Abstract

Critical realism is a current in philosophy of social science, which emerged in the 1970s in the United Kingdom as a reaction toward two other currents in philosophy of science that in the past dominated the natural sciences: positivism and idealism. In the 1980s the scope of critical realism was extended to include the social sciences. Critical realism claims to present a new view and better understanding of the practice of social research compared to those currently in sway. The philosophy of science presented by critical realism is quite complicated, but important enough to be given serious attention. The purpose of this article is to discuss a number of topics which crucial for the proper understanding of the current of philosophy of science as well as its implications for the practice of research in the social science.

Abstract

With more than 5 millions members, Bobotoh Persatuan Sepak Bola Indonesia Bandung (Persib) seems to be the greatest football fandom in Indonesia. This paper draws the dynamics of Bobotoh Persib from the 1990s to the 2000s focusing on the identity construction in the digital era. This paper argues that Bobotoh Persib does not only provide opportunity to construct a collective identity rooted to the place (i.e. Bandung), but also ethnicity (i.e. being sundanese). Results show that the digital era provides a greater space for Bobotoh Persib to (re)negotiate who they are. Here, Bobotoh Persib (re)construct a project identity representing the local sundanese, the migrants in Bandung and the Persib fandom in general, who are connected with the global society.

Abstract

Amids the world’s attention to Indonesia, a question is raised: “will the world’s largest Muslims country be able to show Islamic capabilities with democracy?” Ironically, intolerance based on religious spirits with their violent face has continued to increase. Democratic structure formulated after the demised of the New Order regime in 1998 is now facing a new challenge from the rise of theocracy that opposed democracy, pluralism, and multiculturalism. The rise of theocracy is essentially inconsistent with the “Unity in Diversity” principle. Religious politics struggling to institutionalized this theocracy model has become “the sand in the shoe” in the mids of Indonesia’s celebration of multiculralism and pluralism embracing deliberative democracy. Obstacles to democratic reconciliation occured not only due to disfunction of democratic institutions that concentrate much on democratic procedure instead of substantive democracy; but also has been distorted by these theocracy ideals that continues to emerge. The jargon to uphold Islam as a whole (“kaffah”) stated religious views is un-negotiable, although this is actually in contrast with the Islamic principle, “shalih likulli zaman wa makan” (meaning: religious universality applies accross time and space). The effort to textualized with interpretation, can easily fall into the use of violence has given a negative contribution to the building of democracy. Pancasila as nation’s concensus, a conditio sine quanon, for pluralistic and multiculture Indonesia, has now continued being disputed. Keywords: Islam, multiculturalism, democracy

Abstract

Prison (restraint) is a room derived from the society’s interpretation and experience in order to rehabilitate, remedy, retribution, normalize, and social reintegration. This is a practical explanation of the concept of justice and democracy. The available room is export room. The delegated room to the number of authoritative subjects represents the entire communities to rehabilitate the deviate person from expectations and in order to normalize the morality. It is likely to say not only that those who under control are those whose no place in social area, but also that the authorities in this project may feel fettered due to becoming the thrown-people attendant directly. "Rooming" means self-isolation and restriction from the general forms of social service, while, for either prisoner or student at traditional Muslim school, it means to survive in any such a room it is, including having to create the imaginary rooms.

Abstract

My goals in writing this paper are, the first, to analyze and understand the methodology the Muslim feminists apply in their project of reinterpretation of the Quran. I will discuss their understanding of text and contexts, textual and contextual methods of interpretation. I will elaborate of how their method of contextual interpretation reflects their ideological perspective of feminism as a counter-patriarchal culture. I will see how the method of contextualization is in fact another literal approach since this method cannot escape from the important position of text. The second is to examine the impacts of the project in transforming public knowledge and awareness as a sign of ideological change. One of the key objectives of the project is to provide and to comprehend how public response and observe transformation influenced by this project. I will observe in what aspects and levels the project contributes to the ideological transformation from “patriarchy” to gender equal ideology. Keywords : feminist interpretation, interpretation of Quran, patriarchy.
