Abstract

The bag of visual words (BOVW) has recently been used for image classification in large datasets. A major problem of image classification using BOVW is high dimensionality, with most features usually being irrelevant and different BOVW for multi-view images in each class. Therefore, the selection of significant visual words for multi-view images in each class is an essential method to reduce the size of BOVW while retaining the high performance of image classification. Many feature scores for ranking produce low classification performance for class imbalanced distributions and multi-views in each class. We propose a feature score based on the statistical t-test technique, which is a statistical evaluation of the difference between two sample means, to assess the discriminating power of each individual feature. The multi-class image classification performance of the proposed feature score is compared with four modern feature scores, such as Document Frequency (DF), Mutual information (MI), Pointwise Mutual information (PMI) and Chi-square statistics (CHI). The results show that the average F1-measure performance on the Paris dataset and the SUN397 dataset using the proposed feature score are 92% and 94%, respectively, while all other feature scores do not exceed 80%.

Abstract

Roads and their lighting systems are important facilities of local municipals. Most conventional street lighting systems are switched on/off at regular intervals of time. The consequence is that a large portion of electrical energy consumed by the street lighting is wasted meaninglessly if the road traffic is low. With the increasing interest in the global energy consumption and green environment requirement, automated street lighting system raises much interest around the world. In this paper, a cost effective and energy efficient automated street light control based on microcontroller and ZigBee wireless network is proposed. The street lamps are automatically controlled with the ambient light conditions, the road pedestrian and vehicle traffic conditions, and the neighbor traffic conditions.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6446

Abstract

The basic purpose of an electric power system is to supply its consumers with electric energy as parsimoniously as possible and with a sensible degree of continuity and quality. It is expected that the solicitation of power system reliability assessment in bulk power systems will continue to increase in the future especially in the newly deregulated power diligence. This paper presents the research conducted on the three areas of incorporating multi-state generating unit models, evaluating system performance indices and identifying transmission paucities in complex system adequacy assessment. The incentives for electricity market participants to endow in new generation and transmission facilities are highly influenced by the market risk in a complex restructured environment. This paper also presents a procedure to identify transmission deficiencies and remedial modification in the composite generation and transmission system and  focused on the application of probabilistic techniques in composite system adequacy assessment

Abstract

With the proliferation of cloud computing technologies, smartphone users are able to use a variety of cloud computing-based mobile services such as games, education, entertainment, and social networking. Despite the popularity of such a mobile cloud computing, the complicated multi-tier system configuration of the mobile application must be one of the major impediments to develop mobile cloud applications. This paper presents development processes and procedures for developing mobile cloud applications by effectively applying Unified Modeling Language (UML), a representative object-oriented modeling language. The paper is intended to enhance the development productivity of the mobile cloud application and to improve the effectiveness of communication between software developers. In addition, we used the Android mobile platform and Amazon Web Service for cloud computing in order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach to systematically apply the UML profiles and diagrams for cloud-based mobile applications.

Abstract

The phase winding of Switched Reluctance Motor is excited during the positive increasing region of the phase inductance to get the motoring action. This is performed through a converter. This paper presents the speed control of DC Split converter fed 4 phase 8/6 Switched Reluctance Motor drive using PWM controller. The speed of the motor is controlled by varying the duty ratio of the PWM controller.  Simulation results are verified with hardware implementation of the controller. The Hall sensors provided in the motor provide signals corresponding to the position of the rotor. The pulses to the IGBT switches are generated by TMS320F2407A DSP controller. The waveforms of the PWM signals and Hall sensor signals are captured by means of Digital Storage Oscilloscope. Motor phase currents, phase voltages and associated numerical values are captured and analyzed by Power Analyzer. Steady state analysis of the drive has been carried out.

Abstract

The defect present in the bearing of a rolling element may affect the performance of the rotating machinery and may reduce its efficiency. For this reason the condition monitoring of a rolling element bearing is very essential. So many measuring parameters are there to diagnose the fault in a rolling element bearing. Acoustic signature monitoring is one of them. Every rolling element bearing has its own acoustic signature when it is in healthy condition and when the bearing get defected then there is a change in its original acoustic signature. This change in acoustic signature can be monitored and analyzed to detect the fault present in the bearing. But the noise present in the acquired acoustic signal may affect the analysis. So the noisy acoustic signal must be filtered before the analysis. In this work the experiment is performed in two stages. In first stage the filtration of the acquired acoustic signal is done by employing the active noise cancellation (ANC) filtering techniques. In second stage the filtered signal is used for the further analysis. For the analysis initially the static analysis is done and then the frequency and the time-frequency analysis is done to diagnose the defect in the bearing. From all the three analysis the information about the defect present in the bearing is well detected.

Abstract

This paper proposes a delta connected IM model that takes the Stator winding Inter-Turn Short Circuit (SITSC) fault into account. In order to detect the fault and evaluate its severity, an observer based FDI method is suggested. It allows the generation of residual using extended Kalman filter (EKF). To overcome the problem of the EKF initialization, the cyclic optimization method is applied to determine its tuning parameters. The advantage of the proposed approach is the real-time quantification of the fault severity and the quick fault detection. Using numerical simulation under both the healthy and the faulty conditions, the proposed IM model and EKF-based FDI approach are confirmed. Experimental results obtained by a real-time implementation on test-bench validate the simulated results.

Abstract

This paper discusses a standard flow on how an automated test bench environment which is randomized with constraints can verify a SOC efficiently for its functionality and coverage. Today, in the time of multimillion gate ASICs, reusable intellectual property (IP), and system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs, verification consumes about 70 % of the design effort. Automation means a machine completes a task autonomously, quicker and with predictable results. Automation requires standard processes with well-defined inputs and outputs. By using this efficient methodology it is possible to provide a general purpose automation solution for verification, given today’s technology. Tools automating various portions of the verification process are being introduced. Here, we have Communication based SOC The content of the paper discusses about the methodology used to verify such a SOC-based environment. Cadence Efficient Verification Methodology libraries are explored for the solution of this problem. We can take this as a state of art approach in verifying SOC environments. The goal of this paper is to emphasize the unique testbench for different SOC using Efficient Verification Constructs implemented in system verilog for SOC verification.

Abstract

Online social networks have practically a go-to source for information divulging, social exchanges and finding new friends. The popularity of such sites is so profound that they are widely used by people belonging to different age groups and various regions. Widespread use of such sites has given rise to privacy and security issues. This paper proposes a set of rules to be incorporated to safeguard the privacy policies of related users while sharing information and other forms of media online. The proposed access control network takes into account the content sensitivity and confidence level of the accessor to resolve the conflicting privacy policies of the co-owners.

Abstract

A Software engineering is an approach to software development. Once software gets developed and delivered, it needs maintenance. Changes in software incur due to new requirements of the end-user, identification of bug in software or failure to achieve system objective. It has been observed that successive maintenance in the developed software reduces software quality and degrades the performance of software system. Reengineering is an approach of retaining the software quality and improving maintainability of the software system. But the question arises “when to reengineer the software”. The paper proposed a framework for software reengineering process using decision tree approach which helps decision makers to decide whether to maintain or reengineer the software systems.
