Abstract

This study delves into the synergy of Islam and local culture, particularly the "sambelien" tradition observed by the Malangsari community. This tradition serves as a poignant expression of welcome for Eid al-Fitr, encapsulating profound social Sufism values. Rooted in the community's collective aspiration for forgiveness and joy during this significant Islamic celebration, sambelien yields substantial social benefits. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological orientation, the researcher conducted a thorough investigation, gathering primary and secondary data. The study draws upon Berger & Luckman's social construction theory, encompassing subjective reality, symbolic reality, and objective reality, as well as the processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization. The article aims to unravel the core values embedded within the sambelien tradition through descriptive exploratory analysis. The findings illuminate the tradition as a cherished practice among rural communities in the Malangsari region, where joint prayers in mosques or langgar symbolize communal celebration. The act of seeking forgiveness from Allah SWT, following the fasting period of Ramadan, underscores the spiritual significance of this tradition. The local community acknowledges the presence of Sufism and social values, viewing the tradition as a reflection of maintaining habl min Allah (connection with God) and habl min al-Nass (connection with others). The values inherent in this tradition align with the realms of insaniyah (humanitarian) and Ilahiyah (divine). By shedding light on the intricate interplay between Islam and local customs, particularly within the context of the sambelien tradition, this study enriches our understanding of the cultural tapestry that defines communities in the Malangsari area and beyond.

Abstract

This research presents a reinterpretation of the Lawang Bledheg ornamentation found in the Great Mosque of Demak, Central Java, Indonesia. The study explores the profound connections between architectural ornamentation and the message conveyed in the referenced Quranic verses through an interdisciplinary approach combining aesthetic and symbolic analysis. By conducting on-site observations, examining historical records, and analyzing Islamic artistic conventions, the research unveils the symbolic meanings embedded within the Lawang Bledheg ornaments. The findings demonstrate that the ornaments represent a fusion of local Javanese artistic traditions and Islamic influences, creating a unique cultural synthesis. The research also highlights the symbolism of unity, tolerance, and religious harmony depicted through the motifs, patterns, and decorative elements of the Lawang Bledheg ornament. These symbols resonate with the themes present in Surah Ali Imran verses 133-136, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the Great Mosque of Demak as a sacred space. By shedding light on the aesthetic and symbolic aspects of the Lawang Bledheg ornamentation, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the mosque's cultural significance, encourages interfaith dialogue, and inspires contemporary architectural designs. The findings enrich art history, architecture, and religious studies, offering valuable insights into the intricate relationship between art, spirituality, and cultural heritage.

Abstract

Tolerance, proclaimed by UNESCO around two decades ago, has almost succeeded in becoming a culture lived by the world community. The culture of war as conflict resolution has changed into a culture of peace through tolerance. However, philosophically, this discourse is flawed and paradoxical in many points. Is this flawed concept worthy of being a cultural value imposed on humanity? Here, the author wants to explore an alternative source of the value of tolerance from a significant figure in Islam named Rumi. Maulana Muhammad Jalāl al-Din Rumi is a great poet in Islamic history. Through the beautiful poetry, he taught humans a mystical journey towards God and then lived peacefully in harmony with diversity and difference. For him, a peaceful life must begin with recognizing God. By remembering God, a person will undoubtedly know humans and their characteristics and how they should live in them. This article explores Rumi's concept of love, which teaches one to live peacefully amidst diversity and differences.

Abstract

This article aims to expose the labeling of “Desi” and “Muslims” as minority groups in a country where the majority of the population is from external groups. In the novel entitled Internment, it is found that the appearance of labels in the Internment affects the position of all characters. This study focuses on the causes that influence the emergence of the labels "Desi" and "Muslim" and how these labels are used for all characters in the novel Internment by Samira Ahmed. The data were collected through the documentation method or the observation method. The theory of language and Identity by Joanna Thornborrow is used as the main theory, while the theory of situation context by Bronislaw Malinowski is used as a supporting theory. These two theories are used to identify the types of labels and analyze the causes of labels appearing in the novel. This analysis indicates that negative labeling on utterances containing the labels "Desi" and "Muslim" becomes the most dominant label and often appears in every utterance. Also, utterances containing negative labels come from the internal group. It shows that sometimes the group is not confident in their identity when they are in a minority group in a country where the majority of the population comes from an external group.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked the production of corona-inspired Islamic music in Indonesia. Interestingly, against the backdrop of chaos and uncertainty, the genre appears to have transcended mere value-added entertainment and can be viewed as a tool that operates with or against power. Using Stuart Hall's concept of culture and power, this study aims to examine how popular culture such as this is utilized by the elites and the ordinary. This is qualitative research using content analysis, and the data were taken from the lyrics and live performances of Bimbo with their song “Corona” and Audul Marom rebana group with “Sirahku Mumet Sirahmu Piye.” This research found that corona-inspired Islamic music is not just an aesthetic call to surrender to God in the face of crisis. Instead, it acts as a vehicle for cultural adaptation by authorities and a platform for expressing dissent among the ordinary. Bimbo’s “Corona” and its involvement in the government-sponsored fundraising concerts exemplify efforts to mitigate public distrust during the pandemic. In contrast, the “Sirahku Mumet Sirahmu Piye” reproduced and popularized by a local rebana group from Demak echoes the plight of the lower classes, articulating the economic burden of the commoners due to COVID-19 measures.

