Abstract

In recent years, pesantren is often depicted as the breeding place for terrorism and radicalism. This image emerges due to the involvement of some pesantren alumnis in violent actions such as in the Bali bombing tragedy. This image brings negative impact to pesantren while in fact this institution is rich with the texts and pratices related to peace issues. Using library research, this article discusses this problem by looking at the texts which are often used in pesantren as well as the practises that have been examplified by their alumni in the peace building activities. This article then analyzes why recently pesantren’s role in peace building activities seem blunt so that their image related to violence emerges. This article argues that this problem occur due to the modelling traditions which is currently fading within pesantren. Moreover, it is found that there is little effort to contextualize the texts interpretation within pesantren community so that they face difficulties to respond the complexity of conflict and violent cases occur in the society. Abstract

Alor is a district in East Nusa Tenggara Province that often suffers from food shortage. Food insecurity experienced by farmer community is mainly related to two main factors, namely: geography condition and accessibility of people to food resources. Those situations have created low agricultural production, which have their close nexus with farmers’ income. As a consequent, they seek of getting financial assistance, whether from government or private sectors. Some factors that are contributing to farmers low income including land infertility, farmers possession of a small plot of land, the scarcity of productivity means such as: fertilizers, the weather condition (dry season) and natural disasters. Most importantly, the limited skills of farmers to make use by all resourcesavailable factors has also impacted to food insecurity. To overcome the current condition, any effort to establish food security mechanism through alleviation of poverty programs is recommended, for example, the revitalization of Alor local food. In the long run, any development of agricultural program in Alor Island must be carried out through intensification and extensification programs as well as accelerating aquacultural program and other alternative solutions. Strengthening the local “adat” organizations could also help farmers inparticular to cope with the food insecurity, and to solve related major issues that link closely with people basic needs. The data used to write this paper are based on research conducted on September and October 2009.Keywords: Food Security, Revitalization, and Local Food

Abstract

Indigenous people is an important issue in the post-Suharto Indonesian politics. In the struggle over state power and capital, the discourse is used by both human rights activists and indigenous communities as their agenda. The process is described as “adat revivalism”. However, the 'indigenous' term was actually created from a certain social and intellectual process; which shall not taken for granted. In this term, the discourses of indigenous peoples become complexand dynamic. Based on that perspective, this article observes how Kampung Naga traditional community in Tasikmalaya, West Java, deals with government policy on tourism. Through the process of resistance and negotiations, it created a consensus among the community of Kampung Naga and the government. Keywords: Indigenous peoples, revivalism, on tourism policy, Kampung Naga

Abstract

Demographically, Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world, yet international migration is a meager issues and only recently becoming a hot policy debates on the problem of migrant workers protection. The huge demand for domestic workers since the mid 1980s from the Gulf countries, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong, continue unabated, increasingly creates tensions between the state and the civil societies, as many migrant workers exposed to exploitation and human right abuses. The center of the tension lays on the wide discrepancy between the policy to bolster the overseas labor and the failure of the state in providing a proper regulation in which protection for migrant workers is secured. To understand the current problems of overseas labor policy in Indonesia is necessary to trace the relationship between migration and the state and the history of state policy on migration. Assessing the role of stakeholders in this migration industry is important in able to understand the apparently lack of grasp and continuously reactionary and ad hock nature of the policy and related regulations. The article aims to explain the role of wives in maintaining economic stability of fishermen family. The role of wives is not only limited in domestic domain, but also in the field of economic and social. For fishermen’s wives, gender bias which used to preserve the role of man and woman is not really dominant right now. In contrast, the wife has a greater and more dominant role in her family life. Furthermore, the wife is demanded to be more creative to cope with the fluctuative income of her husband. In consequence, it is not easy to be a wife of fisherman. There are three obligations should be done by the wife. Firstly, is the domestic duties; second, is being creative to assist the income of the husband; the last is participating in various social activities. Abstract

Coastal villages in eastern Indonesia have food diversity. Public consumption of staple food consisting of a mixture of rice and tubers, and bananas, which are cooked separately. Food habits indicates the diversity of food, has become a tradition and a part of the culture. This Food habits and food diversity in addition to support food security, also serves to keep the balance of nutrition. Food habits and food diversity owned coastal communities can be used as a model for the implementation of the diversification policy of food and nutrition balance for the community. Due to this movement launched by the government to diversify the food center has not shown tangible results, especially in Java, whereas in other parts of eastern Indonesia has a culture of food habits and food diversity practice is good. In that context variable ecosystems changes (ecological typology) and social typology is important to consider. While the conclusions obtained, the staple food habits mixture has reduced dependence on rice, and fish consumption and nutrient intake of protein is essential. Keywords: foodhabits, diversity of food, coastal community and food security.
