Abstract

This article is a brief account on the introduction and development of the concept of social exclusion in the intellectual discourse and national policy, primarily in the western countries. The concept, which is multidimensional in nature, is a new paradigm that seeks to explain deprivation and poverty in the light of asymmetric relations between the exclusive groups who command a variety of resources and the ones who are made disadvantageous. The concept, first introduced in France in 1974 to explain the erosion of solidarity among the French society, has sinced been adopted in many western countries and developing countries alike, to explain the causes social discontents of the excluded. Despite its relatively successful application as policy guidelines to minimize deprivation in many European countries, the concept has not yet been widely known in Indonesia. While, many forms of social exclusion have been part of social and cultural life in the archipelago since the historical past, in fact, the concept of social exclusion as a scientific approach has not been instrumental in explaining factors leading to the disadvantages and impoverishment of the deprivative groups. While another concept, social capital, has entered intellectual discourse since many years and has been used by many international assistance agencies as an approach in their development programs and projects, only a limited number of scientific papers on social exclusion have been found to address this issue. Keywords: Social exclusion, paradigm, deprivation, poverty, social capital

Abstract

Recently, we are witnessing the vast expansion of the use of social methods in law research. The so-called socio-legal research is one way of using scientific methodologies in social science disciplines (such as sociology, anthropology, economics, language) to find answers for legal problems. In this paper I would like to unfold how these methods influence the legal reasoning in legal research, to what extent they can be used or even to be misused. Law, is a specific subject, in which law text are authoritative in nature, which makes it having its own particularities that differs it from other texts. As an authoritative text, approach to law is narrowed as it supposed to maintain the certainty of the law itself. However, legal problems do not always concern with merely legal text, it also touches many aspects of the societies, which for this part, law needs approaches from other social sciences methods. In this writing, legal research methods are differentiated based on the user of the information it will provide. Keywords: legal research, socio-legal studies, interdisciplinary studies

Abstract

Despite the abundance of social conflict research, those focusing on women issues are actually quite rare. This writing is based on a research using women’s research method to unfold the role of women in conflicted areas in the city of Poso, Maluku and Atambua. Focusing on women, and integrating it with the research method that was used, it appeared that women has played a significant role in resolving social conflict in the community. Women also played an important role in preventing sexual abused cases and other impacts of social conflict. This research served as a preliminary data for Resolution 1325 dissemination, which emphasized the special attention to women and children in any occurrence of social conflict. The main conclusion of this research is that women’s knowledge needs to be elaborated; therefore greater public can understand the significant role of women in conflict areas. Although concurrently becomes victims at most conflict occurrence, women also has significant role in resolving conflict at community level. Abstract

Even though the term ’elite’ is often used by the Indonesian researchers, but it is rather difficult to find a particular study that focuses on the Indonesian elite(s). We could find some historical writings concerning Indonesian elite of the 20th century, but not contemporary studies on the Indonesian elite(s), particularly those using anthropological approaches. This paper discusses the methodological problems which are faced by the Indonesian researchers to conduct an anthropological study of elite. Keywords: elite, the category of elite, anthropological approach on elite, Indonesian elite(s), study of Indonesian elite.

Abstract

This article is a writing based on a research on tolerance and diversity in Tangerang City. The objectives of this writing is to describe social relations between groups with different ethnic and religious backgrounds by unfolding and reflecting boundaries of identity built by these groups. This writing argues that decentralization as a context, in which tolerance, ethnic identity and democratization has worked as a new arena for repositioning and redefintion the relations between groups at local level. The State (in this particular is the Local Government) is actually play a role as an agent that reconstructs the relations between ethnic and religious groups; and some of their “policies” has created social exclusion in public spaces. As the research unfold, Tangerang’s City vision to build “akhlaqul karimah” society (a society with pious religious attitudes), has contibuted to the shaping of social relations of the groups with different ethnic and religious backgrounds that shares living spaces in Tangerang, as the local government tries to “color” the city identity by expressing certain religious symbols in open public spaces. The result is a form of social exclusion, experienced and felt by ethnic (and religious) groups, which are the minority in political, economical and socio-cultural arena in Tangerang City. Keywords: social exclusion, Tangerang City vision, identity symbols in public spaces