Abstract

This research is rooted in a profound appreciation for the rich literary heritage of Arab society from the past, which we seek to revive in the present. The primary objective of this study is to delve into the values, messages, and ideologies conveyed by the novelist 'Alī Badr through his novels: 'Bābā Sārtir' (2001), 'Shitā'u al-'Āilah' (2002), and 'al-Walīmah al-'Āriyah' (2004), as these literary works engage in global discourse. This study applies two approaches: the international relations perspective as the foundation for fostering global interconnectedness and the media perspective, which evaluates the extent to which Arabic novels influence and shape the universal discourse of humanity. The analysis within the international relations framework, utilizing Michael Barnett's constructivist perspective, seeks to uncover the dynamics of social interactions and the nuanced dimensions of power. This examination aims to understand the implications of Arab novelists' engagement with their European counterparts. The analysis within the media approach, using Gill Branston and Roy Stafford's globalization perspective, aims to capture global media narratives that encapsulate their evaluation of the presence and impact of 'Ali Badr's novels. This research concludes that the involvement of 'Alī Badr and his works in the European literary landscape not only serves as a platform for the contestation of global ideas depicted in his novels but also garners widespread global acclaim, as evidenced by numerous awards.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the influence of modern historiography, namely the Annales school and colonial historiography, in the development of Indonesian Islamic historiography. In the traditional period, Indonesian Islamic historiographical themes were only oriented towards political history, the methodology used was not systematic, and the style of writing was descriptive-narrative. This article is a literature study using historical methods consisting of heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiographical stages. The primary sources used consist of several works of historians influenced by modern historiography. In addition, secondary sources are used in the form of books and scientific articles obtained through direct and digital searches. Furthermore, verification and interpretation of the sources found are carried out and presented in the form of descriptive-analytical articles. This research found that the Annales school and colonial historiography influenced Indonesian Islamic historiography. Its influence lies in the methodological aspects and the spread of global themes. This can be analyzed in the works of Hoesein Djajadiningrat, Sartono Kartodirdjo, and Azyumardi Azra. The education of these historians and the spread of ideas at the beginning of the 20th century became important factors in the internalization of modern historiographical values in Indonesian Islamic historiography. It was concluded that the influence of modern historiography on Indonesian Islamic historiography is the realization of total history writing.

Abstract

Like other traditional art forms, Kompangan in Jambi Seberang faces challenges in the preservation and transmission of culture due to globalization and changes in social patterns. Despite its cultural significance, research on the strategies used by local groups to maintain and promote this community is limited. The research gap includes the lack of detailed studies of the role of certain community groups, such as the Ulu Gedong, in preserving Kompangan and the mechanisms of cultural transmission within these groups. This research aims to fill these gaps by delving deeper into the history of Kompangan as a musical instrument and the roles of the Ulu Gendong Group in preserving the Kompangan as a traditional Malay art in Jambi Seberang. By using anthropological research, the results of this study indicate that Kompangan art is part of Malay Islamic culture and traditional musicals of Jambi Province, especially from Jambi Seberang. Immigrants from the Middle East have brought Kompangan. Sambilan Group was founded in Kampung Tengah, Jambi, and that is where Kompangan got its start. Kompangan art has evolved in several districts, including Ulu Gedong. Ulu Gedong, Riyatul Jannah, Riyatul Abedin, and Al-Hidayah are the four main Kompangan. The young generation plays a crucial role in preserving Kompang in Jambi Seberang. The goal for the next generation is to value their culture more and keep their cultural legacy alive, particularly this Kompangan art.

Abstract

The poison in Aceh (especially in Aceh Singkil) is called Aji. Aji is a mystical tradition aiming to achieve a certain spiritual level (maqam). There are some people referred to as Pekhaji (poison makers), whom the local people are wary of. And there are certain villages forbidden for foreigners because there is fear that the poison is added to food and drink. Even if a person is accused of being a Pekhaji or a village, it is considered forbidden, and no legal action is taken because it is based only on speculation. Aji as a spiritual practice is considered taboo; the Pekhaji's and forbidden villages are socially and economically marginalized. The forbidden villages and the Pekhaji are usually aimed at the poor and disadvantaged traditional village heads; the people accused as Pekhaji are poor people who do not get proper civil rights. This research examined rituals in the Aji tradition as part of social construction and analyzed religious studies by viewing social stratification in traditional villages and local rituals. The data in this research were collected through interviews and phenomenological field observations to explain all aspects of the Aji tradition in Aceh Singkil.

Abstract

This article begins with an academic discourse on tolerance campaign strategies as a new form of conflict resolution. This strategy focuses on how young people optimize social media to campaign for tolerance issues. The research used virtual ethnographic methods and online documentation to collect data. This step examined the landscape of religious conflicts in Indonesia, especially in Aceh province. What is the role of the Aceh government in resolving religious conflicts in Aceh? What is the form of young people’s active participation when voicing the issue of tolerance through LABPSA? The research results are that the presence of young people under the LABPSA institution is a new way to voice acts of tolerance and resolve religious conflicts in Aceh. They also criticize the Aceh government in response to the issue of intolerance. The presence of young people in LABPSA is also part of helping the Aceh government resolve conflicts in Aceh, especially religious conflicts, and eradicate intolerance issues.
