Abstract

This article aimed to find out the vocabulary mastery on food and drink by the 4th Grade students of Bunga Elementary School, Sidoarjo. This thesis uses quantitative research because it is focused on number and analyzing data. The thesis writer uses written test to gather the data from the 4th grade students of Bunga Elementary School, Sidoarjo. After conducting, the thesis writer takes the student’s test paper to analyze how far the students have mastered vocabulary of food and drink. The test consists of 36 Items, divided into three parts. Part 1 is pictures matching, part 2 is blanks filling, and part 3 is essay. Each part has 12 numbers of questions with pictures of food and drink. The thesis writer finds that there are 9 students participate on the test. There are 1 student who gets B+(11.11%), 2 students who get B (22.22%), 1 students who get C (11.11%), 4 students who get D (44.44%), and 1student who gets E (11.11%). It can be concluded that there are 4 students who pass the test and 5 students who fail in mastering vocabulary. He hopes that this thesis could be a guide for teachers and students to improve theirvocabulary.Keywords: vocabulary, mastery, ability

Abstract

Advertisement is a media communication which contains sign the most. In order to achieve the selling goals, companies will provide advertisement to introduce their product. In this matter, the thesis writer focuses on analyzing figurative language in advertisement. They are two objectives intended to be solved in this thesis, they are to describe types of figurative language and describe the meaning of figurative language in Maybelline cosmetics advertisement found in Pinterest. This study was conducted to analyze the uses of figurative language in Maybelline cosmetics of the catalogue online Pinterest. This study focuses on observing the words which contain figurative language by using Perrine’s theory. The method of this study uses descriptive qualitative because the researcher described the sentence that is categorized into figurative language. Whereas, data source were taken from advertisement catalogue online Pinterest which were publish on 2016 to 2018. The result of the data shows that there are eleven sentences which contain eight categorized figurative language and seventeen word that found in advertisement. The study found that there are eight kinds of figurative language which appeared in Maybelline advertisement such as: Personification, paradox, metaphor, apostrophe, symbol, allegory, hyperbole, and repetition. Keyword: Language, Figurative Language, Maybelline Advertisement

Abstract

Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God is a novel that reflects African-American social life in the early 20th century. This thesis examines the proofs of Janie Crawford alienation in every aspect of her life. In order to analyze the problem, the thesis uses a theory of alienation stated and applies qualitative method. Firstly, the thesis begins to read the novel and then collects the data. Then, this thesis carry on the process of analyzing the data collecting with the theory and making a conclusion at last. The findings of this thesis exhibits Janie Crawford's powerlessness and self-estrangement that can be seen through every events of her life with her familiarpeople. Keywords: Alienation, Powerlessness, Self-estrangement

Abstract

This research focuses on study of the forms of jargon and functions that used by foodandbeveragedivisionatTheAlimarPremierHotelSurabaya.The study writer uses the theory of sociolinguisticsby Chaer (1994) to answer the language varities in the form of jargon and also the theory of function of jargon by Ives (1999) that used by the employeesin the food and beverage division at The Alimar Premier Hotel Surabaya. This study uses qualitative method to analyze the jargon. The aim ofqualitativemethoditselfistoobtainsystematicallydescriptionandaccuratefacts. It concerns with the collected data that often uses words. To collect the data, the first step that the thesis writer used was recording some conversations between the employees in thesame division. After recording the conversations, the thesis writer transcribes the data into a table and classifies what are the inventions of the language varities in the form of jargon shich is found inthe conversation. After analyzing the data, the jargon that usually spoken by the employees in the food and beverage division are in the form words and phrases. Abstract

This research has main objectives to identify the Cockney and Received Pronunciation accents in My Fair Lady movie spoken by Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins. Also, the objective is to find the correlation between the accents and the social backgrounds of both speakers. The result of this research shows that the accents indeed can indicate Eliza and Higgins’ social backgrounds. There are several characteristics that can distinct the Cockney and Received Pronunciation, such as H-dropping, Th- fronting, Diphthong shifting, and G- dropping. Eliza and Henry Higgins speak different accents because they come from different regions in London. Besides, from their accents, it is shown that Eliza  with her strong Cockney accent comes from lower class while Henry Higgins with his Received Pronunciation accent comes  from upper class. Furthermore, the correlation between accents and social backgrounds is also analyzed in this research. Key Words: Accent, Cockney, Received Pronunciation

