Abstract

Background: Educational institutions must promote the learning of professional behavior as early as possible and conduct evaluation of the implementation, including evaluation of the academic integrity implementation. This study aims to determine the academic integrity perception, behavior and intention of students and their relation to mental capacity and basic personality of students based on the MMPI-2 measurements.Method: This was a non-experimental, conducting quantitative survey involving 209 medical students from one of Faculty of Medicine in Indonesia. Results: The relationship between mental capacity and basic personality based on the measurement of MMPI-2 and the perceptions, attitude and intentions of academic integrity were found. On mental capacity, a correlation was found between potential performance and perceptions (r = 0.169 and p = 0.014) and academic integrity behavior (r = 0.170 and p = 0.014), between adaptability and perception of academic integrity of fellow students (r = 0.149 and p = 0.032), between psychological constraints and academic integrity behavior score (r = 0.137 and p = 0.049) and between moral integrity and perception score of academic integrity (r = - 0.220 and p = 0.001). On the basic personality, there was a correlation between openness to pressure and perceptions of academic integrity of fellow students (r = 0.141 and p = 0.041), as well as between basic personality and perception (r = 0.169 and p = 0.014) and academic integrity behavior (r = 0.154 and p = 0.026).Conclusion: There is a correlation in some variables of mental capacity and basic personality based on MMPI-2 to perception and academic integrity behavior.

Abstract

Background: Medical science program Faculty of Medicine Tanjungpura University implements a Competency-Based Curriculum or in Indonesian called as Kurikulum Berbasis Kompetensi (KBK), corresponded to the Kurikulum Inti Pendidikan Tinggi III (KIPDI III). The curriculum is applied since academic year of 2005/2006 and has been evaluated into Curriculum of 2013 (Kurikulum 2013). Learning environment is the manifestation of a curriculum, so that the assessment of the environment in the institution of medical program is a part of the implementation of the evaluation of the curriculum. DREEM questionnaire (Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure) is one of the tools that are appropriate to measure the learning environment. This research aims to assess the students’ perception of the learning environment on academic year of 2013/2014.Method: This research is a descriptive study with cross sectional design, conducted to measure the learning environment in students of medical science program. The DREEM questionnaire was used as the measurement tool. This research was conducted in November 2013 at Faculty of Medicine Tanjungpura University, Pontianak, West Borneo. Results: The total score of the DREEM obtained in this research is 14,55/200, which shows that students considered the learning environment, including lecturers, social environment, learning process, academic achievement, and learning atmosphere as positive environment. The students assumed that the environment could still be improved by optimizing the resources. Conclusion: The students inferred that the learning environment could still be improved by optimizing the existing resources as well as getting support by the faculty and university administrators itself.

Abstract

Background: Several elements of PBL have been identified and prepared with a questionnaire to be reused. Variables of PBL elements that influence students' learning decisions are assessed using a questionnaire of PBL elements that affect students’ learning decisions. This study is one part of a study reported in a different journal of medical education. The objective of this study was to validate a questionnaire of PBL elements that influence learning decisions of students in FKIK UMYMethods: A total of 584 students from major A, B, C, and D in FKIK UMY on the introductory tutorial groups with Indonesian as discussion language were invited to fill out a questionnaire. Construct validity was assessed by testing the validity of the items, Crönbach alpha, factor analysis, convergent and discriminate validity. Results: A total of 582 students of the major A, B, C, and D FKIK UMY on the tutorial groups with Indonesian as the language of instruction participated in the study (response rate 99.6%). Data showed that the questionnaire on PBL elements that affect student learning decisions have a high construct validity. Conclusion: The questionnaire of PBL elements that influence students’ learning decisions in Indonesian version is valid and can be reused. A deeper, further qualitative research on the other PBL elements can be conducted to improve the questionnaire.

Abstract

Background: Student peformance assessment during problem-based learning (PBL) discussion is still debatable. One of the assessments that applies adult learning principle is self-assessment  (SA). In fact, many medical schools prefer to use tutor assessment than SA because it is considered less accurate. Many studies have reported that the accuracy of SA is poor because of their own lack of knowledge and SA skills.  This literature review aims to explore deeper in SA and its basic principles in designing SA instrument for PBL discussion in medical school.Method: This study was conducted using narrative review method. Ten articles were reviewed. Five articles were chosen from google search engine and the other five from medical education textbooks. Results: SA is the ability of a student to observe, analyze and assess his own performance based on the criteria and he determines a way to fix it. SA skills that have been practiced during  PBL discussions will equip the students to become future health professionals who are competent in determining their own continuous professional development (CPD) programs. When designing a SA instrument, one needs to explore these five main issues, including acceptance, accuracy, power, feasibility and context. Conclusion: SA is the most effective assessment to assess a student’s achievement in PBL discussion if implemented properly. The completion of SA should be made in the normal context and one must explore the five main issues constantly so that SA can be done properly and well.

Abstract

Background: There are two important characteristics that need to be considered by the institution of medical education today, the first is about the importance of using assessment as a measuring instrument and the role of curriculum in producing good quality graduates. UKDI is only one exit to be a doctor that will certainly have varied impact on students from the expected and unexpected. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact on student learning UKDI on which will follow UKDI related to the allocation of time for study, the number of hours of study, the distribution of learning, the selection of learning resources and learning materials selection.Method: The research method is qualitative study that use Focus Group Discussion to get the data. The number of participants is 61 people devided into 6 groups. That group of students at the Faculty of Medicine with the accreditation of A, B and C respectively - each of the public and private colleges. Results: The results of the qualitative analysis portrait that UKDI has an impact on the student learning. The impact of learning that occurs associated with two things, the first is related to the quality of student learning and the second related to student metacognitive regulation. The general quality of the student learning that occurs in the face of UKDI is still low quality, learn by rote. For metacognitive regulation is related to the allocation, the number and distribution of learning, the selection of learning materials, the selection of learning resources, the selection of a place of learning, learning strategies, learning to maintain consistency, and monitor the process of learning and improvement. Conclusion: UKDI have an impact on the learning of medical students, both in the quality of learning and metacognitive regulation.
