Among the DC-DC converters, an isolated bidirectional dual active bridge converter is a core circuit for high-frequency power converters in distributed energy system applications. These high-frequency power conversion systems attract academia and industry due to various advantages, such as high-power density, less weight, reduced noise, high efficiency, low cost and high reliability. First, the importance of power electronic converters in modern-day life is introduced. Second, a topological overview of voltage-fed and current-fed isolated bidirectional dual active bridge converters is presented with their importance in integrating hybrid power sources. Third, switching modes of isolated bidirectional DC-DC converters are also presented with a degree of freedom of control. Forth, performance evaluation of voltage-fed and current-fed isolated bidirectional converters has been presented with an example. Their suitability in integrating fuel cells and photovoltaics with energy storage systems in low to medium-power applications is presented.

Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is used at each generating station or synchronous generators to maintain voltage supply at steady state or at a constant value otherwise the performance of the generator will be affected. The combination of AVR system with controllers clears fluctuation due to variation in load, speed, temperature, and power factor. This causes deviation in generator’s voltage and damage to power equipment. This work presents performance enhancement of AVR system using Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) with pre-filter control technique. The enhanced performance was achieved by designing a nonlinear model of a synchronous generator, a PID controller and a low pass filter or pre-filter using MATLAB/Simulink model. The introduction of the proposed PID controller with LPF at load variation of 20 seconds, reduces the rise time and the peak time to 5.2975 seconds and 12.31 seconds respectively. This increases the overshoot and the settling time to 4.28 seconds and 17.60 seconds. However, the developed scheme provides a stable time response performance for various desired generator voltages considered. The performance of the proposed scheme was compared with conventional PID controlled AVR system without LPF. The proposed scheme provides more stability as indicated by the percentage overshoot, which is 4.5788% (for PID) and 4.2765% (for PID with prefilter). This has contributed to knowledge an AVR control system with better performance in terms of rise time, peak time, overshoot and settling time for stabilized generator output voltage.

The rising electricity consumption, rapid fossil fuel depletion, and a higher shift to the use of renewable or green energy resources have increased the need to integrate renewable and distributed energy resources (DERs), like solar photovoltaic (PV) energy to power the utility grids. In this study, the researchers have determined the effect of PV inverters to offer reactive power to an adapted IEEE 13-node distribution network. Power flow analyses were conducted on MATLAB/Simulink for various reactive power modes of PV inverters to show the effect of the reactive power on the regulation of grid voltage, reduced the total harmonic distortion (THD), and maintain the power factor so as to improve the ability of the system to handle power. The result shows that using a 400 KW PV system in a bus (675) led to a reduction in the power generated from the generator by 11%, and the use of the reactive power capability of PV inverters on-site improved the voltage profile significantly. as well, reduced the voltage THD by 27.09% when injected with reactive power, reduce the current THD by 77.39% When absorbing reactive power, and improved the power factor on-site.

Currently, as part of the distributed generation paradigm, photovoltaic energy has a growing development. The diversity of the loads, their nonlinearity, and the penetration of the renewable energy sources (RES) cause a worsening of the energy quality indicators. The main quality indicators that affect hybrid photovoltaic systems are voltage and current harmonic distortion, voltage deviation, and voltage and current asymmetry in the system. The construction of physical and mathematical models in software applications, such as MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape, makes it possible to simulate the operating conditions of these systems and determine the values of the indicators that account for the quality of the electric power supplied. In this work, the modeling and simulation of a photovoltaic system connected to the network that feeds a mixed industrial area are carried out to determine the indicators of energy quality.

Multi-axis force and torque sensors are type of transducers. They can measure force and torque in three dimensions. These sensors have multiple applications in robotic systems. The majority of these type of sensors use the strain measurement in any elastic structure. There are multiple approaches for strain measurement which include resistive strain gauge, piezo-electric and capacitive technologies. The evaluation of such a system can be done on various parameters, maximizing the acceptable sensing range while minimizing measurement errors/crosstalk is the main design challenge. In future, because force and torque sensors are necessary for service machines to interact with people in different situations, they will be widely deployed. However, it is challenging to find an appropriate force/torque sensor, and the cost is very high, because of certain design concerns and needs. This paper discusses an application based on the multi-axis force/torque sensor. A force-assisted control system has been proposed with simultaneous motorized action using force as feedback. The sensor needs and machine performance are reviewed after a thorough analysis of relevant data. This thorough investigation will benefit in the interfacing of specialized force/torque sensors to reduce crosstalk and aid in broadening the scope of service machines in which they can be used.

