Abstract

This article aims to measure poverty based on the perspective of water resource using the mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. The study was conducted in Salatiga which is rich of water resources potential. Although it has a highwater potential, distribution of raw water by the PDAM could only cover 40% households, while other households rely on springs in order to meet the needs of raw water. The water springs spreads in nearly 64 spots in Salatiga, however, they reduced to only 36 spots due to many factors. Some springs which contributes to large water flow are usually located in a settlement with limited access to good sanitation. Our study however, shows that the Water Poverty Index of Salatiga was 0.84 or 84% which indicates a good level of welfare and human resource quality of the people. This is also in alignment to the Human Development Index which was found to 77.13. Finally, the prosperity of the community and the human resource could be increased when the policy on water resource and environmental management is consistently implemented.

Abstract

This paper discusses the implications of the tragedy series that have general developed strategies in the communities in Papua and how the communities responded the tragedy. Along with the memories of the violence and how they have been suffering by the tragedy, there was also a “culture” to remind “silent”—afraid to bear witness. The communities became a muted group. The culture of the silences also grew in the education matter. Materials in formal education in Indonesia somehow fail to recognize the tragedy series that happened to the people of Papua. There are many encouragements to Papuan to break the culture of silence, brave to be witnesses, educate others about the tragedy. In this paper the discussion will explore the relation between the violence that the Papuan had been experienced personally and the culture of silence that later grown and settled in their communities.

Abstract

The silver handicrafts industry in the Celuk Village is growing rapidly along with the development of Bali's tourism sector. The number of tourists visiting Bali has increased from time to time and it affects the increase of souvenir purchases number, including silver-crafts. Celuk Viillage is a traditional Balinese village that has changed into a tourist attraction with its trademark in the form of gold and especially, silver. The sustainability of the silver handicraft industry in Celuk Village is supported by the harmony of the collaboration between entrepreneurs and craftsmen in running the business. This research found that the Celuk Village silver handicrafts industry shows ability to develop and maintains its business, also to face many different challenges. The entrepreneurs and craftsmen in Celuk Village not only from local residents but also include migrants from outside Bali. This paper describes the habitus, realm, capital (social, cultural, economic and symbolic capital) and practice through Pierre Bourdieu’s perspective. The explanation is based on the empirical experience of local and migrant populations as craftsmen and entrepreneurs when pioneering, developing, and maintaining silver-craft business in Celuk. The research found that different from the locals, who can utilize social capital and cultural capital when pioneering, use economic capital when developing business, then symbolic capital in sustaining business, the access of the migrants to economic capital and symbolic capital is very limited. Therefore migrants use social capital and cultural capital when pioneering, developing and sustaining their business. Regarding to Bourdieu, the difference findings between local and migrants in Celuk Village shows that there is a fight over resources (capital) in the realm, and it forms a new habitus which is differentiation in social stratification between locals as dominant and migrant entrepreneurs as subordinate entrepreneurs.
