Abstract

This article aims to explore the issue of heretical deviations in the Al-Zaytun Islamic boarding school constructed by four online media sources: metro.suara.com, bandung.viva.co.id, rejabar.republik.co.id, and merdeka.com which had intensely reported on this controversy for weeks. It is intended to reveal what actually occurred in the institution and analyze how these media framed the issue critically. This study uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model through three levels of analysis: critical language analysis, subjective interpretation of the discourse practices, and relevant information on the media's sociocultural practices. This research found that the media's claim that al-Zaytun Islamic boarding school engaged in radicalism is a construction of pseudo-reality. The text narrative is unclear, and the news facts are blurred, containing bias and prone to debates. The findings reveal that the actual reality constructed by the four online media is the contestation of elite groups over the discourse on heretical teachings against Al-Zaytun Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study delves into the intricate interplay of humour, psycholinguistics, morphology, themes, rema, and language intelligence in the Indonesian language context. Employing a detailed analysis of seven humorous texts, the research dissects linguistic constructs that emphasize abrupt contextual shifts and cognitive disruptions as the core of Indonesian humour. By investigating the strategic use of themes and rhema, this study reveals how humour often arises from semantic illusions, morphological play, and phonological ambiguity that challenge the reader’s expectations. Through a psycholinguistic lens, it highlights the cognitive processes involved in humour comprehension, demonstrating the pivotal role of language intelligence in detecting and appreciating linguistic incongruities. Additionally, the study connects these humorous strategies to broader Islamic cultural values, such as adab (etiquette), ikhlas (sincerity), hikmah (wisdom), and amanah (moral responsibility), showing how humour reflects ethical communication embedded within Islamic civilisation. The research concludes that humour in Indonesian is a linguistic phenomenon and a reflection of cultural and spiritual intelligence, emphasising how language structure and religious values converge in crafting and appreciating comedic expression

Abstract

This study explores the religious and cultural significance of pilgrimage practices among the Berbah people at the Kanjeng Panembahan Purboyo Cemetery in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It aims to examine how pilgrimage practices continue to be observed in contemporary Yogyakarta despite the city's increasing modernization. Limited scholarly attention has been paid to understanding the significance of the continued practice of grave pilgrimage in this country, so this research attempts to capture the lived experiences of local communities using a descriptive qualitative case study approach. The data were collected through participant observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, allowing for a rich contextual understanding of the phenomenon. This study found that pilgrimage to the cemetery has a deep spiritual meaning for the Berbah people, manifested in three main dimensions: (1) achieving peace of mind through sacred relationships, (2) becoming more aware of human death and impermanence, and (3) clarifying and strengthening one’s purpose in life. These aspects contribute to a higher sense of direction and serenity in the lives of pilgrims, as they believe that pilgrimage invites divine blessings that guide them towards a more meaningful and focused existence.

Abstract

This research will discuss the dynamics of women's involvement in Saudi Arabian football and its influence on the culture of conservatism in that state. Saudi Arabia is known as a conservative state and tends to discriminate against women. However, in recent years, Saudi Arabia has begun to take an open and moderate stance, including in sports. This research is interesting to discuss because football, the most popular sport in Saudi Arabia, is a channel for creating a cultural transformation from conservative to moderate. This research aims to explain Saudi Arabia's efforts to change conservatism that has been rooted for a long time, through the involvement of women in football. This is descriptive qualitative research using library research methods and the approach refers to constructivism. The results of the research show that the role of Prince Muhammad bin Salman through Saudi Vision 2030 can change Saudi Arabia's culture of conservatism into a culture of moderation by relaxing existing norms such as allowing women to watch football matches in stadiums, establishing competitions and women's national team, being able to accommodate Saudi women to get involved in football and express their interests and talents after previously being restricted by the rules created by Wahhabism.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of tarekat (Sufi orders) on the religious culture of Nyatnyono Village, a rural community in Semarang Regency known for its rich Islamic traditions and emerging religious tourism. The village is home to several tarekat, including Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TQN), Naqsyabandiyah, Syattariyah, and Syadziliyah, all of which are intricately woven into the community's social and spiritual fabric. Insights gathered from interviews with local followers reveal that tarekat practices cultivate personal piety through spiritual guidance while fostering social solidarity and ethical behaviour. Under the mentorship of murshids (spiritual leaders), followers participate in dhikr, wirid, fasting, and communal gatherings, activities that facilitate spiritual development and strengthen communal relations. The findings indicate that tarekat practices play a vital role in shaping the cohesive religious culture of Nyatnyono Village, enhancing its resilience in times of crisis, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research underscores the enduring significance of Sufism in Indonesia’s rural Muslim communities, particularly in its capacity to integrate religious tourism with spiritual and social unity.

Abstract

Islamic civilization in the Middle Ages, the period of cultural, economic, and scientific development called the "Golden Age of Islam", has been a real source of pride for the Muslim world. As a high and dominant civil society, medieval Islamic civilization has now gone through the process of integration, where different cultures and minorities have merged into a single society with the condition that each of them preserves their own roots and creates a unique environment of coexistence. Several factors shaped coexistence in Islamic civilization. The first factor is the emergence of the Islamic religion in the 7th century. The second factor is the multitude of economic ties between the countries included in the Islamic world. Muslims understood that the basis of the economy was trade. The spread of Islam from the Middle East to China, from North Africa to the centres of Europe, developed trade. In the Middle Ages, Azerbaijan became one of the leading countries where trade developed due to its location at the crossroads of trade routes from East to West, which became important for the Caliphate. Thus, the multicultural environment created by the Arab Caliphate created a foundation for the development of trade in Azerbaijan, making this country an important point for the coexistence and welfare of peoples. The article studies the trade relations of Azerbaijan during the Middle Ages, the impact of the multicultural environment on trade, and the development of trade within the framework of the economic relations established with other countries. As for the research methods used in the study, a number of factors that play a key role in the economic development of Azerbaijan have been studied by preserving the principle of historicity, a comparative analysis of trade relations through historical-excursion.
