Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

The purpose of the research is to figure out the students’ ability in constructing compound-complex sentence in essays writing. The design used in this research is descriptive research with second year students of English language educational program of UNP as the research population. There were 30 students taken as the sample selected by using cluster sampling technique in K5-2018 class. The data were collected through documents of students’ essay writing. The essays were analyzed by the researcher, and it was revised by a valuator and two raters as the validity and reliability of this research. They are the lecturers of English department at UniversitasNegeri Padang. The finding shows that the ability of students in writing compound-complex sentence is in the level of good with the average percentage 79.18%. Most students generally can make compound-complex sentences in their essays writing, but they have problems in: 1) incorrect use of punctuation, especially comma, 2) lacks a subject or a verb in the compound-complex sentence. Therefore, an intensive attention should be given by the lecturer to facilitate the students to practice both writing and grammar by using peer correction.

The purpose of the research is to find out whether or not the PLEASE strategy is effective in the students’ ability in writing analytical exposition text at the second year of SMAN 1 Gunung Talang. This research uses a quantitative with quasi-experimental research with Pre-Test and Post-Test Control Group Design. The populations in this research were second year students’ of SMAN 1 Gunung Talang who were registered in the January-June period of the 2020/2021 school year. The research sample was 35 students of class XI IPA 1 as the experimental class and 35 students of class XI IPS 4 as the control class. The results of the analysis indicated that the mean of post-test score 85.37 was higher than the mean of pre-test score 67.23. Thus, in this research, the test scores were compared using of the t-test formula to determine the effectiveness of using PLEASE strategy ability in writing. Based on the data analysis and the results of the t-test, it was concluded that learning using PLEASE strategy was give the better effect to students ability in writing analytical exposition text at SMAN 1 Gunung Talang because tcount < ttable at a significant level of 0.05. So, it was concluded that the teaching of writing in the second year students of SMAN 1 Gunung Talang by using PLEASE strategy was better effect than without using PLEASE strategy. AbstractThis study aimed to invedtigate senor high school students’ ability in analyzing the meaing of song in English. the participant of this research were 20 students grade eleventh in SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP who take the English subject as their elective subject. This study is descriptive research with qualitative approach. The result of the test given showed that the students’ ability in analyzing the meaning of song in English was in the category of poor. It was shown by the students’ difficulties in elaborating their ideas into some pargaraphs and the students’ difficulties in concluding convincing evidence in the body paragraph.

The learning process is transitioning to distance learning due to the pandemic. Along with online learning practices, teachers make online learning to support the teaching and learning process, such as providing learning materials and delivering learning materials using technology. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of English learning material during full online learning. The sample in this study was taken randomly with 135 students of SMA N 5 Padang, consisting of class 12 MIPA 1-7 and class 12 IPS 1-5. They were given 25 questions to explore their perceptions about English learning material during online learning. Quantitative descriptive is used in this research. The results showed that the students were neutral towards the learning material and the delivery of the material used during online learning. This was indicated by an average score of 2.83. However, they argue that the material used in online classes is more difficult than the material used in face-to-face learning. This makes students cannot decide their perceptions of learning material and delivery of material during online learning.

This study aims to determine the level of speaking motivation of EFL students. The sample of this study consisted of 31 students who had participated in the Speaking Informal Interaction class in the English Department of UNP in the 2019 academic year. This research was a survey by distributing questionnaires and the results of the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively and descriptively. Students were given a questionnaire to find out their level of speaking motivation. The questionnaire used is the Attitude / Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The results of this study indicate that in grades K5-19 in the course Speaking for Informal Interaction they have a high level of speaking motivation and few of them have a moderate level. None of them are at a low level of motivation. It can be concluded that this class has very high speaking motivation.

Many research about Discovery Learning revealed that implementing Discovery Learning in senior high school gave positive impact. Meanwhile, Curriculum also mentioned Discovery Learning as one of learning model. SMPN 8 Padang is one of excellent school in Padang City. English teachers there said that they implemented Discovery Learning in their teaching learning process. This research conducted to describe the implementation of Discovery Learning in junior high school. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The sample was one of English teacher who taught in SMPN 8 Padang. The instruments were video recorder, observation checklist, and note-taking. The findings showed the teacher implemented six steps from preparation procedure of Discovery Learning and six steps from implementation procedure of Discovery Learning.

The objective of this research are to find out the translation quality of students in translating notice and to find out the most difficult notice faced by students in term of accuracy from bahasa Indonesia into English. This study analyzed the translation quality of students from the quality aspects of accuracy, finding equivalence, translation skill, text function, and grammar & style. The data of this research was 15 notices collected from several schools in Padang. This research was conducted by using descriptive research and using translation test as an instrument collected from 40 students who have taken Indonesian-English Translation course in January-June 2020 of English department, Universitas Negeri Padang. To gain the trustworthiness of the research, this research applies the validator and the raters. The result shows that translation quality of students in translating notices was 70 in almost completely successful level. Furthermore, there were three notices which most difficult to translate by students in terms of accuracy.

This study aims to find out the English students’ difficulties in answering TOEFL test of listening comprehension and the factors of the difficulties. The sample of this study was the English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who have taken the TOEFL test from August to December 2020. They were given 63 questions to explore their difficulties. Descriptive quantitative research is used in this study. The result showed that the English department students were disagree that they face difficulty in answering TOEFL test of listening comprehension. However, they agreed that lack of vocabulary, lack of concentration, length and speed of listening and physical condition were the factors that encountered during the process of answering TOEFL test. By guessing the answer and using clues were the strategies they used to overcome the difficulties in answering TOEFL test of listening comprehension.

Storybook is a book used for students to improve reading comprehension through pictures and color. The purpose of this research is to find out whether a storybook effective or not on students' reading comprehension. This research also aims to know students' opinions on storybooks for reading comprehension. This research was pre-experimental to evaluate the influence of a variable on one group by pre-test and post-test design. The population and sample of this research were 23 students on first-grade students of SMPN 2 Padang Panjang. This research used two instruments; reading comprehension test and student's opinion on storybooks for the reading comprehension questionnaire. The result shows that a storybook is effective on students’ reading comprehension. The mean score on the pre-test was 48.22 and the mean score on the post-test was 83.66. The significant value of this research is 0.00. The Sig. (2-tailed) determines there is a significant difference from pre-test to post-test. Supported by students’ opinion on storybooks for reading comprehension questionnaire interpreted as strongly agree with the mean score total is 3.24. The mean score between 3,20 up to 4,00 indicated that a storybook is very good for reading comprehension. The totals mean score was 3.37 that can be interpreted as very good.

Lesson study is an alternative program for teacher to see the social interaction of students’ learning process and to stimulus and development learning practices. This research is focused on issues of using Lesson Study at English department in Universitas Negeri Padang. This research population took in the class at English Department Universitas Negeri Padang. This study also sees the lecturer experience about the issue in using Lesson Study the beneficial and difficulties based on the lecturer perspective. This research is conducted by using descriptive research design. The source of the research were lecturers of English Department Universitas Negeri Padang who have been using Lesson Study in the class. The study shows some issues for lecturers such as time constraints, less understanding of Lesson Study context, campus policy change, and build lecturer’s skills professionally.
