Abstract

The lady beetle, Menochilus sexmaculatus is one of the biological control agents that can be used to control aphids. Presently, there is a lack of information about the effectiveness of this beetle to control aphids. The objective of this research was to study the functional response of M. sexmaculatus on Aphis gossypii at different ages of plants. All preys were exposed to one M. sexmaculatus adult for an hour at five different densities of aphids (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 individuals) is four different ages of chilli plants (2,4,6, and 8 weeks). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and logistic regression to determine the type of functional response. The results showed that the ability of M. sexmaculatus to prey was not significant at 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 weeks old chilli plants. At 2 week old chilli plants M. sexmaculatus showed type I of functional response, while at 4, 6 and 8 weeks the functional response were type III.

Abstract

The egg parasitoid, Scelio pembertoni Timberlake (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), is an obligate endoparasitoid of Acrididae. One of the hosts of S. pembertoni is the eggs of Oxya japonica (Thunberg)(Orthoptera: Acrididae). The objectives of this research were to determine the development stage of S. pembertoni, longevity and fecundity, and the preference of S. pembertoni against different host age. S. pembertoni were collected from O. japonica eggs taken from cultivated and wild taro fields in Bogor area. The life cycle of S. pembertoni consisted of egg stage, first and second instar larval stage, pre-pupal and pupal stage, and adult stage. The first instar larva was teleaform and transparent white. The second instar larva was hymenopteriform and transparent white. The immature stage of S. pembertoni lasted within 27–33 days under laboratory condition, and was consisted of egg development period, first instar stage, second instar stage, pre-pupal stage, and pupal stage was 1.8, 4.95, 4.25, 5.40, and 12.85, respectively. Longevity of the adult females was 7–17 days, and longevity of the male adults was 3–11 days. The average fecundity of the females was 29.53 eggs. The sex ratio (male to female) of S. pembertoni during observation in the laboratory was 1 : 3.19.  The parasitisation level and the number of offsprings produced by S. pembertoni was higher on younger host eggs than the older ones.

Abstract

Abundance of Aedes spp. in Semarang, Purwokerto and Yogyakarta. In Indonesia, Dengue Fever has a high morbidity rate. Incidence Rate (IR) during 39 years (1968-2007) showed a tendency to increase 00-30 per 100,000 populations, but the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) shows a decrease trend from 40% to 1.6%. Method of mosquito control that is mostly done today is chemical control methods. Unfortunately, this method is not always. A survey to find out the composition of the Aedes mosquito species in the field needs to as the first step to improve the method of vector control. This study employed a descriptive survey method, be done, taking eggs and adult mosquitoes from the three cities. From each city. Eggs and adult mosquitoes of Aedes spp from 90 ovitraps and 18 field locations were taken. Eggs obtained from Semarang, Purwokerto and Yogyakarta are 1835, 833, 1345, from 27 (30%), 22 (24,44%) and 25 (27,7%) ovitraps respectively, consisting of species A. aegypti and A. albopictus. A. aegypti and A. albopictus adults obtained in Semarang 17 (5%) and 323 (95%), in Purwokerto 6 (7%) and 81 (93%), while in Yogyakarta, 36 (25%) and 105 (75%) respectively. Research results show that in three cities A albopictus was more abundant than the A. aegypti.

