Abstract

This paper discusses the performance of three and five-phase double stator slotted rotor permanent magnet generator (DSSR-PMG). The objective of this research is to propose  five-phase DSSR-PMG structure that could minimize output voltage ripple compared to three phase. In this research Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to simulate the characteristic of the three and five-phase permanent magnet generator at various speeds. The characteristic of back-EMF, flux linkage, cogging torque and flux density for three and five-phase configurations is presented. As a result, five-phase DSSR-PMG shows a lower cogging  torque and voltage ripple compared to three-phase. The cogging torque for five-phase is 80% lower than three-phase DSSR-PMG and the ripple voltage (peak to peak) of back-EMF in five-phase is 2.3% compared to the three-phase DSSR-PMG which is 55%.

Abstract

There are abundant of wave energy converter technologies available to convert wave energy into useable energy. However, most of them are huge and suitable for large application. Thus, this paper aimed to propose portable pico generator designs for small scale application. Investigation on the performance of designs with varying halbach magnet shapes was mainly focused and discussed. Two designs of different magnet shape i.e. triangular and trapezoid were proposed. Open-circuit simulation and optimization results were obtained using Finite Element Method. From the results, it was found out that Trapezoid Magnet Design produced better performance and lower material cost compared to another proposed design, Triangular Magnet as well as conventional Rectangular Magnet shape.

Abstract

Power system harmonics are a menace to electric power system with disastrous consequence. Due to the presence of non linear load, power quality of the system gets affected.  To overcome this, shunt active power filter have been used near harmonic producing loads or at the point of common coupling to block current harmonics. The shunt active power filter is designed to minimize harmonics in source current and reactive power in the non linear power supplies which are creating harmonics. In this paper, Instantaneous power of p-q theory is employed to generate the reference currents and PI controller is used to control the dc link voltage. In addition to this, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technique is used to minimize the harmonics produced by nonlinear load. The main objective of this paper is to analyze and compare THD of the source current with PI controller and by artificial neural network based back propagation algorithm. The proposed system is designed with MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

Abstract

This paper present an evaluation of linear time frequency distribution analysis for voltage source inverter system (VSI). Power electronic now are highly demand in industrial such as manufacturing, industrial process and semiconductor because of the reliability and sustainability. However, the phenomenon that happened in switch fault has become a critical issue in the development of advanced. This causes problems that occur study on fault switch at voltage source inverter (VSI) must be identified more closely so that problems like this can be prevented. The TFD which is STFT  and S-transform method are analyzed the switch fault of VSI.  To identify the VSI switches fault, the parameter of fault signal such as instantaneous of average current, RMS current, RMS fundamental current, total waveform distortion, total harmonic distortion and total non-harmonic distortion can be estimated from TFD. The analysis information are useful especially for industrial application in the process for identify the switch fault detection. Then the accuracy of both method, which mean STFT and S-transform are identified by the lowest value of mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). In addition, the S-transform gives a better accuracy compare with STFT and it can be implement for fault detection system.

Abstract

This paper presents a high efficiency initial rotor position estimation method for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM). The approach uses the viable inductance model to analyze the optimal motor injection sine wave frequency as the motor’s test signal. Unlike other high-frequency injection methods, this approach does not require trial and error experiments. The injection frequency is identified by programmable simulations using Matlab. Experimental evaluation of 3-phase PMSM showed that this injection frequency optimization method works successfully. The proposed method can find the optimal injection frequency without experimentation, and outperforms other test signals in terms of accuracy, vibration quantity and noise. This microprocessor-developed 3-phase PMSM control driver can be applied to electrical appliances, machine tools and automation.

Abstract

A Permanent Magnet BLDC motor is designed for reduction in cogging torque and flux per pole. The cogging torque causes direct impact in permanent magnet BLDC motor performance by causing torque ripple problems. This paper proposes a new method for reducing cogging torque by adapting to U-clamped magnetic poles. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to calculate the cogging torque and the flux per pole for different shapes of magnetic pole. It can be shown that the cogging torque could be greatly reduced by adapting to U-clamped magnetic poles. At the same time it is found that the flux per pole is also considerably reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the cogging torque and flux per pole for various designs available in the literature.

Abstract

This article describes firstly a wind power production line, principally a wind turbine constitutes her and brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG). The models of these components are developed, and control objective of BDFIG is to achieve a dynamic performance similar to the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) using a stator flux field oriented control (FOC) and direct power control (DPC) strategy. After, the simulation program using Matlab/Simulink has been developed. The performances of this strategy are evaluated and analyzed, so the results show a good robustness great dynamic and a precision of speed.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new topology of a cascaded multilevel inverter that utilises less number of switches than the conventional topology. The proposed topology maintains the performance of conventional 7-levels output multilevel inverter while reducing the loss of power, installation area, converter size as well as development cost. The circuit development consists of six switches and one diode. With less number of switching devices in the circuit, there will be a reduction in the gate driver circuits and also in effect fewer switches required for specific intervals of time. Simulation works have been conducted to validate the proposed MLI topology. It is envisaged that the proposed topology can be applied for the system that requires high efficiency and a low electromagnetic interference.

Abstract

The transmission of electric power has to take place in the most efficient way in addition to providing flexibility in the process. Flexible A.C. Transmission System (FACTS) promotes the use of static controllers to enhance the controllability and increase the power transfer capability. Providing reactive shunt compensation with shunt-connected capacitors and reactors is a well-established technique to get a better voltage profile in a power system. Shunt Capacitors are inexpensive but lack dynamic capabilities, thus some form of dynamically controlled reactive power compensation becomes essential.  In this paper, three phase Distribution Static Var Compensator (D-SVC) has been developed and studied under different conditions. Open loop mode and closed loop mode of operation of D-SVC is simulated and studied. The work presented here is very much useful for distribution system, for effective reactive power management and better Voltage control.

Abstract

Enhancing the switching frequency can increase the power density of a fullbridge dc-dc converter. However, power loss in switches will increase due to the intersection of voltage and current during turn-on and turn-off transition process. The switching power loss can be reduced by making the condition of zero voltage switching (ZVS) which in this study is obtained by using the phase-shifted PWM method. Achieving this condition requires appropriate parameters such as deadtime, leakage inductance, and the primary current of transformer in sufficient value. In this study, ZVS is achieved when the transformer leakage inductance of 14.12 μH is added with external inductance of 24.29 μH which is installed in series with transformer and when the primary current of transformer is more than 1.289 A.
