Abstract

This study examined the relationship between social identity and prejudice against ethnic Papuan students with intergroup anxiety as mediators and quantity of contact and belief as moderators. This study using a quantitative cross-sectional survey design. Respondents (n=452) were students in Surabaya selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected online using Google Forms by employed several scales that were RIVEC (Rejection, Intimacy, Values, Emotions, and Culture) prejudice scale, a-three factors social identity scale, intergroup anxiety scale, contact quantity scale, and belief scale. The results of hypothesis testing showed that intergroup anxiety significantly mediates the relationship between social identity and prejudice against ethnic Papuan students (β= -0.25; p<0.001). The results also revealed the moderator roles of belief (β = -0.13; p<0.05) and quantity of contact (β = 0.07; p<0.05) in predicting prejudice. This finding can be concluded that the emotions associated with low intergroup anxiety play a role in mediated high social identity with low prejudice scores. Increased contact with outgroups did not guarantee a decrease in prejudice scores in people with high social identities. Still, the involvement of cognitive processes through positive beliefs by individuals acts as a buffer effect so that people with high social identities can decrease prejudice scores.

Abstract

Pagoda as a cultural product and religious institution that must be maintained as a national cultural treasure. Siu Hok Bio Temple is one of the oldest temples in Semarang. The pagoda is able to maintain the authenticity of the building and the values of Chinese culture and Taoist religious values, and even become a center of reference for the culture and values of Taoism. However, there are concerns about its sustainability because there is no younger generation who want to continue their cultural and religious values. Starting from this, this research wants to examine by focusing on the efforts of pagodas to maintain their existence as centers of Chinese culture and Taoist values in areas where the majority are of other religions. This research uses a theoretical approach through the perspective of social exchange evolution theory developed by Sillar, 2019 and ICT (Integrative Communication Theory) theory, 2005. The research method uses subjective interpretive research, a qualitative approach through participatory research. The conclusion of the research shows that the external approach to the environment is carried out in participatory communication quite successfully. However, in building communication with the congregation the pagoda tends to be puritanical and conservative, so that integrative communication cannot be carried out, which in the end does not occur conducive social exchange. The recommendation is to separate the values of Taoism and Chinese culture in order to be adaptive to the younger generation who have entered the digital world.

This study aims to find out the relationship of individual characteristics of the community to participation in mangrove forest management. Respondents to this study were 35 people who were members of community groups in Margasari Village. The stages and methods carried out in this study are: determination of the weight and score of individual characteristics of community and community participation using the Likert scale method with questionnaire instruments; and analysis of the relationship of individual characteristics of community to participation using the spearman rank method. The results showed that the community has actively carried out mangrove forest utilization and management activities in Margasari Village. This can be seen in the conditions of individual characteristics of community. People who are of productive age can carry out and carry out a job and activities optimally. In addition, the level of community activity can be seen in 90% of respondents who were educated last at the high school level, which shows that the mindset, absorption, and knowledge related to mangrove forests and their management are quite good. This study concludes that the individual characteristics of community do not indicate a close and significant relationship to community participation. Thus, the changes that occur in the individual characteristics of the community will not change the pattern of community activities and activities in the management of mangrove forests in Margasari Village.