Abstract

Abstract

Larvae of Hermetia illucens fly (Linnaeus) is an important source of alternative protein and can be used as pellets for feeds. Currently the production of H. illucens larvae is still limited because its rearing depends on palm kernel meal. The objective of the research is to explore alternative media for rearing, i.e. using loading ramp waste from crude palm oil factory. The study was conducted using physical-chemical analysis of the media. Evaluation of potential rearing media of loading ramp was done by studying the suitability of loading ramp fermented by EM4®, rumen microbes, and organic liquid fertilizer and without fermentation. Treatment media was develop with an enrichment ratio of 1 : 0.25, 1 : 05, and 1 : 1 (v/v) for bran and husk, and 1.25, 2.5, and 5% (w/w) for coconut sugar. Each experiment was arranged in complete randomized design using 20 larva of the 2nd instar. Larvas were incubated in plastic with tube with diameter of 10 cm and 20 cm in height containing of media 300 g. Response differences in growth and mortality were analyzed by ANOVA and least significant differences test at 0.05 levels. Preference and analysis suitability of the media were conducted using material enrichment. Results show that the loading ramp waste contain 9.80% protein and 10.32% fat. Although the media are could support growth and development of the larvae at different degree, media from waste fermentation POC loading ramp with bran enrichment 1 : 0.5 (v/v) is the best media for rearing larva.

Abstract

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is an important horticulture pest and is know to be a vector of Geminivirus. Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus (PYLCIV) is caused by Geminivirus, know to be transmitted by B. tabaci. It became an important disease in pepper and could cause 100% yield loss. Currently there is limited information concerning the genetic of B. tabaci associated with Geminivirus in Indonesia. It is therefore important to investigate the genetic identity of B. tabaci across different population. The aim of this research was to investigate the genetic identity of B. tabaci that were collected from pepper yellow leaf curl endemic area in the western part of Indonesia. Research activities include 1) sample collection of B. tabaci from pepper yellow leaf curl endemic area in west Indonesia; 2) single extraction of B. tabaci total DNA; 3) amplification of mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I gene (mtCOI) fragmen with polymerase chain reaction (PCR); 4) mtCOI sekuencing 5) phylogenetic analysis of mtCOI fragmens from west Indonesian PYLCIV compared with some B. tabaci mtCOI deposited in National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Based on mtCOI fragment analysis, B. tabaci from PYLCIV endemic area were in one group belong to Asia I clusters. Genetic identity of B. tabaci from endemic area in Western Part of Indonesia were similar with polyatomic cladogram.

Abstract

Trichogrammatoidea armigera and Trichogramma japonicum are polyphagous egg parastioids, that are important as natural enemies. The objective of this research was to study the effect of host deprivation on reproductive capacity of T. armigera and T. japonicum. This study consists of 8 treatments, host deprivation : 0 hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 48 hours. Host were replaced every 24 hours. Results showed there are difference with respect of how the two parasitoids respond to the treatment. Deprivation of host for 3 hours in T. armigera resulted in the increase of egg production and parasitism rate. After 12 and 24 hours of not encountering any hosts, the numbers of eggs produced drastically decreased. Treatment on T. japonicum resulted in the reaction of fecundity and parasitism rate overall. Forty eight hours of host deprivation resulted in death of both parasitoids species within 2 days. None of the parasitoids seems to produce any egg.

Abstract

Oviposition Deterrence of Bean Weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis L.(Coleoptera: Bruchidae) Treated with Ten Plant Extracts. Pest and Diseases attack agricultural products not only in the field but also in storehouse. Their attack causes decreasing both quantity and quality of stored materials. One of important stored product insect pests is Callosobruchus chinensis L. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Till now the effective strategy to control this insect pest is chemical control by using synthetic insecticides. The improper use synthetic insecticides causes some undesirable effects, so alternative strategist should be searched to controls insect pests in storehouse. One of the alternatives is by using plant materials as insect pests control agent. The aim of this study was to find out the oviposition deterrence of C. chinensis treated with ten plant which were extracted with methanol, hexane and ether. Oviposition deterrence was evaluated by choice and no-choice methods at 1,3 and 5% of extract concentration. Extract of Acorus calamus (methanol), A.calamus (hexane), A. calamus (ether), Illicium verum (ether), Pogostemon calbin (hexane), P. cablin (ether), Vetiveria zizanioides (hexane), and V. zizanioides (ether) were able to deter ovipostion activity of C. chinensis by more than 90% of deterrence. Further study should be conducted to isolate and identify the active compound and to make botanical insecticide formulation for practical use as a commercial product.
