Abstract

AbstractThe social life of waria is often marked by challenges and discrimination from the surrounding community. In social spaces, the existence of waria is still difficult to accept by some communities, especially in conservative environments. This often leads to difficulties in finding employment and accessing adequate healthcare services. As a result, some waria are forced to become sex workers who are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Nevertheless, there are also waria communities that actively advocate for their rights and form supportive social networks. This article is the result of qualitative research, using a case study approach. The findings of this study indicate that the social life of waria in the Gowongan Lor Muslim community still faces challenges. Their presence still generates both support and opposition, largely due to their gender identity and activities that are considered deviant, such as engaging in sex work and being vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Keywords: Social life, waria, sex worker, HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to explore the stigma received by Muslims who work in Catholic schools and the stigma management carried out by the subject for stigmatization and at the same time as an effort to reduce the social tension that arises. Departing from an interpretive paradigm, this study explores four subjects who work as teachers in a Catholic school in the city of Surabaya. This study uses in-depth interviews for data collection techniques. This study finds that being a teacher in a Catholic school is a story about fighting against the notion of 'deviance'; 'strange'; as well as 'taboo' in the midst of a multicultural society. Therefore, identity as a teacher in a Catholic school has led to a response that ends in stigma within each subject. The stigma comes from the closest environment, namely the spouse's relatives and peers who are fellow Muslims. These forms of stigma include being considered deviant, sarcasm, and being labeled as infidel. Meanwhile, stigma management , which is carried out as an effort to manage stigma and reduce tension, is to clarify, make the stigma a source of humor, and hide the stigmatized identity. This study also found a new concept called 'manoritas'.Keywords : Identity; Manoritas; Stigma; Stigma Management

Abstract

This study aims to explore social stratification in education during the Dutch colonial era in Probolinggo. Previous studies have shown that various educational policies implemented by the Dutch in Probolinggo were intended to prepare administrative and manual labor workers who would play an important role in building the economy. However, these policies have actually resulted in unfair social stratification in society. Although native education offered opportunities to obtain an education, these schools were established with a specific purpose: to meet the needs of manual labor workers for the benefit of Dutch capital. Native education mostly provided basic skills needed to work in specific sectors. This study was conducted using a historical approach consisting of heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography stages. The results confirm that Dutch colonial education policies in Probolinggo not only produced manual labor workers but also strengthened the position of the Dutch East Indies government. Keywords: Social Stratification, Education, Probolinggo, Dutch Colonial.

Abstract

Competition between modern markets and traditional markets has caused traditional markets to be in a marginalized position. This has caused the Central Government to create a traditional market revitalization program, hoping that market revitalization will make traditional markets better and reduce the gap between traditional markets and modern markets. Market revitalization was also carried out by the City Government of Malang in a comprehensive and holistic manner. The City Government of Malang did not only completely overhaul the market building but also made an innovation i.e. the School of Smart Traders' People's Market (Sepasar Pedas, abbrv. in Bahasa version). The implementation of innovations involve e-retribution, Declaration of the Digital Market Pilot, and the ASN Sobo Pasar Movement. However, in carrying out several stages of the revitalization, the City Government of Malang also encountered several constrains. To obtain data regarding some of the constraints that are considered as inhibiting factors, a qualitative approach was used. Thus, the results obtained that several inhibiting factors encountered in the field by the City Government of Malang, namely: Limited Budget, Unclearness investors, Rejection of market traders, and the Problems of market management including the distribution of EDC machines that are not evenly distributed in all markets, the implementation of e-retribution is also hampered by network signals and EDC machines that often have errors. Keywords: Market Revitalization; Traditional Market

Abstract

This study examines the denormalisation of sexual violence against women in the #MeToo movement-themed Hollywood films. The strong presence of the social-political #MeToo movement in the past decade has influenced Hollywood films. The movement plays a major role in increasing public awareness of how devastating sexual abuse is against women and in challenging the current patriarchal system in society. This study uses descriptive research methods and adopts thematic analysis to critically analyse the denormalisation of sexual violence against women in Hollywood films with the #MeToo movement as their theme. This research used three Hollywood films as the units of analyses: On the Record, Athlete A, and Bombshell. This study found that these films are essential in denormalising sexual violence against women on screen. The findings show the three important characteristics shared among these three films. First, they shed light on the existence of the power imbalance between the perpetrators and victims. Second, they show the transformation of female victims of sexual violence into feminist figures. Last, they denormalise sexual abuse. The findings benefit academics who are interested in movie and gender studies as well as practitioners who promote gender equality and women’s rights. Keywords : Hollywood film; the #MeToo Movement; Sexual Violence; Denormalisation of Sexual Violence
