Abstract

The production of renewable energy from biowaste or liquid biowaste in anaerobic condition by the activity of methanogenic archeabacteria in the central role is known as biomethanation. However, at the high concentration of loading rate of the process, related with the sensitivity of methanogens to the environmental shift, such as pH, heavy metals, sulfide, and hydrogen partial pressure, as well as the need of the methanogens to the strict anaerobic conditions, the methane production often was disturbed, even failed. This is one problem in the biowaste and liquid biowaste conversion into methane. Study on the fermentation process of biowaste/liquid biowaste into hydrogen is an attractive solution on the solving of environmental pollution and the need of energy. The complexity of the hydrogen production is seemly less than that of biomethanation due to the needs of the active microorganisms in the processes.

Abstract

On the minimizing of organic solid waste coming to open dumping area, the municipal organic waste was used as substrate for anaerobic degradation and methane generation. Experiment either in the semi continuous bioreactor or in serum vials showed that the rate of organic substance conversion is low. The degradation rate is between 3550 % of organic material feed into bioreactor where pH is in optimum condition for methane generation. The overall limiting step of organic material biodegradation is the hydrolysis of organic fiber into soluble organic substance.

Abstract

The quality of platinum teak wood (Tectona grandis), which is developed by Indonesian Institute of Sciences(LIPI) through tissue culture method was observed in this study. The aims were to asses and evaluate the woodquality, i.e. physical and mechanical properties, and also to investigate the potential use as well as the challengeof this wood in the future compared to others wood, especially with the conventional ones. Two-year-old platinumteak wood was analyzed for physical properties, while five-year-old platinum weak was analyzed for physicaland mechanical properties. Both of these woods were planted in Cibinong, Bogor. Ten-year-old teak wood fromcommunity forest in Serpong, Tangerang and secondary data from various conventional teak woods from variousregions were used as comparisons. The results show that physical properties of 2-and 5-year-old platinum teakwood are better than 10 years teak wood from community forest. The basic densities of 2-and 5-year-old platinumteak wood are 0.50 and 0.53 g/cm3, respectively, while ten-year-old community forest teak wood is 0.42 g/cm3. Thedimensional stability of 5 years platinum teak wood is low and similar to ten-year-old community and progeny testteak wood, which the value of tangential and radial ratio (TR ratio) of this wood is 2.16. TR ratio of two-year-oldplatinum teak wood is ~1. The MOR of five-year-old platinum teak wood is 919.79 kg/cm2. This value is almostsimilar to 2030-year-old conventional teak wood from East Java. Almost all of wood qualities depend on age ofthe trees. Therefore, it is predicted that platinum teak wood has a good potency to be used for structural applicationsas well as for furniture.

Abstract

The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the effect of alloying elements, such as manganese, chromium, and boron, and also the effect of heat treatment into the hardness and microstructure of steel shot. Inthis experiment, a steel shot containing of 0.5?0.8% C was produced. The manufacture of steel shot was carried out by using the injection-pressurized water method. The raw materials, such as steel scrap and alloying elements were melted in an induction furnace. The round shape steel or steel shot with 0.5?3.2 mm in diameter was obtained by injecting the molten steel, which was fl owed from induction furnace into a distributor (pan crucible), by 1.1 atmosphere of pressurized water using a nozzle, and then the steel shot was splashed down into a tank containing water for cooling process. The dimension of pan crucible was in the form of cylinder tube with 300 mm in diameter and 130 mm in length, containing of 107 holes, with 10 mm in diameter for each hole. Some tests were conductedinto steel shot material, there were the hardness testing by using a Rockwell hardness tester, and the microstructure analysis by using an optical microscope. The addition of manganese, chromium, and boron into steel shot caused the hardness value of steel shot signifi cantly increased, 57 HRC for 3.6% Cr and 55 HRC for 2.3% Mn?1.8% Cr?2% B. The heat treatment process, by tempering at temperature 250oC for 5 minutes, produced fi nely martensite on its microstructure with 58 HRC (the hardness of as-manufactured steel shot was 55 HRC).

Abstract

A deep understanding in dynamical characteristics of braking systems is very important in designing an appropriate control system to be applied in a vehicle. This paper examines the braking system dynamics of a car using Quarter Vehicle Model (QVM). In order to facilitate the analysis, a linear model has been derived from a nonlinear QVM. The dynamical characteristics of braking are analyzed using state space equation and then explored through numerical simulation. The result is then compared with nonlinear Euler and 4th order Runge-Kutta methods. In the numerical simulation, the dynamic model is given some different braking inputs and different road conditions to notice the dynamical response of the model. This study learns that applying a sudden braking torque will cause the slip response to move to locked condition too fast. By reducing the input gradient by 48.6673%, 14.3875% improvement on longitudinal speed deceleration will be gained. Therefore, applying braking torque gradually will increase braking effectivity. Moreover, dry asphalt gives the best response compared to both dry concrete and wet asphalt because it gives 9.1940% more effective longitudinal speed deceleration.

Abstract

Kijiwo (Euchresta horsfi eldii (Lesch.) Benn.) is one of the Indonesia native species that had a habitat in montane forest. Propagation of Kijiwo through generative is very diffi cult to fi nd. The alternative conservation effort for Kijiwo is a shoot propagation. The aims of this study were to estimate the growth percentage of shoot propagation and to determine the effectiveness of artifi cial hormone for rooting on shoot propagation. The artifi cial hormone that be used were IAA, IBA, NAA, and Rootone F. Control treatment was also conducted as non treatment indicator. This study was conducted in the nursery of Cibodas Botanic Garden for 5 months. Randomized Complete Block Design with 2 blocks (potrays). Each potray contains 45 polytube for 45 shoot that can consist 5 artifi cial hormone treatments and each treatment were replicated into 9 shoots. Watering was done every 3 days and checking the root was done every month. Parameters of this study were root number, root length, wet weight of root, and dry weight of root. Data analyzed on R.2.12.2 software with two-way ANOVA. The result showed that growth percentage was 98,89%. The application on artifi cial hormone showed not signifi cant difference on parameters (P>0,05). Only block treatment on wet weight of root showed signifi cant different (P<0,05).

Abstract

Peat swamp forest is a unique and fragile ecosystem, with specific flora and fauna that play important roles in maintaining healthy natural conditions with high economic values. This habitat also has important role for equilibrium and maintenance of living environment such as water reservoir, carbon storage, climate change, and biodiversity. Utilization of peatland for agriculture, plantations, and other activities often lead not only to controversy, but also cause land and ecosystem degradation, including water resources availability. The objective of this research was to study comprehensive ecohydrology aspects in ex-mega rice project in Central Kalimantan in order to support sustainable agricultural practices and water resources management in peatland areas. The results of the study showed that the sustainability of agricultural systems in peatland was strongly influenced by ecological aspect. This aspect can be carried out from the condition of water management system, water color condition, and possible incidence of fires. The level of suitability for crops plantation was low (S3), with the limiting factors of pH, nutrient availability, and the risk of inundation. In this case, water gates should be installed to improve water management system. Water quality in this area was typical of peat water and do not meet the requirement for daily use for the local people.
