Abstract

This study is aimed to examine the written subject and verb agreement errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Al Istiqamah Simpang Ampek, West Pasaman when they were writing a recount text. Error analysis technique was carried out in this research in order to find the proportion of each type of error made by students. The research is a descriptive study with 30 students participating in the study. The instrument used is writing test about recount text. All subject verb agreement errors that appear in students writing are analyzed using Surface Strategy Taxonomy introduced by Dulay et.al. The findings showed that (1) the students constributed the three types of errors in term of subject verb agreement in their recount writing, those were (a) omission (45 error / 26%), (b) addition (10 error/ 6%), (c) misformation (118 error / 68 %), then there was no error in misordering found in this study. (2) The sources of the errors are inter-lingual transfer (45/ 26%) and intra-lingual transfer (128/ 74%). The research reveals that the students are still having difficulties in using correct patterns of subject and verb agreement in their writing.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the type and the level of speaking anxiety faced by the forth semester students of English Education Study Program of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This descriptive research used a quantitative descriptive method. The research instruments are questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire used in this research is adapted from the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) designed by Horwitz. It consists of 33 statements which have three categories as well as communication apprehension, fear of speaking test, and fear of feedback by peers and lecturer. Based on the research analysis, it was found that the level of students’ speaking anxiety is in the middle level with the percentage was 82%. It was significantly different with other levels which had 9% for low level and also 9% for high level. The types faced by the respondents were in the fear of speaking test (44%), communication apprehension (34%), and feedback by peers and lecturer (22%). The dominant typeof speaking anxiety was fear of speaking test. However, after having the depth interview about their speaking anxiety, the research showed that all types of speaking anxiety were in the relationship. Key words: Speaking, Anxiety

Abstract

This paper discuss one technic English language teaching especially in Senior High School by ussing “self assessment system. The step of teaching in this technic can be one of activity and can interested students to studied English language with fun and motivated. This activity consist of two meetings, first meeting the teacher explain about self assessment and video recording. the students also discuss the expression will they use in their activity. For recording the video, the students free to record in everywhre they want and they can express all the expression. In second meeting, the students watch the recording and assess all performance or their ability in speaking English. This activity can enhance theier critical thinking and assess their friends ability. This activity are fun activity and can motivate students to speaking.Key Words: video recording, self assessment, speaking.AbstrakMakalah  ini membahas salah satu teknik pengajaran bahasa inggris khususnya bagi siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas melalui teknik “self assessment system”. Urutan kegiatan pada teknik ini dapat menjadi salah satu kegiatan yang dapat menarik minat siswa untuk belajar bahasa inggris dengan semangat dan termotivasi tanpa merasa terbebani. Kegiatan ini terdiri dari dua kali pertemuan, pada pertemuan pertama guru memberikan pengetahuan tentang self assessment dan video recording, siswa juga akan mendiskusikan ekspresi yang akan digunakan dalam kegiatan mereka. Untuk merekam drama mereka, siswa diberi kebebasan untuk memilih tempat mereka masing-mas[1]ing dan bekerja di luar jam sekolah, dan siswa bisa meng-ekpresikan diri mereka. Pertemuan kedua, siswa menonton rekaman drama mereka dan memberikan penilaian terhadap rekaman tersebut.Teknik ini diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi guru bahasa Inggris, sehingga menambah teknik mereka dalam pengajaran berbicara. Dan juga bagi siswa diharapkan teknik ini dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris, motivasi dan percaya diri,berfikir kritis serta siswa dapat merasa senang belajar bahasa Inggris di sekolah atau di luar lingkungan sekolah.

Abstract

Many people may find some difficulties to share their ideas or opinion through oral language. Even though they have something to speak, they do not know how to express it. They also have problems related to lack of participation and low motivation in speaking. Therefore, a teacher should select the best technique that can encourage students and increase their motivation to speak. The teacher can use “Pair Work” to teach English speaking. This technique demands students to be active to speak based on the material has been given. Through this technique, students should practice to speak in order to give agreeing and disagreeing opinion. By apliying this technique in speaking class, it will make the class fun and interesting. The objective of this paper is to explain how to use pair work technique in teaching speaking to junior high school students.

