Abstract

This paper deals with the design of cascaded 11 level H- bridge inverter. It includes a comparison between the 11 level H-bridge and T-bridge multilevel inverter. The cascaded inverter of higher level is a very effective and practical solution for reduction of total harmonic distortion (THD).These cascaded multilevel inverter can be used for higher voltage applications with more stability. As the level is increased the output waveform becomes more sinusoidal in nature. The inverter is designed using multicarrier sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique for generating triggering pulses for the semiconductor switches used in the device. Through this paper it will be proved that a cascaded multilevel H-bridge topology has higher efficiency than a T-bridge inverter, as whichever source input voltage is provided since input is equal to the output voltage. In T-bridge inverter, the output obtained is half of the applied input, so efficiency is just half as compared to H-bridge. The output waveform is distorted and has higher THD.  The simulation is performed using MATLAB /Simulink 2013 software.

Abstract

Development of electrical power systems led to search for  a new mathematical methods to find the values of PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller. The goal of the paper is to improve the performance of the overall system, through improved the frequency deviation and the voltage deviation characteristics using PID controller, so in this paper are proposed three methods of artificial intelligence techniques for designing the optimal values of PID controller of Load-Frequency-Control (LFC) and Automatic-Voltage-Regulator (AVR), the first is the Firefly Algorithm (FA), the second is the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the third is the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), in addition to these three methods use the conventional (Ziegler–Nichols, Z-N). The FA, GA and PSO are used to obtain the optimal parameters of PID controller based on minimized different various indices as a fitness function, these fitness functions namely Integral-Time-Absolute-Error (ITAE) and Integral-Time-Square-Error (ITSE). Comparison between the results obtained show that FA has better performance to control of frequency deviation and terminal voltage than GA and PSO, so the results observed the FA is more effectual and reliable to determine the optimal values of PID controller.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel hybrid control of a BLDC motor using a mixed sliding mode and fuzzy logic controller. The objective is to build a fast and robust controller which overcome classical controllers’ inconveniences and exploit the fast response of brushless dc motors characterized by an intense torque and fast response time. First the paper study pros and cons of both sliding mode and fuzzy logic controllers. Then the novel controller and its stability demonstration are presented. Finally the proposed controller method is used for the speed control of a BLDC motor 3KW. The obtained results are compared with those of a fuzzy logic and a conventional sliding mode controller. It allows to show performance of the proposed controller in terms of speed response and reaction against disturbances, which is improved more than 5 times without losing stability or altering tracking accuracy

Abstract

The work presented in this paper is devoted to the control of a photovoltaic system connected to grid by a three level diode clamed inverter. A control structure based on three parts: dc link voltage control, power injected control and current control is proposed. In this work, the random PWM strategy is used to generate control signals for the multilevel inverter used us an interface to connect photovoltaic generators to the grid. Numerical simulations are performed using MATLAB / Simulink software, the simulation results for the proposed system indicate  the performances of the proposed control structure, minimization of harmonics by the random PWM strategy applied and injection to the grid more active power by the multilevel inverter structure.

Abstract

A concept of data transmission within downhole telemetry systems in oilfield industry through power lines is presented. Based on this concept, MATLAB/Simulink models simulating communication lines in downhole telemetry systems are built, which can be used as prototypes for development of real systems. The most appropriate signal modulation methods for data transmission in downhole telemetry systems are suggested and discussed. The influence of high-voltage interference on signal transmission through power line from downhole unit to ground based unit is simulated. Usage of error-correcting coding methods for data transmission such as Hamming code, Reed-Solomon code, BCH code is suggested, and its efficiency is demonstrated.

Abstract

This paper presents the application of modular multilevel converter (MMC) as a static compensator (STATCOM) for reactive current control. The current control is mostly achieved using proportional controller, proportional-integral (PI) controller, and hysteresis controller among others. PI controllers have the advantage of low harmonics and small variations.  However, due to the PI controller’s dependency on the system parameters and also due to the variations within the MMC during capacitors voltage control, variation in the MMC performance during the STATCOM non-ideal operations occur. To mitigate this, an improved performance of MMC will be presented using vector-based compensation concept. The proposed control will be introduced to depress the effect of the dynamics of the MMC based STATCOM non-ideal variations considering the impact of the voltage disturbance. This will be achieved by the introduction of voltage variables to subtract the transient variations from PI controllers’ outputs at the grid-interface; thus, improving the performance.

Abstract

Multi-level inverters (MLIs), have gained popularity in the last few years as a result of their low total harmonic distortions (THD) as well as their output waveform which is of high quality. The converter which considers more appropriate for applications of photovoltaic (PV)beyond the varying MLIs arrangementsis the Cascaded H-Bridge-(CHB) (MLI), meanwhile each PV panel may be served as an independent DC supply for any CHB unit. Through the use of MATLAB/Simulink, the efficiency of symmetrical single phase MLI in terms of the number of switches, harmonic content in addition to the stresses of voltage through theswitches that exist at photovoltaic cell by means of input source is enhanced; varying parameters like output current, voltage and power, and THD at 5-level 7-level and 9-level Cascaded MLI are observed. In this paper, attention is paid to a multi-level topologies which is flexible and based on cascaded MLI intended for PV grids connected system. An observation of the output voltage becomes closer to the sine wave as the levels increase, while the increase in the levels of Cascaded Multilevel Inverter causes the total harmonic distortion to decrease.

Abstract

This paper deals with voltage tracking control of DC- DC boost converter based on Fuzzy neural network. Maintaining the output voltage of the boost converter in some applications are very important, especially for sudden change in the load or disturbance in the input voltage. Traditional control methods usually have some disadvantages in eliminating these disturbances, as the speed of response to these changes is slow and thus affect the regularity of the output voltage of the converter. The strategy is to sense the output voltage across the load and compare it with the reference voltage to ensure that it follows the required reference voltages. In this research, fuzzy neural was introduced to achieve the purpose of voltage tracking by training the parameter of controller based on previous data. These data sets are the sensing input voltage of the converter and the value of the output load changes. To establish the performance of proposed method, MATLAB/SIMULINK environments are presented, simulation results shows that proposed method works more precisely, faster in response and elimination the disturbances

Abstract

A dc-dc zeta converter is a switch mode dc-dc converter that can either step-up or step-down dc input voltage. In order to regulate the dc output voltage, a control subsystem needs to be deployed for the dc-dc zeta converter. This paper presents the dc-dc zeta converter control. Unlike conventional dc-dc zeta converter control which produces a controller based on the nominal value model, we propose a convex polytope model of the dc-dc zeta converter which takes into account parameter uncertainty. A linear matrix inequality (LMI) is formulated based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem to find the state-feedback controller for the convex polytope model. Simulation results are presented to compare the control performance between the conventional LQR and the proposed LMI based controller on the dc-dc zeta converter. Furthermore, the reduction technique of the convex polytope is proposed and its effect is investigated.
