Abstract

Willingnesstocommunicate(WTC) is defined as the intention to communicate given a choice, continues to establish itself as a determining construct in bringing about success or failure in learning a foreign language (Dӧrnyei,2005,Peng&Woodrow,2010). One of the factors affected it was cultural diversities from varies ethnics. Hence, learners’ ethnicity in willingness to communicate is a necessity that has to be considered in language education in multilingual context. In this study, the researchers investigated whether there is any statistically significant relationship between learners’ ethnicity and willingness to communicate in classroom discussion of graduate students of Universitas Negeri Padang that focused on minority and majority group. To collect the data, the questionnaire of willingness to communicate was distributed to the participants that consist of 38 graduate students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The quantitative data gathered through these instruments were analyzed to determine the degree of correlation between these two variables. Besides, individual semi-structured interviews with some of the participants were used to obtain supportive data. The results of correlational analyses revealed that there was a strong relationship between learners’ Willingness to Communicate and their ethnicity differences. So it can be concluded that a significant relationship between learner ethnicity and willingness to communicate can be seen in classroom discussion that the majority ethnic dominate and have willingness to express their ideas rather than minority group that come from minority ethnic in classroom discussion.

Abstract

This paper focuses on shaping of the new trend of digital media in English teaching and finding the best ways to take advantages from the technologies in pedagogical framework. The new trend of digital media technologies including social networks (e.g. Second Life, Facebook. Twitter) offer opportunities for teachers to challenge previous centralized models of learning by connecting. sharing and discussing ideas with their students outside of the classroom and at great distance from each other. New digital media have become an important part in the life of our young generation. lt is a natural for teachers to take a close look at the trend and take it into consideration when lessons are conceptualized. By using these media, teachers are offered a great possibility to increase motivation, oral participation and thus language competence in almost every field. Our failure to provide language learning material resources must partly be due to teachers and parents who either do not appreciate or do not understand the power of social media. In this paper, I try to explore the importance of shaping the new trend of digital media in teaching English not just simply because the students are confronted with new digital media in their daily life anyway, but because of the fact that the more channels for the reception of information are used, the better for the students' language acquisition or their learning process in general.

The result and discussion of this research indicate that (1) the macro structure contained in the discourse, namely human rights abuses (2) the superstructure, the introduction is opened by US labeling China, Russia, Iran and Korea as "morally reprehensible" on rights countries and highlighted by the arguments of US Deputy Secretary of State, John J. Sullivan and US relations with those countries (3) the microstructure, in semantic analysis, the negative statements used by the US to criticize China, Russia, Iran and Korea. In terms of syntax, the conjunction ‘and’ and ‘that’ dominate the content of this news to connect each clauses. In Stylistics, choice of negative words is used. From the rhetorical point of view, the size and type of letters indicate that human rights abuses are focussed.
