Abstract

Majority of medical students choose clinical specialties as their career choice, compared to other medical fields. This study aimed to finding an effective model of career exploration behaviour in medical students to construct effective career interventions. This study obtained 1030 students of medical faculties in Indonesia. All data used an online survey questionnaire that was collected starting from October 12th-25th 2015. Data analysis used Partial Least Square-Path Modelling using R statistical software to create a model in order to find correlation and pathway among each variable. The result showed both direct and indirect correlation towards the variables studied. Personal accomplishment had a stronger influence on self-efficacy (β=0.317, p<0.001). This study concluded that verbal persuasion and self-efficacy correlate directly to career exploration. All variables are related to career exploration in medical students. Educators and policymakers are able to construct intervention in this area to encourage medical students to start exploring career options early.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Community-based education (CBE) clerkship in Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University (FMDU) is implemented after finishing clinical rotation in tertiary hospital, whereas in Gadjah Mada University (FMGMU), is a part of clinical rotation. To have insight information of this difference method, the CBE clerkship in FMDU and FMGMU were compared. Methods: Close and open-ended students’ questionnaires were administered in the end of CBE clerkship. Results: Response rate to the questionnaire was 97.8% (n=286). FMDU students reported the most unprepared skills for CBE clerkship was blood smear of malaria, whereas FMGMU’s students reported management of PHC centre. Both students perceived that they are well prepared in communication skills, management of communicable diseases, and several clinical skills, and also reported that they have frequent experience in outpatient department. FMDU’ students perceived that CBE clerkship gave opportunity to work independently, and they felt more prepared to work as a doctor in the community. On the other hand, FMGMU students felt not so confident in patient management, and reported that supervisor did not give enough assistance. They suggested that CBE clerkship should be done at least after clinical rotation in two Departments, i.e.: Internal Medicine or Paediatric andSurgery or Ob-gyn.Conclusions: CBE clinical clerkship required students’ confidence and independency. Preparation should be done properly not only for the students but also supervisor in the community. Tertiary hospital, which has enough skillful supervisors, is important to train basic clinical skills to students before sending them to the community.

Abstract

Choosing a career is an essential stage in medical students’ life. Previous researchers all across the world have been conducted studies to examine determinants of career choices in general and medical careers in sociodemographic and behavioral perspectives. While most of the studies centered on general career choices determinants and located mostly in western countries with general career choices as their topics, few studies explore about medical students’ career choices determinants in a collectivist culture like Indonesia. Hence, this study aimed to explore and describe determinants of medical students’ career choices in collectivist culture setting. Participants, 62 students in total, were recruited from all stages of undergraduate medical students in Sriwijaya University in November 2015 until January 2016. Each of focus groups was led by a facilitator to explore medical students’ career choices’ determinants. Transcripts encoded according to recurring topics and themes that came up during their discussions. Eight themes identified from the discussions were: four major, two intermediate and two minor issues. Major themes were financial gain, prestige, personal interest and family influence. In conclusion, some points can be used to increase medical students’ interest in various medical career fields. Exposure to medical career information should not target merely on medical students but also to their family and the community as well. Government roles in providing financial incentives as well as career opportunities to medical fields to increase the interest of medical students in the certain medical field.DETERMINAN KARIeER MAHASISWA KEDOKTERAN: SEBUAH STUDI KUALITATIFPemilihan karier merupakan salah satu fase yang penting dalam kehidupan seorang mahasiswa kedokteran.
