and superego. They are affected by the behaviors and characters around her and set the plot in motion (starting from disjunction, trajectory, proleptic events, reversal, discovery, and ending). As the end of the plot was resolved with Lucy Pevensie's bravery that leads to the saving of Edmund Pevensie from his demise, Lucy Pevensie's characterizations and their effects on the plot development implies that the combination of instinct, observation of reality and a deep conscience can be beneficial for the greater good of the society.

Abstract

21st century education requires teachers to be able to understand the 21st century skills and apply them in daily classroom practice. Although necessary for teachers, research on investigating the teachers’ perceived attitudes toward the implementation of the 21st century skills for teaching English in primary schools in Bali is still limited. This study aimed to investigate primary school’s English teachers’ perceived attitudes toward the implementation of 21st-century skills. The design of this study was a sequential embedded mixed method with dominantly used qualitative design. This study used 3 English teachers and two headmasters from 2 primary schools in Tabanan regency as the subject. The data were collected by using a questionnaire and interview to gain the data of teachers’ perceived attitudes toward the implementation of the 21st century skills. From the data that have been obtained, primary English teachers gave positive attitudes toward 95,8% of the skills in the implementation of 21st century skills. The interview section showed that the teacher lacks understanding of 21st century skills because of a lack of in-depth information about 21st century skills. Moreover, the teachers have to be aware of 21st century skills in the assessment as one of the concepts that are adapted for Kurikulum 2013.