In this paper, the nonlinear model of the bridgeless single-switch ac-dc single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) in discontinuous conduction mode is derived. In addition, a robust control method is introduced to accommodate the variations in input voltage and load current. The current-mode controlled power converter is designed to operate in buck and boost modes. The proposed closed-loop SEPIC converter is simulated in MATLAB to validate the design approach. The current-mode control scheme is also compared with the conventional voltage-mode controller. It is confirmed that the proposed control scheme exhibits precise tracking performance and enhanced transient response under large disturbances.

In a micro grid system during standalone condition the system may not be stable and might not compensate the required load. Especially for renewable source integrated micro grid system grid disconnected condition is more critical as the renewable sources are unpredictable. The renewable distribution generator needs backup module for support to the loads during standalone condition. In this paper complete distribution network with multiple renewable sources which include PV plant, wind plant and fuel cell source is modeled with power management algorithm (PMA) in only photovoltaic (PV) plant. PMA controls the hybrid backup modules supporting the PV DG. The hybrid backup modules considered for the support are battery unit and super capacitor (SC) unit. The battery and SC units charge or discharge as per the PMA controller with respect to power generated by the PV source. The charge and discharge of these units are dependent on PV power, state of charge (SOC) of battery and SOC of SC. These three sources compensate the critical load connected in the micro grid. A comparative analysis is carried out with and without backup modules and PMA during grid islanding condition on the proposed distribution network. All graphical and parametric comparisons are done using MATLAB/ Simulink software with time domain plots generated by PowerGUI tool.

Innovative power electronic converters have emerged because of renewable energy expansion in the past two decades. Direct current DC grids can operate independently or connected to power grids. A DC grid has distributed generation (DG) units, such as solar panels and, fuel cells. It is necessary to have a DC-DC converter in DC grids to raise output voltage. Boost converters have limited voltage gain, and their switching stress is often equal to their output voltage. This work proposes a converter which gives high gain and less stress when compared to other recent converters. At 0.8 duty ratio, this converter produces an elevated gain of 59. An experimental prototype is built for the proposed converter and the results are presented.

This paper discusses neural network ANN controller applied for five phase shunt active power filter. Three-phase shunt active power filters are widely studied, however in this paper we investigate to extend their application to five phase embarked electrical network. Two-level five phase inverter is used as a shunt active power filter to reduce harmonics and compensate reactive power injected by a five-phase diode rectifier. An artificial neural network controller has been used to regulate the DC side of the inverter, thereby contributing to the calculation of the reference harmonic currents on the one side and controlling the injected harmonic currents on the other. Self-tuning filter (STF) is used to calculate the reference current. By using STF allow to extract the voltage and current fundamental components in the α-β-axis directly without the use of a phase-locked loop (PLL). Simulation results shows that the ANN controller presents appreciable performances in references tracking and the proposed five-phase shunt active power filter provides a sinusoidal supply current in phase with the line voltage with low harmonic distortion.

The work given in this paper illustrates how an adjustable speed 1-Φ induction machine's auxiliary winding is driven. Trina Solar's TSM-250PA05.08 array type model, which is made up of 1 series and 8 parallel-connected photovoltaic (PV) modules, feeds a single induction machine. PV system with perturb and observe (P&O) technique for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) tracking. The induction motor has been controlled using the field-oriented control (FOC) controlling approach. The outcomes of the 1-induction motor simulation were closely related to the parameters of insolation change. The outcomes are taken into account for the system's reaction FOC, which had been demonstrated in electromagnetic torque Te, main and auxiliary winding currents, and motor rotor speed.
