Abstract

This study investigated the students’ difficulties in answering structure and written expression of TOEFL by last year English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The aims of this study were to find the students’ difficulties in answering structure and written expression of TOEFL and to find the reasons or causes of the students’ mistakes. The participants of this study were 25 students. This descriptive study used two instruments in the research; structure sub-test and interview. This study used proportional stratified sampling to choose the sample. The study found that the last year English students of Universitas Negeri Padang had problems in 11 items among 18 items assessed. There were three 3 the most difficult items; negation, reduced form, and parallel structure items. The reasons behind the students’ mistakes were ignorance, careless, dubious, oblivious and miscast. The first two reasons were the biggest causes of students’ mistakes.

Abstract

The use of technology in the term of teaching is really helpful. The use of technique with technology based in teaching English is expected to improve the ability of students in learning English. Speaking is one of the basic ability which is not easy to master without appropriate technique. One of the obstacles for students in speaking English is students are lack of understanding of what they say, so they do not really comprehend speaking skill thoroughly. Storytelling is one of the techniques that is commonly used in teaching English. With the use of technology, storytelling can be digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is a storytelling that is produced in the form of video. In this paper, students are asked to make a story about his friend, which is the final result is in the form of video. In its stages, firstly, students are asked to make a draft about the video they are going to make. After completing the draft, students continue to the next stage which is editing the video. It consists of music background, quotes, the voice over, or also pictures. By implementing this technique, students are expected can improve their speaking skill in learning English.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the reading ability of the fifth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018 in reading an expository text. This research was a descriptive research. The data collected through a reading comprehension test.  There were five indicators tested; identifying topics, finding the main idea, identifying supporting details, making inference and identifying writers’ purpose. The result shows that students' ability in identifying the topics is good, (the mean score is 71.48), students' ability in finding the main idea is good enough, (the mean score is 65.70), the ability of students in identifying supporting detail is good enough, (the mean score is 68.65), student ability in making inference is enough (the mean score is 59.36) and student ability in identifying writers’ purpose is good enough (the mean score is 68.75). Thus, the results of this research indicated the students’ reading ability of the fifth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018 is good enough, where the total mean of students’ score is 66.72. Key words: Reading comprehension, students’ reading ability, expository text.

Abstract

This paper discussed the usage of guessing game in teaching writing, especially descriptive text. Student in junior high school like playing but tend to easily get bored. These required teachers to be more creative and not monotonous in explaining materials. Game can be used to attract students’ attention. However in doing so teachers need to choose the appropriate an useful game, especially for teaching writing descriptive text. Guessing game is appropriate and effective to be used in the classroom. It is a game in which a students or a groups of students guess a number of information such as titles, words, or prices. By playing this game, students can learn by playing. The researcher expects that teachers can add more creativity in teaching descriptive text by enganging students in interesting activities. The students are also expected to develop ideas from their activities easier.

Abstract

Speaking competence is one of the basic competences for senior high scool students. However, there are some problems that mostly emerge in the teaching of speaking competence, specifically in reading news item text. The problems are the lack of students English vocabularies, their lack of comprehension in using grammatically correct sentence and the discomfort they feel caused by the lack of creativity of teachers in managing the learning process in classroom. In order that students could comprehend news item text, the writer selects group investigation as a technique used in teaching this topic. This technique is applied in whilst-teaching phase by giving students half of the news text as their task to investigate the text given. By using group investigation, it is expected that teachers could maximalize their roles in increasing  students’ speaking competence. The writer also hopes that the technique used could give positive contibutions in teaching speaking competences in order to improve students’ competence in conveying the the news.

Abstract

Media is an important role in the teaching and learning process. Media is used by teachers as facilitators or connectors in delivering materials to the students. Most of media that teachers use is still less effective, because too much time. So that, the appropriate media of teaching and learning is needed to improve teacher’s professionalism. In this presentation, the teacher explains the material with twenty slides where each slide is twenty seconds. At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher introduces topic to be studied first. The teacher then explains the material using Pecha Kucha presentation. By using this media requires students to concentrate more in listening to what is explained by the teacher, as well as professionalism of teachers in using media in learning.

Abstract

Senior High School students commonly have difficulty in listening to a descriptive text. It’s due to the learners feel most threatened, panic, and they worry about accuracy in listening. In listening activity the teachers usually ask the students to only listen to the audio rather than make note taking while listening. Whereas, note taking is very useful to do while listening because they will catch the idea of what the speaker says. In addition, note taking will make the students easier in listening descriptive text so that it can be improve their motivation.

Abstract

Analytical exposition text is one of genre text that is learned by english department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The students must be able to write this genre text. The aim of this study is to analyze the ability of students in writing an analytical exposition text.  It was a descriptive quantitative research conducted for third semester English departments students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research focused on how is the students’ ability in writing the thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence of analytical exposition text. The population of this research is third semester English department of Unicersitas Negeri Padang, and the sample was from educational class, it was K-3 class which consists of 20 students. the students were asked to write analytical exposition text and then students’ writing were analyzed by using the rubric of analytical exposition text which consists of four aspect, that are thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence. Based on the findings, there are four students who are in excellent level, five students in proficient level, ten students in fair level, and one student in inadequate level. Overall, the ability of third semester English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang is in proficient level.

Abstract

This research is a quantitative-correlational research that measures the stage of the motivation of the students in learning speaking subject and their speaking ability in English. In addition the population of this research is the under-graduate students of English for education department, Faculty Language and Arts academic year 2017, Universitas Negeri Padang and the sample is chosen by using cluster sampling. Furthermore, the problem backgrounded this research is how the relationship between students’ motivation in learning speaking and the speaking ability. For this research, motivation is treated as the x variable and speaking ability as y variable. The instruments used in this research are questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to measure the motivation and test for the speaking ability. The questionnaire used is adapted from the The Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) by Gardner. The questionnaire was analyzed by using likert scale and speaking test by using speaking rubrics by Brown. The result of this researchshows that there is a relationship between the motivation and speaking ability of tye students. It is shown by the correlational coefficient (rxy) with number 0,002. However, the relationship is not significant because when it is compared with rtable with (α) 5%, the number is 0,3494. It means that rtable > rxy. Thus, it can be concluded that the relationship between x variable and y variable is not significant, Keywords: speaking ability, motivasion, correlational research

Abstract

This paper describes the use of realia in teaching speaking. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to use realia in increasing the ability and motivation of junior high school students in teaching speaking. The main problems that faced by students are low of motivation and lack of vocabulary. As a result, the students will afraid to speak. The teachers have to find some strategies or media to solve those problems. One of the media can be used by teacher is realia. Realia is a real object used in the classroom to build background knowledge and vocabulary of the students. This media can be an alternative media in teaching English to the students because it allows the students to use their senses. It simply means that students can see and touch the objects directly and it will be last longer in students mind.. The use of realia as a media in teaching speaking English to junior high school students brings many advantages to the English classroom. For example it creates a lively and enjoyable classroom that will increase students’ interest and motivation to speak.
