Abstract

This paper discusses about one of strategies in teaching English vocabulary; that is through Concept Definition Map. Concept Definition Map is an instructional strategy which used to teach the students about the concept of a keyword that they knew before. This strategy helps the students to find a new concept of the word by filling out some instructions in accordance with the graphic provided by the teacher. The students are asked to re-call their knowledge about the word until they find a new concept in more detail about it. This strategy is very suitable for learning vocabulary through reading activity; besides learn about a text, the students can also increase their knowledge deeply about the concept of words. Therefore, by implementing this strategy it is expected that the vocabulary knowledge of the students can grow easily.

Abstract

This paper explains about how to implement half a crossword puzzle in teaching vocabulary related to job and people for Elementary School students grade two. This game could be played in two groups, which are group A and B. In this game, teacher distributes different board for each group. Half of each board already filled and the filling boards are the answers of the opposite group. To play this game, group A gives a clue about a word to group B, and then group B tries to guess the clue given by group A. The group that can fill all the blank part correctly will be the winner. This game eases the students in mastering vocabularies related to job and people in English. It could also increase the students’ motivation because this game is interesting and fun.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types of written corrective feedback used by English  teachers of a junior high school on student’s grammatical errors , and problems related to written corrective feedback on grammatical errors from the teacher’s perspectives. This is a descriptive research in which the population was all of English teacher of MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. By using maximal variation sampling technique, all of the teachers, who were five teachers, were chosen to be the sample. The first instrument used was documents which were notebooks and exercise books of the students of the school in the year 2015/2016, and the second instrument was interview with the teachers. From the research, it was found that only three types of the five types were practiced by the teachers. They were, consecutively written from the most frequently used to the least, direct corrective feedback, indirect corrective feedback and metalinguistic feedback with the use of error codes. In addition, problems related to written CF were repetition of errors, students proficiency, student’s attitude, time-consuming, ineffectiveness of existing error feedback practice, and readability of students writing. Therefore, English teacher, future teachers should enrich their knowledge of written corrective feedback, optimizing their correction to optimize the benefits to the students language development and find solution to solve problem related to written corrective on students’ grammatical error.

Abstract

This was a descriptive quantitative research which aimed to identify the English Department 2013 students’ accuracy in translating natural science text from English into bahasa Indonesia and to describe their accuracy problems in translation. From 94 students, 38 among them were chosen randomly as the sample by using quota random sampling. The data in this research were the students’ translations which would be assessed by three inter raters for each text. The researcher used accuracy rating instrument proposed by Nababan in order to analyze the accuracy of students’ translations. The findings showed that there were 30 students who had less accurate translation in translating biology text; 12 students who had less accurate translation in translating physics text; and 31 students who had less accurate translation in translating chemistry text. The rests of the students were categorized into inaccurate translation. Thus, there was no student who had an accurate translation. The findings also showed that the students faced accuracy problems including lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, contextual meaning, and textual meaning. It could be concluded that the students’ accuracy in translating natural science texts were mostly in less accurate category. As a result, the students needed to have more exercises in order to have an accurate translation.

Abstract

The current technological and communication development affects almost all the aspects of human life, and one of them is in education. In English teaching, technological development has a positive impact; it is about teaching English through E-learning. In E-learning, there are a lot of media that can be used by the teacher and the students to support learning English. One of them is through online learning (teaching methods via internet). In online learning, using website can help the teacher and the students to teach and learn English through E-learning. School.duolingo.com is one of the websites that can be used by the teacher and the students as a media to teach and learn English. This website has interesting features that can increase students’ interest and motivate them to learn English. The teacher can also check the progress of the students in school.duolingo.com. Through this paper the author hopes that all teachers to be more creative in using media in order to increase interest and motivation of the students to learn English.

Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of dialogic reading strategy to teach English to Elementary school student’s grade 6 in learning English. The writer will explains the procedures and the advantages of dialogic reading strategy. Grover Whitehurst a psychology found this strategy. This strategy uses the acronym PEER (Prompt, Evaluate, Extend and Repeat) and CROWD (Completion prompts, Recall prompts, Open-ended prompts, Wh-prompts, and Distancing prompts). This strategy helps students to use more words, speak in longer sentences, improving their vocabulary and practice their English.

Abstract

In general, the students of English Department have the ability to write English well. However, there are still some aspects that must be consideredin writing. Therefore, this study aimed to look at the extent to which students use the sentencestypes in writing an essay. Another aim was to analyze the problems occurred in using the sentencestypes. This research was a descriptive study with research subjects were 22essays of Education 2 Class students in year 2014/2015. Data were collected by analyzing sentences in the essay which were the result of semester exam ofa writing class. Based on the research, there were four sentencestypesin the students’ writing: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. Based on the results of the study, it was found that simple sentence was the most sentence types commonly written by the students in writing, by contrast, compound-complex sentencewas the least sentence types written by the student. In addition, there were two problems that occurred to write the sentence types, ie run-on and fragment. Both of these problems were found in all parts of the essay: introduction, main body and conclusion. By doing so, it is expected to the lecturers to pay more attention to the use of different sentence types in students’ writing.

Abstract

In this paper, the author discusses the use of 'mime game' in teaching English vocabulary for young learners. To teach young learners, we must first understand their characteristics and needs. The fact is that young learners love to play. Therefore, learning through playing is the most appropriate way to teach them. One of them is to use the game called as "mime game". Teaching through "mime game" will be begun with classes will be formed into a half circle and then a student will be given a word. Furthermore, the chosen students will be in the middle class while giving expression by using gesture and the other students try to guess the word in question. Young learners are also very fond of moving and imagining. By using "mime game", young learners will get moved by using their own way and imagine to guess a certain word. Basically, young learners will easily remember what they learn when they feel happy, comfortable, love, and enjoy what they do.

Abstract

Speaking ability is very important in English learning to make it easier for someone to exchange information or ideas with others. However, there are still many high school students having problems in speaking. Therefore, the teachers’ teaching techniques should consider increasing students’ motivation, confidence and maximizing speaking activities in the classroom. The use of short cartoon movies is one of the teaching techniques to help teachers tackle the problems. In this technique, students will watch a short cartoon movie based on the topics to be studied. After discussing the events in the movie, the teacher will lead students to be able retelling the movie in pairs in front of the class. By using this technique, students can increase their confidence to speak, reduce boredom due to the use of interesting media and also to improve their behavior through moral values in the story.

Abstract

In teaching English there are some common problems that found by the teacher in classroom, like students have lack motivation in learning English, teacher finds difficulty to choose an interesting method, a monotonous learning. Those problem make the students think that English as a difficult subject. Studying in the classroom is not limited with the use of paper, book or pen only. Using technology-based media and internet like application can be a good solution and give positive impact in teaching English. One of application based on the use of internet is Lino.it. Lino.it is software which formed in virtual wall and it can be placed some notes, pictures and videos. Teacher can use this software to support the use of black board or teacher can focus the teaching and learning with Lino.it. The writer wrote this paper with purpose: tell how teacher use Lino.it application in teaching process. The writer also hopes this application can make the teacher to be more creative in utilization media and develop the students’ learning quality.
