Abstract

Soiling refers to the accumulation of dust on PV modules which plays a small but significant role in degrading solar photovoltaics system efficiency. Its effect cannot be generalized because the severity is location and environment dependent. Currently, there are limited studies available on the soiling effect in the hot and humid Malaysian tropical climate. This paper presents an experimental-based approach to investigate the effect of soiling on PV module performance in a tropical climate. The experiment involved a full day exposure of a polycrystalline PV module in the outdoors with accelerated artificial dust loading and an indoor experiment for testing variable dust dimensions. The findings show that for the worst case, the module’s output can be reduced by as much as 20%.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new adaptive speech compression system based on discrete wave atoms transform. First, the signal is decomposed on wave atoms, then wave atom coefficients are truncated using a new adaptive thresholding which depends on the SNR estimation. The thresholded coefficients are quantized using Max Lloyd scalar quantizer. Besides, they are encoded using zero run length encoding followed by Huffman coding. Numerous simulations are performed to prove the robustness of our approach. The results of current work are compared with wavelet based compression by using objective criteria, namely CR, SNR, PSNR and NRMSE. This study shows that the wave atoms transform is more appropriate than wavelets transform since it offers a higher compression ratio and a better speech quality.

Abstract

A software product line consists of a family of software systems. Most of quality attributes are defined for single systems. When we are facing a family of products instead of a single system, some aspects of architecture evaluation, such as cost, time, and reusability of available assets, become more highlighted. In this paper a new quality attribute for software product line, which we called it extractability, is introduced. Also extractability measuring method and relationship between extractability with some quality attributes is presented. Abstract

The sensing methods with multiple receive antennas  in the Cognitive Radio (CR) device, provide a promising solution for reducing the error rates in the detection of the Primary User (PU) signal. The received Signal to Noise Ratio at the CR receiver is enhanced using the diversity combiners. This paper proposes a statistical approach based on minimum Bayes factors and p-Values as diversity combiners in the spectrum sensing scenario. The effect of these statistical measures in sensing the spectrum in a CR environment is investigated. Through extensive Monte Carlo simulations it is shown that this novel statistical approach based on Bayes factors provides a promising solution to combine the test statistics from multiple receiver antennas and can be used as an alternative to the conventional hypothesis testing methods for spectrum sensing. The Bayesian results provide more accurate results when measuring the strength of the evidence against the hypothesis.

Abstract

The power quality compensator chosen in this paper is a DSTATCOM which integrates a three phase four leg Voltage Source Converter (VSC) with a DC capacitor. The major role of the DSTATCOM is to mitigate the components of harmonic/reactive current present in the line current thereby shapes the grid current to be sinusoidal and improves the power factor nearly unity under varying conditions. In addition DSATATCOM mitigates neutral current (Isn) and balances the load currents under unbalanced conditions in three phase four wire (3P4W) distribution system. The control strategy proposed for the DSTATCOM is a Neural Network (NN) based p-q-r theory with two Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controllers for a 3P4W distribution system. The reference signal for 3P3W Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) is calculated by implementing an ANN controller. The alleviation of Isn under unbalanced condition is achieved by another ANN controller which produces reference signal for the 1Φ APF. The performance of the proposed DSTATCOM is analysed for various conditions through simulations in MATLAB SIMULINK and the simulation results justify the effectiveness of the propounded NN based control algorithm for DSTATCOM.

Abstract

Ultrasonic Doppler signals are widely used in the detection of cardiovascular pathologies or the evaluation of the degree of stenosis in the femoral arteries. The presence of stenosis can be indicated by disturbing the blood flow in the femoral arteries, causing spectral broadening of the Doppler signal. To analyze these types of signals and determine stenosis index, a number of time-frequency methods have been developed, such as the short-time Fourier transform, the continuous wavelets transform, the wavelet packet transform, and the S-transform.

Abstract

The raise in the recent security incidents of cloud computing and its challenges is to secure the data. To solve this problem, the integration of mobile with cloud computing, Mobile biometric authentication in cloud computing is presented in this paper. To enhance the security, the biometric authentication is being used, since the Mobile cloud computing is popular among the mobile user. This paper examines how the mobile cloud computing (MCC) is used in security issue with finger biometric authentication model. Through this fingerprint biometric, the secret code is generated by entropy value. This enables the person to request for accessing the data in the desk computer. When the person requests the access to the authorized user through Bluetooth in mobile, the Authorized user sends the permit access through fingerprint secret code. Finally this fingerprint is verified with the database in the Desk computer. If it is matched, then the computer can be accessed by the requested person.

Abstract

The proposed method partially and completely encrypts the gray scale Document images. The complete image encryption is also performed to compare the performance with the existing encryption methods. The partial encryption is carried out by segmenting the image using the Quad-tree decomposition method based on the variance of the image block. The image blocks with uniform pixel levels are considered insignificant blocks and others the significant blocks. The pixels in the significant blocks are permuted by using 1D Skew tent chaotic map. The partially encrypted image blocks are further permuted using 2D Henon map to increase the security level and fed as input to complete encryption. The complete encryption is carried out by diffusing the partially encrypted image. Two levels of diffusion are performed. The first level simply modifies the pixels in the partially encrypted image with the Bernoulli’s chaotic map. The second level establishes the interdependency between rows and columns of the first level diffused image. The experiment is conducted for both partial and complete image encryption on the Document images. The proposed scheme yields better results for both partial and complete encryption on Speed, statistical and dynamical attacks. The results ensure better security when compared to existing encryption schemes.

Abstract

This paper highlights the transformer design optimization problem. The objective of transformer design optimization problem requires minimizing the total mass (or cost) of the core and wire material by satisfying constraints imposed by international standards and transformer user specification. The constraints include appropriate limits on efficiency, voltage regulation, temperature rise, no-load current and winding fill factor. The design optimizations seek a constrained minimum mass (or cost) solution by optimally setting the transformer geometry parameters and require magnetic properties. This paper shows the above design problems can be formulated in genetic algorithm(GA) and simulated annealing (SA) format. The importance of the GA and SA format stems for two main features. First it provides efficient and reliable solution for the design optimization problem with several variables. Second, it guaranteed that the obtained solution is global optimum. Abstract

A guidance system is needed when freshmen explore their new building environment. With the advancements of mobile technologies, a guidance system using mobile computing devices such as mobile phones or tablets could aid freshmen in locating the desired destination with ease. The proposed system consists of three main subsystems: the marker-based cyber-physical interaction (CPI) system, the indoor positioning (IP) system, and the augmented-reality (AR) system. With the help of visible markers and invisible markers, the CPI system allows the users to do interactions between the physical and cyber environments; the IP system produces accurate user position information; the AR system provides the users with good user experiences. An Android application, named Engfi Gate, is developed to realize the system design in the test environment. This paper also shows the comparisons of the proposed system with other related systems. Furthermore, the design architecture of Engfi Gate system can be used in other location-based applications.
