Abstract

The practical economic load dispatch problem is a non-convex, non-smooth, and non-linear optimization problem due to including practical considerations such as valve-point loading effects and multiple fuel options. An optimization algorithm named crow search algorithm is proposed in this paper to solve the practical non-convex economic load dispatch problem. Three cases with different economic load dispatch configurations are studied. The simulation results and statistical analysis show the efficiency of the proposed crow search algorithm. Also, the simulation results are compared to the other reported algorithms. The comparison of results confirm the high-quality solutions and the effectiveness of the proposed method for solving the non-convex practical economic load dispatch problem.

Abstract

In this paper, the effect of DG penetration on the short circuit level has been studied in a distribution system.  The number of DG sources is increased to study the effect that these changes may have on the coordination of protective directional over-current relays (DOCR). The relays in the distribution system have to be coordinated so as to avoid mal-operation and unnecessary outage of healthy part of the system.  Results are compared to that of the normal case to investigate the impact of the DG on the short circuit currents of the network to deduce the effect on protective devices and some conclusions are documented. This paper presents the short circuit analysis of single phase to ground fault applied to simple radial distribution system and the corresponding Overcurrent relay coordination is presented using NEPLAN Software. Abstract

The simplest approach to reduce network latency for data gathering in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is to use multiple mobile elements rather than a single mobile sink. However, the most challneging issues faced this approach are firstly the high network cost as a result of using large number of mobile elements. Secondly, it suffers from the difficulty of network partitioning to achieve an efficient load balancing among these mobile elements. In this study, a collaborative data collection algorithm (CDCA) is developed. Simulation results presented in this paper demonstrated that with this algorithm the latency is significantly reduced at small number of mobile elements. Furthermore, the performance of CDCA algorithm is compared with the Area Splitting Algorithm (ASA). Consequently, the CDCA showed superior performance in terms of network latency, load balancing, and the required number of mobile elements.

Abstract

In modern agricultural field, pest detection is a major role in plant cultivation. In order to increase the Production rate of agricultural field, the presence of whitefly pests which cause leaf discoloration is the major problem.  This emphasizes the necessity of image segmentation, which divides an image into parts that have strong correlations with objects to reflect the actual information collected from the real world. Image processing is affected by illumination conditions, random noise and environmental disturbances due to atmospheric pressure or temperature fluctuation. The quality of pest images is directly affected by atmosphere medium, pressure and temperature. The fuzzy c means (FCM) have been proposed to identify accurate location of whitefly pests. The watershed transform has interesting properties that make it useful for many different image segmentation applications: it is simple and intuitive, can be parallelized, and always produces a complete division of the image. However, when applied to pest image analysis, it has important drawbacks (over segmentation, sensitivity to noise). In this paper, pest image segmentation using marker controlled watershed segmentation is presented. Objective of this paper is segmenting the pest image and comparing the results of fuzzy c means algorithm and marker controlled watershed transformation. The performance of an image segmentation algorithms are compared using nonlinear objective assessment or the quantitative measures like structural content, peak signal to noise ratio, normalized correlation coefficient, average difference and normalized absolute error. Out of the above methods the experimental results show that fuzzy c means algorithm performs better than watershed transformation algorithm in processing pest images.

Abstract

We are considering the problem of maximum power point tracking MPPT in wind energy conversion system (WECS). The paper proposes a new control strategy to maximize the wind aerodynamic energy captured in variable speed wind turbine with a separately excited DC-Generator and transformed to the battery through a controlled DC-DC converter. The proposed strategy controls the stip speed ratio via the rotor angular speed to an optimum point at wich the power coefficient is maximal. The controller is designed using the backstepping technique. A formal analysis based on lyapunov stability is developed to describe the control system performances. In addition to closed-loop global asymptotic stability, it is proved that the controller actually meets the MPPT requirement. The above results are confirmed by simulations.

Abstract

Human pupil eye detection is a significant stage in iris segmentation which is representing one of the most important steps in iris recognition. In this paper, we present a new method of highly accurate pupil detection. This method is consisting of many steps to detect the boundary of the pupil. First, the read eye image (R, G, B), then determine the work area which is consist of many steps to detect the boundary of the pupil. The determination of the work area contains many circles which are larger than pupil region. The work area is necessary to determine pupil region and neighborhood regions afterward the difference in color and intensity between pupil region and surrounding area is utilized, where the pupil region has color and intensity less than surrounding area. After the process of detecting pupil region many steps on the resulting image is applied in order to concentrate the pupil region and delete the others regions by using many methods such as dilation, erosion, canny filter, circle hough transforms to detect pupil region as well as apply optimization to choose the best circle that represents the pupil area. Abstract

To make a perfect project plan, the software size of the order from the customer is the most important factor. The biggest challenge for the project manager is to estimate the project end date in the beginning of the project i.e. in project planning phase with realistic accuracy. Apart from other major inputs to estimate the project end date, expected team capability (productivity) and estimated software size are the major inputs that may influence the project end date. Software size is one of the most significant independent metric available in the planning phase and project manager has to estimate the other metrics based on the initial estimated software size. There is no direct relationship available between software size and project duration or software size and team productivity, however, there are industry data published by Quantitative Software Management and ISBSG that shows how these metrics influence each other. In this paper, using the data published by ISBSG and Quantitative Software Management, we try to statistically establish how productivity and project duration are influenced by software size. We have done linear regression analysis by generating the secondary data based on the data published by ISBSG and Quantitative Software Management. Linear regression equation validated with the actual project data and experimental results suggest that that productivity is significantly dependent on software size, however, project duration does not significantly depend on software size but may also be dependent on other metrics like team size, apart from software size.

Abstract

Some aquatic ecosystems in rivers depend on the river water, so it needs to be maintained by measuring and analyzing the river water quality. STORET is one of the methods used to measure the river water quality, but it takes a quite high of time and costs. Fuzzy Tsukamoto is an alternative method that works by grouping the river water data, but it is difficult to determine the membership function value. The solution offered in this study is the use of genetic algorithm to determine the membership function value of each criterion. Based on the test results, the optimization of fuzzy membership function using genetic algorithm provides higher accuracy value that is 95%, while the accuracy value without optimization process is 90%. The parameters used in genetic algorithm are as follows: population size is 80, generation number is 175, crossover rate (cr) is 0.6, and mutation rate (mr) is 0.4.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper presents an approach of obstacle distance estimation for smart wheelchair. A smart wheelchair was equipped with a camera and a laser line. The camera was used to capture an image from the environment in order to sense the pathway condition. The laser line was used in combination with camera to recognize an obstacle in the pathway based on the shape of laser line image in certain angle. A blob method detection was then applied on the laser line image to separate and recognize the pattern of the detected obstacles. The laser line projector and camera which was mounted in fixed-certain position ensured a fixed relation between blobs-gap and obstacle-to-wheelchair distance. A simple linear regression from 16 obtained data was used to respresent this relation as the estimated obstacle distance. As a result, the average error between the estimation and the actual distance was 1.25 cm from 7 data testing experiments. Therefore, the experiment results show that the proposed method was able to estimate the distance between wheelchair and the obstacle.
