Abstract

Different types of power conditioning systems are mostly used with renewable energy systems. As the output of solar photovoltaic (PV) is low high voltage converters are required. These converters can be used for both standalone and grid tied systems. A high voltage gain DC-DC converter is proposed which can be used with photovoltaic modules to get high output voltage. This converter can provide a high voltage gain and a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is used to maintain the high output voltage of the proposed converter coupled with solar photovoltaic module. The PID controller is first designed using classical Ziegler Nichol’s method (ZN) and optimal control of the converter is obtained by using different optimisation methods like particle swarm optimisation (PSO), bacteria foraging algorithm (BFA) and its comparison is presented in this paper.

Abstract

In the current paper, the inverter feeding doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) in the case of short circuit switches fault is presented. Defects diagnosis is based on the so-called the Lissajous curves of DFIG rotor currents. For this purpose, the modeling of the variable speed wind energy conversion chain based on the DFIG, is firstly introduced, after that a description of the voltage source inverter operating mode is presented. Finally, rotor currents Lissajous curves are analyzed in case of a non-defective and defective inverter. Simulation results were achieved using MATLAB^®- SIMULINK^® package, thus confirming the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract

A novel operation of three-level H-bridge and common-emitter current source inverters (CSIs) proposed for photovoltaic power converters is presented in this paper. Two photovoltaic systems with two different inverter circuits, i.e. H-bridge and common-emitter CSIs, were connected in parallel to supply a sharing ac power load. In order to regulate the power supplied by each inverter system, proportional integral current controllers were employed. Triangular carrier and sinusoidal signals-based modulation techniques were implemented to both inverters. Some parameters such as load current, inverter’s output current, total harmonics distortion (THD), and efficiency were tested and analyzed. Test results showed that in the parallel operation of these inverters, the average THD percentage of the load current was 0.34% for load power factor 0.996 and 0.62 % for load power factor 0.782. Minimum waveform distortion of inverter ac currents during parallel operation can be achieved if the current magnitudes of both inverters were set the same. In the case of efficiency, the maximum efficiency of the system was 89.07%. Operating the H-bridge CSI with a higher magnitude of the output current will result in higher efficiency of the system.

Abstract

In recent years we have witnessed a real increase in the production of wind turbines and wind farm installations around the world, in order to improve this own energy, several studies have focused on the interest of controlling the active and reactive power of the system. Wind power, and at the same time on the quality of the energy produced and its connection in order to ingest suitable electrical energy into the distribution network. This article studies a new control technology to meet the various constraints in the field. The objective for work is to develop and study the sliding mode control method applied to a wind power system based on doubly fed induction generation (DFIG), as well as an optimization using the fuzzy logic technique. Ensuring the stability of the system is one of the objectives of using the Lyapunov nonlinear technique in the sliding mode control strategy which will be applied to the two converters (machine side and network side). The proposed solution was to validate a simulation on MATLAB/Simulink, tracking test (true wind speed) and also the robustness of the system.

Abstract

This study presents the application of the aquila optimizer (AO) algorithm to determine the parameters of the proportional integral derivative (PID) controller to control the speed of a dc motor. The AO method is inspired by the most popular bird of prey in the northern hemisphere named Aquila. Initially, the proposed AO algorithm is applied to unimodal and multimodal benchmark optimization problems. To get the performance of the AO method, the controller is compared with other methods, namely Seagull optimization algorithm (SOA), marine predators algorithm, giza pyramids construction (GPC), and chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA). The results represent that the AO is promising and shows the effectiveness. Determination of PID parameters using the AO method for dc motor speed control system shows superior performance.

Abstract

In the utilization of photovoltaic (PV), the output voltage produced is unstable because the conditions of irradiation received by PV is not uniform. Therefore, a direct current (DC) voltage converter is needed as an output voltage regulator. In this research, buck-boost converter is proposed to regulate the desired output voltage. The proposed controller in this research is a sliding mode controller (SMC) and employ a linear sliding surface to maintain the regulated voltage stable. This research was conducted by determining the component parameters and state space model of the buck-boost converter. Proportional integral derivative (PID) controller with integral of time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) method is used as a comparison of the proposed method. The performance results were observed from the buck-boost converter by performing 3 fault scenarios, variation in supply voltage, resistor in load side, and the desired output voltage. The results obtained of SMC has a faster settling time than PID controller. The voltage deviation of buck-boost converter exhibits that SMC is smaller than the PID control. In addition, under some experiment conditions, the PID control could not or did not fit in some scenarios while the output control values of SMC matched the changes in the entire scenarios.

Abstract

In power generation, a 24-hour load profile can vary significantly throughout the day. Therefore, power generation must be adjusted to reduce money loss due to excess generation. This paper presents a short-term load forecasting (STLF) system design using artificial neural network (ANN). As ANN come in many different configurations, this paper analyzes the best ANN configuration via trial-and-error method. To train the ANN, historical load data from 2016 to 2018 of power south energy cooperative (AEC) is used. A simple feedforward ANN type with one hidden layer is implemented, where 48 neurons are used at the input layer. For hidden layer, an arbitrary 50 neurons are chosen and 24 neurons at output layer are used to generate a day ahead 24-hour load profile. To measure the best activation function for SLTF application, four non-linear activation functions will be tested and the best activation function is used to create two and three hidden layer ANN architecture. Finally, the performance of the two new networks will be compared against one hidden layer model. From the obtained result, the best performing model is found as two hidden layers ANN with Tanh as its hidden layer activation function with 8.9% of testing mean absolute percentage error (MAPE).

Abstract

The axial flux machines (AFMs) which got discovered long back in 1821 were shelved out due to their manufacturing complexities. These machines are now reconsidered as novel topologies as their topology is well suitable for fulfilling the present day technical and societal needs. An attempt has been made in this paper to assess the different structures of Axial Flux Machines and to identify the feasible applications. The advantages of AFMs have been highlighted in wind energy conversion systems and electrical vehicle applications. An exhaustive comparison has been carried out in this work between the conventional radial flux and axial flux machines through their sizing equations.

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel approach to 4-quadrant speed control of a direct current (DC) motor based on the use of a semi-Z source inverter which has 2 active switches and 2 switching states. The semi-Z source inverter topology is analyzed for design purposes and results and relationships are discussed. The objective of this simulation is to design and analyze the performance of closed loop speed control of a DC motor using a semi-Z source inverter under realistic operating conditions. The findings of this project can be useful for designing several household appliances as well as systems like lathe machines, hoists, conveyors, and fans. Closed loop system designed for automatic speed control of a DC motor is obtained by using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results show that the proposed system works as intended.

Abstract

This paper develops a new control algorithm of a distributed generation system in the standalone operation. Behaviour of three-phase voltage source inverter is investigated and the guidelines for tuning the control parameters are presented. Based on Super-Twisting algorithm, the proposed controller guarantees the load voltage performance under different types of loads. The proposed controller is established for an inner-loop current controller and an outer-loop voltage controller in a dual control scheme. The proposed scheme is very simple, thus tuning control parameters is easy and the computational burden of the controllers is low. In order to validate the load current of the proposed system feasibility, a reduced-order observer is adopted. The simulation results indicate a more reliable and efficient performance compared to the standard sliding control and the adaptive control.
