Abstract

Fertilizer application is a crucial aspect of agricultural practices, especially for horticultural crops like cauliflower. Humbang Hasundutan Regency, a key horticultural hub in North Sumatra Province, has been significantly affected by rising chemical fertilizer costs, placing a financial strain on farmers. This study aimed to evaluate three fertilization strategies in terms of cost-efficiency, effectiveness, and their potential to reduce chemical fertilizer expenses. Using an experimental method, primary data were collected over one growing season to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of each experiment. Results showed that combining chemical and organic fertilizers improved cost-efficiency but did not enhance production effectiveness. Specifically, a 50:50 blend of chemical and organic fertilizers reduced fertilizer costs by IDR 1,468,400 per hectare. These findings indicate that incorporating organic fertilizers can be a viable approach for farmers to lower input costs and potentially improve farm sustainability.

Abstract

The non-formal education process aims to support farmers in enhancing their agriculture skills and achieving mutual interdependence. Enhancing the involvement of extension workers is believed to positively influence farming productivity. This study seeks to identify the role of extension in cocoa commodities and to examine the factors affecting the productivity improvement of cocoa farmers. The research was carried out in cocoa-producing areas, in Poso Regency. The sample size in this study was determined using Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis, following the minimum requirement of five times the number of research indicators, resulting in a total of 103 respondents. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using the Partial Least Square (PLS) approach with the Smart-PLS program. Factors such as farmer characteristics and the role of extension workers have a significant impact on improving farmer competency. Farmer competency can be improved through the role of extension workers based on the specific needs of cocoa farmers. This increase in competency has a direct impact on increasing farmer production and income. Farmers with higher competency will be able to optimize the use of agricultural inputs, such as the use of fertilizers and pesticides, and be more effective in various processes, such as cultivation, harvesting, post-harvest, processing, and marketing.

Abstract

The plantation sub-sector has a strategic role in the Indonesian economy. One of the plants in the plantation sub-sector that has the potential for economic growth and is superior in Indonesia is the tobacco plant. Bojonegoro Regency is one of the leading tobacco industry centers in Indonesia. However, farmer institutions in Bojonegoro are still weak and experience problems, so a more in-depth analysis of the institutional system of tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro is needed. This research aimed to provide insight into the institutional system of tobacco farmers and how Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) could be used as an effective planning tool. This research could also help governments and related institutions in designing better policies to support tobacco farmers in overcoming the challenges of this industry. ISM Output Results, based on Reachability Matrix (RM) Tobacco Farmers in sector IV (INDEPENDENT), tobacco agro-industry and agricultural services were also in the same sector, while those in sector III (LINKAGE) were Regional Governments and Exporters, and those in sector II (DEPENDENT) were a Farmer and Supplier Group.

Abstract

The global palm oil industry has become a focal point in agricultural trade due to its economic significance and environmental implications. As one of the world’s largest producers, Indonesia faces increasing pressure to maintain its competitiveness while addressing sustainability and trade policy challenges. This study aims to assess the development of scientific literature on Indonesian palm oil competitiveness and its relationship with global agricultural trade dynamics. The study was conducted using bibliometric analysis of 648 scientific articles obtained from Google Scholar and Scopus using the keyword "palm oil competitiveness". The articles were published in the time span from 1992 to 2025 for documents sourced from Google Scholar and the time span from 1985 to 2025 for documents sourced from Scopus. The data was analysed using Bibliometrix (R) and VOSviewer software to identify publication trends, main keywords, and interconnections between topics in the literature. The results showed a significant increase in the number of publications in the last decade, signalling high attention to the issue of palm oil competitiveness. Keywords such as “competitiveness”, “export performance”, “market share”, and “sustainable development” were central in the literature network, illustrating the important role of economic, policy, and sustainability aspects in strengthening Indonesia's palm oil position in the global market. The findings showed that palm oil competitiveness did not only depend on production efficiency, but also required downstream policy support, capacity building of farmers, and strengthening of trade diplomacy. This research was expected to serve as a reference for academics and policymakers in formulating a sustainable, equitable palm oil development strategy that was able to adaptively respond to global trade challenges.
