The Glass Menagerie, a play written by Tennessee Williams, is full of symbols in which some of them refer to the sexual perversion in the character of the play such as Laura Wingfield. The research applied library research by taking data from the script of the play, then analysed based on the two theories, those were the theory of symbol and psychological theory called sexual perversions. The symbols in this play was analyzed, especially those related to Laura Wingfield. There were symbols like the glass collection, glass unicorn, blue roses, fire escape and Jim O’Connor which explained the sexual perversion of Laura Wingfield. These symbols were clues to understand the psycological problems suffered by Laura. It can be concluded that The cause of the strange sexual desire is because of her being abnormal because she is crippled and suffers from pleurosis.

Typography is one of the main components of a visual communication design work as a means to convey the message to its target audiences. In delivering the information, typography stabilizes visual and verbal aspect of the overall design. The understanding of the messages (including its related aspects, such as: product knowledge, target audience’s profile, media planning, etc) is the most important thing that will help define the combination of typeface needed. This study was conducted by observation, information gathering, and typography design study of several examples. Furthermore, the understanding of typography was linked on how to choose the right typography for visual design. Result showed that the combination should have a good balance of ‘legibility’ and ‘readability’. As a conclusion, a good typography design will deliver such perception, as well as express desired impression, in a visual communication design work.

Integration of many fields of human endeavor including art and design into academic system is not at all surprising in our modern world that continues to modernize itself in the quest for ever increasing welfare of humanity. The backbone of modern welfare is unmistakably techno-scientific academic research, explaining current expansion of its ‘standardized’ paradigm, regulation and infrastructure without exception into the field of art and design. This is where the problem precisely arises, since their own nature, art and design as ‘creative’ fields, are incompatible with scientific paradigm which emphasizes a uniform reproducibility of research findings. ‘The heart of the arts’, in contrast, is its singularities. The industry actually has recognized the difference by assigning ‘patents’ to technological invention and ‘copyright’ to singular artworks. The question is then how to incorporate such creatively plural fields into uniform academic research system. Fortunately within the past 20 years, there were developments within international art and design academia that came up with a keystone principle called practice-based research. It relies upon philosophical underpinnings of phenomenology and hermeneutics which has been critically acclaimed in showing inadequacies of positivistic (natural science-based) paradigm in understanding cultural phenomena exemplified by art and design. It is the intention of this article to briefly explain this new principle and its philosophical underpinnings in order to let us appreciate its positive contribution for our understanding of art and design. This understanding in turn would allow us to cultivate those creative fields within academic context in a more appropriate way.

Chinese characters are symbols of written notation system. It is the carrier of heritage and development of Chinese cultural. Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is a new discipline that has rapidly developed, but Chinese characters are difficult to be taught and write. For bahasa Indonesia doesn't have any relation with Mandarin, it is easy to make mistake in learning Mandarin. When Indonesian students learned Chinese characters, they found that Chinese characters were one of the difficulties. Some of the students realized the importance of Chinese characters. They had learned every day, but the results were not ideal. Because some of the students did not learn very well in Chinese word, it affected their improvement in their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill, also it affected their interest in learning Chinese. Nevertheless, some students found that Chinese characters were very hard so it pushed them to try harder in learning Mandarin and this kind of effort made them get good result; hence, it actually had some psychology effect. Research was done onIndonesian born Chinese that study abroad. Data collection was gathered from student’s exercises, homeworks, and exams. The result of the research is that Indonesian born Chinese usually didn't follow the right stroke in when learning Chinese characters.

The term aesthetic has always become part of design. Without aesthetic, design has just a functional object. Aesthetic in design, particularly in interior design, has been influenced by many factors, which are aesthetic value, aesthetic perception, and time frame. Aesthetic has subjective meaning related to time frame and objective meaning related to implementation of element and principles of design on aesthetic term. Aesthetic perception is how we judge and see the object using our own thinking and value. Time frame is where and when the aesthetic value happens. Interior design trend right now has been influenced by technology in many ways so the concept of modern design theme is always the best choice for designer. However, using modern theme as a design concept has to be implemented as a whole theme and related to aesthetical value so that the design will gain much appreciation from others. This paper used deductive method to explain the theory of aesthetic and the implementation of aesthetic value in interior design context. Design should speak louder than it looked.

The pattern of interaction between the teacher and the students will determine the students’ uptake (i.e. the students’ incorporating correction into an utterance of their own). This paper examines the type of teacher-student interaction which will likely trigger the students’ uptake. The data was taken from the recordings of 10 non-native English lessons at university level and different types of subjects (literature, grammar, discourse, semantics, and classroom management). 500 minutes of lessons were transcribed and 50 focus on form episodes were chosen to be analyzed. The study revealed that the dominant type of interaction was reactive focus on form which was followed by metalinguistic feedback.
