Abstract

Supply Chain Managementcan be viewed as both an emergent field of practice and an emerging academicdiscipline. For academicians, it is an emerging field of study, where theprimary outputs are theory, insights, and research. For practitioners, it is anemergent field where the outputs involve new relationships, new developments, and new practice. Supply chain management is ultimately about influencing thebehavior of professionals and enriching knowledge of students in particulardirections and in particular ways. Supply chain management, a field developedfrom business practice and research, is undergoing a major transportation. Itis changing from tactical in nature (where the major focus is on cost anddelivery) to a field that is strategic in nature. This book is a compilation of18 papers that primarily take stock of developments in theory and practice insome important areas of current research.

Abstract

This book contains of the investigation is about the process of decision making in supply chain management using a real options analysis framework. Specifically, the authors address issues regarding the optimal inventory level to hedge against demand uncertainties; the timing for equipment capacity implementation under market product mix complexity; the timing for workforce capacity reinforcement aiming market service requirements; and the decisions between integration and outsourcing in an uncertainty environment. Discrete and continuous time methodologies were used to identify the optimal value and timing of the options to adopt, when the demand is stochastic. Additionally, the effect of market requirements, such as product mix complexity and service level, were also taken into consideration. The demand is modeled under different stochastic processes; the impact of unexpected shocks is also explored, which enhances the generalization of the models to different business conditions. The applicability of the models enables the diversification and enrichment of the literature on the real options approach, within supply chain concept. Flexible inventory levels and the flexible capacity are supply chain features that can be used to deal with demand uncertainty.

Abstract

Relationships between businesses as customers and suppliers have been an area of research for a long time (Hkansson, 1982; Hkansson Snehota, 1995). Some of the interacting business relation entities include corporations, small businesses, consumers and minority business enterprises. Through the years the growth of Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) movement in the United States can be traced from the 1970s when President Nixon opened the first Office of the Minority Business Enterprise. Today Minority Business Enterprises in the United States are classified as businesses that are owned and controlled by individuals identified as minorities (National Minority Supplier Diversity Council, 2011; Shah Ram, 2006). Growth is evident in underrepresented fields such as construction, industries and wholesale (Bates, 2001). This growth has led to stronger relationships between more corporate partners and MBEs (National Minority Supplier Diversity Council, 2011). Through the National Minority Supply Development Council Network (NMSDC), MBEs are connected to 3,500 corporate members including Americas top publicly-owned, privately-owned and foreign-owned companies, as well as universities, hospitals and other buying institutions (National Minority Supplier Diversity Council, 2011). To sustain this growth, the relationships between the corporate member participants and the MBEs require cultivation. Yet, no documented framework describes the relationships which are crucial to this growth. Therefore, this paper proposes to enhance the discussion on MBE-Corporation relationship. The paper explores the importance of MBE-Corporation relationship in expanding MBEs. In addition the paper develops an initial conceptual MBE-Corporation relationship framework that explains the different conceptual levels that lead to attaining and maintaining such a relationship.

Abstract

Automatic identification technologies (AIT) such as barcodes and radio frequency identification (RFID) are commonly used in inventory management. However, these AITs have operational limitations due to their system reliability with respect to the transponder or tag readability. This research introduces a model for a system reliability approach that evaluates the impact of AIT system on economic order quantities (EOQ).  We introduce the model with deterministic demand and then we introduce a real-world application that demonstrates the model’s usage for NASA’s International Space Station (ISS).  The information for the described scenario is derived from research funded by NASA EPSCOR.  Results indicate that AIT, specifically RFID, system reliability have a significant impact on the cost for sending, storing, and consuming inventory on ISS operations and other weight driven and expensive operations.

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison of a variety of individual representations in a procedure based on the Genetic Algorithm for a capacitated model for supply chain network design (SCND) that considers the cost of quality (COQ) as well as the traditional manufacturing and distribution costs. The model is known as the SCND-COQ and can be used at a strategic planning level to maximize profit subject to meeting an overall quality level. The SCND-COQ model internally computes quality costs for the whole supply chain considering the interdependencies among business entities, whereas previous works have assumed exogenously and independently given COQ functions (nonlinear functions). The SCND-COQ model is a constrained mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) which is challenging to solve because it combines all the difficulties of both of its subcategories: the combinatorial nature of mixed integer programming and the difficulty of solving non-convex nonlinear problems. The aim is to maximize the profit of the supply chain subject to: demand, capacity, flow balance, and overall quality level of the final product constraints. We provide a solution method based on the genetic algorithm (GA) for solving instances of practical and realistic size. We compare the performance of the GA with several individual representations and a greedy constructive heuristic procedure. Managerial insights for practitioners are provided and the results of computational testing are reported.

Abstract

We present a benchmarking study on efficiencies or performance of various global manufacturers in the steel manufacturing supply chain using the analysis of DEA models. We select appropriate variables including costs of goods sold as an input variable for purchasing performance measure and net sales as an output for distribution performance measure to be used in our DEA analysis. Our analysis results from the selected five international steel manufacturers would help supply chain managers in steel manufacturing industry to evaluate and compare other large steel manufacturers for making possible strategic alliance decisions with publically available data.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the implications of international operations on the quality of airline service supply chain at the regional level. As a first study, we take an operations viewpoint of how well the work is done and explore multiple quality dimensions of the service supply chain at both international and regional level. In particular, we study the service quality of supplier (ground) services, in-flight products, in-flight entertainment systems, and flight attendants efficiencies. We use a global airlines dataset and quality assessments provided by a renowned quality-audit organization to test our hypotheses. We find that when an airline serves international market segment in addition to its regional operations, the quality of the service supply chain also gets better in the regional market. When managers design and manage service quality expectations in multiple market segments, service quality expectations in higher market segment influences the service quality in lower market segment.

Abstract

The modern supply chain management is witnessing a radical transformation as an effect of competitive strategy. The raw material supplier as well as consumable suppliers often faces the situation of their product return. We conducted a recent survey from the raw material, consumable suppliers and the manufacturing units for examining reverse logistics performance in terms of cost effectiveness and flexibility. This study focuses on finding the relationship between the independent variables and the cost and flexibility as performance indicators of reverse logistics. The result of this study provides a template guideline for designing a cost effective and flexible reverse logistics program.

Abstract

Abstract - The aim of this study is to explain an investigation over the potential relationships between integrator and grower involvement towards business performance in broiler production. The potential role of employees skill levels as moderating variable between the aforementioned independent and the dependant variables are discussed. Broiler supply chain practices and its corresponding performance indicators in the form of broiler farming operations are among the important measures in the dependant variable (business performance). Based on the extensive survey of relevant literature, a research framework is then proposed. The inclusion of integrator involvement (antecedent), the skill levels (moderating variable) and business performance (dependent variable) in the proposed framework is the main contribution of this study. It is expected that this study will be beneficial to broiler industry, relevant policy makers and the growing body of knowledge of supply chain investigation in the livestock businesses. Keywords: supply chain, broiler, supplier involvement, integrator involvement, grower involvement and business performance
