Abstract

In a global competitive market, meeting customers’ requirements is not enough for organizations that are striving for success and welfare. Another goal has to be meet which is the cost challenge .Enterprises need to offer highest quality at the lowest price. To achieve this, organizations must identify potential sources of savings by making an effective control of manufacturing costs. Since quality costs constitute a significant part of these costs, it becomes an imperative for companies to track, quantify and rationalize quality related costs by developing a measurement system adapted to their activities. Most companies, however, are unaware of the quantum of their quality cost and therefore underestimate it. In this context, appears the need to present quality cost as an effective tool of highlighting deficiencies in the system by giving an insight to the huge impact of quality cost on the bottom line as well as on the financial position of the organization. This paper presents a case study conducted in a cement industry that gives awareness and guidance to what requires attention of top management.

Abstract

In todays competitive logistics environment, green and sustainable approaches are gaining academic interest. This paper aims to develop a theoretical framework to enhance understanding and academic knowledge on the antecedents of green warehouse practices (GWP). This paper employs content analysis approach to extract the potential factors to GWP. It then reviews and synthesises the GWP factors by applying two prominent management concepts of stakeholder and institutional theories. Through the review and discussion, six GWP factors; employee involvement, top management commitment, owner support, governmental pressure, industry competition, and customer demand are highlighted. Additionally, six propositions of GWP are presented and the framework developed in this conceptual paper underlines the internal and external GWP instigators. The conceptual nature of this paper offers a preliminary insights of GWP where the synergy between external and internal elements must coexist to successfully implement GWP. The developed theoretical framework presents a platform for future empirical GWP studies.

Abstract

The competitiveness of a seaport highly depends on its efficiency especially in terms of logistics practices, functions and activities and how all that is integrated with those of the other players in the supply chain.Despite the well-articulated importance of ports and terminals in integrated logistics, research on the success factors of port logistics integration remains scattered. The objective of this paper is to provide a review of the literature and based on this; provide an insight into how seaports and terminals may improve their logistics integration. A structured analysis of 78 papers published in Scopus indexed journals in logistics, supply chain and port management during the period 2000-2018 is conducted. A multidimensional conceptual framework for port logistics integration is proposed to incorporate the role of the three infrastructural variables emerging from the recent developments in the port logistics environment. The literature review has found the logistics process and operations, information integration, value-added services, and logistics practices being influential factors in logistics integration. Based on the research discussion and conclusion which is drawn from the literature review offer a basis for future research, both in respect of research approaches, concept definition and the select of theoretical foundation. The framework could be more detailed on each factor and consider actors perspective. Further testing and examination of the framework are needed for the validity of the results. This study questioned current literature in port logistics integration, highlight role infrastructural factors and the actor's role in the port logistics chain.

Abstract

Lack of awareness is the most significant barrier to implementing green procurement practices among procurement managers. Procurement managers seldom consider the effects of procurement on the environment. This situation will cause many environmental problems such as carbon dioxide emissions, climate change, greenhouse effects, pollution, and deforestation. Hence, the purpose of this study is to identify the current practices of green procurement in furniture manufacturing companies. Additionally, this study intends to determine barriers to green procurement practices in furniture manufacturing companies. In this study, 118 procurement officers and managers were chosen randomly from furniture manufacturing companies in Batu Pahat, Johor. This study applied a quantitative method and utilized the Statistical Package Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0 to analyse the data from the responses of questionnaires. Descriptive analysis was employed to achieve the research objectives. The findings of this study have revealed that current practices of green procurement in furniture manufacturing companies include ensuring the safe, incoming movement of product to facilities, followed by ensuring that suppliers locations are operated in a safe manner. Meanwhile, the main barrier to green procurement practices is that procedures for the implementation of green procurement are time-consuming. This study is important for furniture manufacturing companies to use green procurement practices in their operation and production processes.

Abstract

Literature revealed that both the internal and external factors may result in business failure among Small and Medium Size Enterprise (SME). One of the external factors identified is non-availability or deficiency in logistics and supply chain operations. Thus, this study was conducted with the objective to identify the most severe logistics and supply chain issues faced by SMEs in Malaysia. Quantitative research design was employed, where data were collected through mail survey questionnaire. The frequency of respondents selecting 4 (Severe) and 5 (Very severe) for each survey item were calculated, in order to determine which issues are the most severe among Malaysian SMEs. The items are then ranked based on the highest number of respondents selecting 4 and 5. It provides more meaningful information on the most severe logistics and supply chain issues faced by SMEs, if compared to analysing the mean score of each item as the mean value may be distorted by high standard deviation. Findings indicate that difficulties and inaccuracies in forecasting inventory top the list, followed by inability to fulfil orders due to inventory shortages and keeping wrong mix of inventories. Thus, it can be concluded that inventory related issues are the most critical problems faced by Malaysian SMEs. This study contributes towards logistics and supply chain management literature as it provides an in depth information on the logistics and supply chain related issues faced by SMEs. For practitioners and the relevant government agency, this study sheds light on the most severe issues so that firms and government agency can focus their efforts on rectifying these severe logistics and supply chain issues
