Abstract

In this paper, the performance of a free-piston generator system with tubular single-phase stator winding is investigated for three different configurations of permanent magnet arrays on the mover: radial, rectangular quasi-Halbach and trapezoidal quasi-Halbach arrays. The optimal shape of the rectangular quasi-Halbach magnetization is obtained by employing an optimization technique called Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA), and the results are compared with the previously developed permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) with magnets of radial magnetization. Then, the resultant design of rectangular quasi-Halbach array, is changed to trapezoidal quasi-Halbach array and its performance is compared with other types of magnet arrays. The employed ICA is based on the analytical model of the magnetic flux distribution in air-gap, and is further verified by a nonlinear transient finite element (FE) model. The FE model has been developed to study the performance of the reciprocating PMLG. The accuracy of the proposed FE model is exemplified by comparing the calculated results with the experimental ones regarding the PMLG with radial magnetization.

Abstract

The regenerative braking energy produced by Light-Rail-Transit (LRT) train is commonly transferred back to power grid via a conventional three-phase inverter (recuperating converter). Although this is a cost saving solution but the ac grid current and voltage waveforms were distorted. Hence passive filters are integrated to mitigate the harmonics. This paper proposed to replace the conventional inverter system with a multilevel converter. Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) converter and Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) are selected to be evaluated in this paper due to their modularity structures. The aim of this study is to determine the most potential multilevel converter to be implemented without additional passive filters. Nine-level CHB and nine-level MMC converters are modeled with MATLAB/Simulink simulation tool. Both converters are modulated with Level-Shifted Pulse Width Modulation technique. The output voltage and current waveforms generated by CHB and MMC are presented with full analysis. It is concluded that MMC converter is more suitable to be used as a recuperating converter. It produces a clean voltage and current waveforms. The voltage and current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) indexes are found approximate to 8% and 3%.

Abstract

This paper presents a nonlinear Integral backstepping control approach based on field oriented control technique, applied to a Double Star Induction Machine ‘DSIM’ feed by two power voltage sources. We present this technique of integral backstepping by using reduced and complete Model of DSIM. The objective is to improve the robustness of machine under internal parameter variation with nonlinear Integral backstepping control. The robustness test results obtained by simulation prove the effectiveness of control with using complete model of DSIM.

Abstract

Harmonics and grid synchronization are one of the major problems faced when dealing with a single-phase system. The development of technology in the PV system makes the consumer to use it in a wide range. The power transferred from PV to grid needs DC to AC conversion process which is done by static devices operating with the higher frequencies that causes the harmonics in the grid connected system. The main aim of the paper is to implement grid synchronization and reduce total harmonic distortion in a single-phase grid connected system. The design of LCL filter is addressed in this paper which depends on current ripple, filter size and switching ripple attenuation.  In order to account the harmonic content, the FFT analysis is made both in analysis and Matlab Simulink. The Proportional Resonant (PR) controller is developed and work along with LCL filter for reducing the harmonic content. The stability of the system with PR is analyzed using root locus and bode plots and results are compared with PI controls. The result shows that PR controller performs better compared to the PI controller for reducing the harmonic content present in the single-phase system and for improving the system stability.

Abstract

A modular cascaded H-bridge PV inverter system is presented in this paper. The modular structure of PV inverter helps in obtaining the maximum output power of PV system along with increase the overall efficiency of the whole system. Moreover to utilize the system up to the best a distributed MPPT controller is attached with each PV panel. As partial shading causes  power imbalance at the converter output that leads to imbalance grid current, a control technique called the modulation compensation is adopted in such a way that if three phase unbalanced voltage varies directly according to unbalanced power, the injected zero sequence voltage components make the grid current balanced.

Abstract

The paper presents the complete modeling and control strategy of variable speed wind turbine system (WTS) driven doubly fed induction generators (DFIG). A back-to-back converter is employed for the power conversion exchanged between DFIG and grid. The wind turbine is operated at the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode its maximum efficiency. Direct power control (DPC) based on selecting of the appropriate rotor voltage vectors and the errors of the active and reactive power, the control strategy of rotor side converter combines the technique of MPPT and direct power control. In the control system of the grid side converter the direct power control has been used to maintain a constant DC-Link voltage, and the reactive power is set to 0. Simulations results using MATLAB/SIMULINK are presented and discussed on a 1.5MW DFIG wind generation system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to design a regulator which enables a power system to track reference signals precisely and to be robust in the presence of uncertainty of system parameters and disturbances. The performances of the proposed controllers (NEWELM and NIMC) are based neural adaptive control and simulated on a two-bus test system and compared with a conventional PI controller with decoupling (PI-D). The studies are performed based on well known software package MATLAB/Simulink tool box. Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System devices (FACTS) are power electronic components. Their fast response offers potential benefits for power system stability enhancement and allows utilities to operate their transmission systems even closer to their physical limitations, more efficiently, with improved reliability, greater stability and security than traditional mechanical switching technology. The most used component of FACTS systems is the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). According to high importance of power flow control in transmission lines, new controllers are designed based on the Elman Recurrent Neural Network (NEWELM) and Neural Inverse Model Control (NIMC) with adaptive control.

Abstract

The given paper presents a hybrid electromagnetic suspension designed for high-speed vacuum transport, where the main levitation force is generated by permanent magnets, while the electromagnet controls the air gap. The computer model is designed by means of MATLAB/Simulink software package, which allows us to simulate the dynamic operational modes of the system. The calculated studies are carried out when the vehicle accelerating to 1000 km/h with account of track irregularities. Permanent magnets incorporated in the system of electromagnetic suspension make it possible to reduce the energy consumption needed for levitation force generation.

Abstract

Batteries play an essential role on most of the electrical equipment and electrical engineering tools. However, one of the drawbacks of lead acid batteries is PbSO4 accumulates on the battery plates, which significantly cause deterioration. Therefore, this study discusses the discharge capacity performance evaluation of the industrial lead acid battery. The selective method to improve the discharge capacity is using high current pulses method. This method is performed to restore the capacity of lead acid batteries that use a maximum direct current (DC) of up to 500 A produces instantaneous heat from 27°C to 48°C to dissolve the PbSO4 on the plates. This study uses an 840 Ah, 36 V flooded lead acid batteries for a forklift for the evaluation test. Besides, this paper explores the behavior of critical formation parameters, such as the discharge capacity of the cells. From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the discharge capacity of the flooded lead acid battery can be increase by using high current pulses method. The comparative findings for the overall percentage of discharge capacity of the batteries improved from 68% to 99% after the restoration capacity.
