Abstract

Ultrasonic transducers are a key element that governs the performances of both generating and receiving ultrasound in an ultrasonic measurement system. Electrical impedance is a parameter sensitive to the environment of the transducer; it contains information about the transducer but also on the medium in which it is immersed. Several practical applications exploit this property. For this study, the model is implemented with the VHDL-AMS behavioral language. The simulations approaches presented in this work are based on the electrical Redwood model and its parameters are deduced from the transducer electroacoustic characteristics.

Abstract

As the use of energy is increasing, the requirements for the quality of the supplied electrical energy are more tighten. Energy is the most basic and essential of all resources.  As conventional sources of energy are rapidly depleting and the cost of energy is rising, photovoltaic energy becomes a promising alternative source. Photovoltaic (PV) generation is becoming increasingly important as a renewable source since it exhibits a great many merits such as cleanness, little maintenance and no noise. The output power of PV arrays is always changing with weather conditions, i.e., solar irradiation and atmospheric temperature. Therefore, a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control to extract maximum power from the PV arrays at real time becomes indispensable in PV generation system. In recent years, a large number of techniques have been proposed for tracking the maximum power point (MPP). MPPT is used in photovoltaic (PV) systems to maximize the photovoltaic array output power, irrespective of the temperature and radiation conditions and of the load electrical characteristics the PV array output power is used to directly control the dc/dc converter, thus reducing the complexity of the system. The resulting system has high-efficiency. This paper presents in details comparison  of most popular MPPT algorithms techniques which are Perturb & Observe algorithm(P&O) and Improved Perturb & Observe algorithm(IPO). Improved Perturb & Observe algorithm (IPO), is a very promising technique that allows the increase of efficiency and reliability of such systems. Modeling and designing a PV system with Improved Perturb & Observe algorithm (IPO) is remarkably more complex than implementing a standard MPPT technique. In this paper, Improved Perturb & Observe algorithm (IPO), system for PV arrays is proposed and analyzed.

Abstract

This paper describes the design and development of a Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE), which can be used to analyze and assess the performance of Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). The mathematical modeling of the WTE has been done using MATLAB/Simulink platform.  A separately excited DC motor is deployed in order to reproduce the speed/torque, replacing the real wind turbine rotor. The half-bridge DC-DC power converter is developed to run the DC motor in a controlled fashion. Two PI controllers viz speed and current controller are employed which guarantee that the DC motor is following the theoretical (reference) rotational speed of the turbine rotor. A user interface is created in ControlDesk Next Generation, through which the input parameters of the WTE can be altered in real time and the instantaneous effect can be observed by analyzing the output parameters. The designed system offers wide range flexibility and provides a friendly environment in which wind speed and turbine parameters can be altered easily. Hence, offering user to conduct research on variable wind speeds. The DS1104 R&D controller board is employed for implementation of the developed Simulink model. The system design, the model used, and obtained results are presented in this paper.

Abstract

In this paper, we present the modeling, optimization and control of a standalone hybrid energy system combining the photovoltaic and wind renewable energy sources to supply a dc electrical load, with storage batteries as a backup source. With the aim of improving the energy performance of the proposed system, we developed an MPPT controller based on new hybrid and robust approaches to evolve the power quality produced by both PV and Wind subsystems. For the PV subsystem, the proposed approach is based on the methods perturb and observe (P&O), sliding mode control (SMC) and fuzzy logic control (FLC). For the Wind subsystem, the proposed technique is based on the hill climbing search algorithm (HCS) and the fuzzy logic control. Also, to evaluate the efficiency of the developed controls and to analyze the behavior of each system during their maximum power point tracking, a comparison study was carried out with conventional techniques and the simulations are performed under varying weather conditions. The simulations results show the good performance of the proposed MPPT controls compared to other methods with better response time, a higher optimal power point and negligible oscillations.

Abstract

The extensive use of non-linear loads in industry becomes increasingly a serious problem that affects the quality of energy delivered to customers. Therefore, the shunt active power filter (SAPF) has emerged as an important industrial tool to eliminate induced harmonic currents   and compensating of reactive power. This paper proposes an improved control configuration for SAPF based on a modern technique called predictive direct power control (Predictive-DPC). The principle of this control is based on the direct regulation of the instantaneous active and reactive powers to guarantee a good energy quality on the grid side. For this purpose the appropriate average voltage vector which cancels power tracking errors is calculated by a simple predictive model at the bigining of each control period. This type of control includes various features such as the lack of look up table (LUTs) and closed current loops and the constant switching frequency is achieved through the use of PWM modulation.  The results of the simulation process show a high performance in the steady and transient state function for predictive-DPC control that might be a reasonable alternative to conventional DPC in the field of active power filtering.

Abstract

This paper presents the method of proportional resonant current controller strategy in inverter system application. In this study, the mathematical modelling of the controller is shown in detail. This is important for the modelling in Matlab Simulink. Nowadays, the decrement of power quality is easily found in this inverter system where inverter extensively used as interface circuits. To solve this problem, proportional resonant current controller is the solution. At resonant frequency, this controller has infinite gain which ensures a zero steady-state error in a stationary frame. This will result in minimized load current distortion as well as the harmonic contents. At the end, simulation result shows when using PR current controller, the unwanted harmonics injection are much reduced.