Abstract

Grammar error is one of the difficulties experienced by students in the writing process. The main objective in this study was to find the usual grammar mistakes made by English language students in 2017 at Padang State University in writing discussion texts. Theoretically, this research was conducted to identify, classify and show the proportion of each type of error made by students. The type of research used is qualitative research with descriptive methods. The research subjects were students of English language education at Universitas Negeri Padang, specifically students in the K.2-2017 class. The instrument used is documentation of student writing about discussion text. All grammatical errors that appear in student writing are analyzed using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy introduced by Dulay et.al. The findings showed that the total error is 260 errors. Most errors were omission (50 errrors / 50.77%), second place was misformation error (75 errors / 28.85%), third place was addition error (39 errrors / 15%), and the last was misordering error (14 error / 5.38%). Based on these results, it can be concluded that students still experience great difficulties in learning the grammar structure in the writing process.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ ability in using transition signals in argumentative essay. This research used descriptive qualitative. The population of this research was the second semester of English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang, Faculty of languages and arts, who registered on 2018 that education program. This research sample is 22 students. Sample were taken using random sampling which students that choose argumentative essay when last term examination. Data were collected by taking from some lectures who teach paragraph writing. Based on the data obtained,the students’ ability in using transition signals in argumentative essay is average (60%)

Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini adalah penelitian deskripstif yang menggambarkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan kalimat-kalimat dalam recipe text dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Adapun populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa S1 Tata Boga, Jurusan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Fakultas Pariwisata dan Perhotelan, tahun akademik 2014 di Universitas Negeri Padang dan subjek dipilih dengan menggunakan metode total sampling. Masalah yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa menerjemahkan recipe text dan apa saja masalah yang mereka hadapi dalam menerjemahkan recipe text. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan dan apa saja masalah yang dihadapi dalam menerjemahkan recipe text. Adapun instrument yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah translation test. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan 0 (0%) dari mahasiswa mempunyai kemampuan menerjemah bagus, 40 (93,02%) berkemampuan kurang bagus, dan 3 (6,97%) mempunyai kemampuan tidak bagus. Dari data tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa Tata Boga, Jurusan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Fakultas Pariwisata dan Perhotelan, UNP mempunyai kemampuan kurang bagus dalam menerjemah. Oleh karena itu, mereka perlu banyak diajarkan cara menerjemah dengan baik agar mereka dapat menghasilkan terjemahan yang akurat.

Abstract

Students' ability to understand text is very low, because of three factors. The first factor is the lack of students' motivation to read, this problem can cause the decreasing of students' effort to understand text. The lack of practice can cause students not able to comprehend the text and explain what the text is about. The second factor is the lack of students' knowledge of vocabulary and grammar that can cause them to not able to understand the meaning of sentences in the text. The third factor is the methods that teachers using in their teaching "reading comprehension" activity which still can not motivate students to active in reading. This paper offer a strategy that known as "determining importance". This strategy can help students to find the important information among unimportant information in the text. Teacher can begin the lesson activity by activating the students' prior knowledge, then teach them how to use the strategy properly. The result of this strategy can improve students' ability to comprehend the text.

Abstract

This research aims to discover SMK students’ ability in using grammar, especially sentence structures, in producing oral procedure text. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population was 125 grade twelve students majoring in the food and beverage service study program at SMKN 9 Padang who were divided into 6 classes: XII JB 1, XII JB 2, XII JB 3, XII JB 4, XII Ps 1 and XII Ps 2. The sample was obtained by using random cluster sampling technique which resulted in XII Ps 1 class which had 28 students. The data were collected by giving them a speaking test to produce oral procedure text. The result showed that students’ ability in using declarative sentence in producing oral procedure text was in poor level (85,71%). Meanwhile, students’ ability in using imperative sentence in producing oral procedure text was in good level (46,43%).

Abstract

 Abstract English is the important language that has to be mastered. There are four skills in language learning; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking is one of language skills which is very important to be mastered by students. However, students still find some difficulties in speaking, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and motivation. Therefore, teacher should select the appropriate media that can solve all the problems. Love Song is chosen by the writer as the appropriate media since it can solve all the problems faced by students. In using Love Song, the teacher plays a song and asks the students to play the missing lyrics game. After that, students find the meaning of the song. Then, teacher explains the material (simple present tense), and teacher asks students to find out the simple present tense in the lyrics of Everything I do (I do it for you). Next, students are given an individual task to memorize the song. After doing the individual task, the teacher asks students about the moral value of the song. The last, teacher gives homework to memorize another love song and conclude the lesson with the students. By using love song in English class, teaching and learning process will be fun and interesting. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to use Love song in teaching English for Senior High School students. Key Words: English, Speaking, Love Song, Senior High School Students