Abstract

Psychopathy is one of the dangerous mental disorder. The thesis writer focuses her thesis on the analysis of psychopathy in literary work, movie script written by David Leslie Johnson entitled Orphan in 2009.The thesis writer focuses her analysis on the proofs of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan movie script, the causes of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson Orphan movie script , and the effects of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan movie script on herself, Max, and Kate. The objectives of the study is; to find out the  proofs of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan movie script, to find out the causes of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan movie script, and to find out the effects of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan movie script. The thesis writer also applies qualitative research as well. The result of this study is there are four proofs of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan movie script, they are; Pathiological lying, Lack of remorse and guilt, lack of empathy, and manipulative. The thesis writer also analysis the causes of Esther’s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson’s Orphan move script. There are three causes of Esther’s psychopathy, they are; physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional or psychological abuse. In addition, the effects of Esther’s psychopathy. Abstract

Study entitled "Code Mixing Used by English Literature Students of the Seventh Semester in Dr. Soetomo University" is a sosoiolinguistic study. The selection of objects is based on the environment of Indonesian and English bilingual languages in a circle of seventh semester English literature students at Universitas Dr. Soetomo. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative method. This study aims to determine the type of Code Mixing and the reasons of using code mixing by employing Hoffman's theory. Finally, it was revealed in the findings that the most dominant type of code mixing were Used by English Literature Students of the Seventh Semester In Dr. Soetomo University is Intra-Sentential Code-mixing in the form of phrases. Meanwhile, the dominant intra-lexical code mixing found is verb. As a whole, code mixing is found in the form of inserting English codes into Indonesian utterances. Involving changes to pronunciation only shows four data. This research also reveals the most dominant reasons for using code mixing among seventh semester students is to express group identity. Keywords: Sociolinguistic, Bilingual and Code-Mixing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Dewi Ayu’s Electra Complex as Seen in Eka Kurniawan’s Beauty Is A Wound. The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out the proofs of Dewi Ayu’s Electra Complex as Seen in Eka Kurniawan’s Beauty Is A Wound; (2) to find out the causal factors of Dewi Ayu’s Electra Complex as Seen in Eka Kurniawan’s Beauty Is A Wound; and (3) to find out the effects of Dewi Ayu’s Electra Complex on herself and on Ma Gedik as Seen in Eka Kurniawan’s Beauty Is A Wound.  The theory used by the thesis writer is the theory of Electra Complex by Freudian theories in psychoanalysis approach and she also applies a qualitative research. Keywords: Psychoanalysis, Electra complex, Defence Mechanism.

Abstract

One of the companies that is known world-wide for its car products and campaigns is Subaru, a Japanese brand of multifaceted transport equipment. There are two objectives intended to be solved in this thesis, they are to find the meaning and to find the role of icon and symbol in the ads picture of Subaru car in automotive magazine. The thesis writer applies qualitative research as her research design to analyze the sign in the ads. It is intended to the thesis writer to be able to gather information about meaning from social perspective. The study of this thesis will started by finding the meaning of icon and symbol by using triadic process, which is a semiosis theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. Finding out the symbol and icon meaning through represantamen and interpretant in triangle figure. After finding out the meaning behind the icon and symbol, the thesis writer will be able to describe the role of icon and symbol in Subaru car ads pictures. It is concluded that even from one company, the icon and symbol used somehow serves different vibes to each product. But characteristics of the company brand are not left behind. The meaning behind icon and symbol mostly shows that the Subaru car is suitable for every weather, tracks, well-known for its safety and has sustainable machinery. The role of icon and symbol in the ads itself combined to support the quality of the product.  Key Words: Icon, Symbol, Representamen.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Passionate Love in Pablo Neruda’s Poems Drunk as Drunk, Your Feet, and Your Hands. The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out the elements of passionate love in Pablo Neruda’s poems Drunk as Drunk, Your Feet, and Your Hands; and (2) to find out the factors contributing passionate love in Pablo Neruda’s poems Drunk as Drunk, Your Feet, and Your Hands. The theory used by the thesis writer is the theory of Passionate Love by Psychologist Elaine Hatfield and she also applies a qualitative research. Key words: Love, Passionate Love, Intense Feelings, Sexual Attraction.
