Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This study aims to determine students’ pronunciation error in pronouncing English diphthong sounds made by students of English language Program Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is descriptive quantitative with 219 population. The sample of this study was 25 students chosen by various origin who were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through pronunciation test and analyzed by using formula and the rubric score, while the students’ recordings were transcribed. The finding of this research showed that ability of students in pronouncing diphthong were fair (60.00%), good (24.00%), poor (12.00%) and very good only one students (2.00%). Therefore, it can be concluded that there are eight kinds of diphthong pronunciation error and various result of students’ ability. As the result, students need to practice more in pronouncing diphthong in order to improve their ability.

This research is quasi-experimental research is aimed to find out the effect of video blog as media on students’ speaking skill and the effectiveness of video blog as media on improving students’ speaking skill at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument of this research is speaking test that is conducted twice, pre-test and post-test. The test had 3 topics that student should pick one of them, the test will be rate by using rating score which adapted from Brown and Blaz. Based on the test data analysis by using independent sample test in SPSS 25, it state that the students’ who are taught by using video blog as media are better than students’ who are taught by using conventional media. The significance of the test is 0.000 which is lower than the significance level that is 0.05 with 5% of degree. Furthermore, is also found that the students’ score is improving especially for students in experimental class which gained 10.8 of their average score. . Key words: Speaking, Video Blog.

This study aimed to analyse the errors on pre-service teachers’ classroom language while having field practice in senior high schools. The analysis was conducted by adapting James (1998) Target Modification Taxonomy. Classroom language including the simple instructions and the questions given by pre-service teachers. The participants of this research are five pre-service teachers from four different schools. This study was descriptive qualitative research. The instrumentation of this research were observation, document and interview. The study analyzed pre-service teachers’ classroom language by categorizing the errors into types followed by the causes of each error. Some problems related to pre-service teachers’ classroom language were also found. The problems found hindered the optimal use of classroom language. The findings of the research showed that there were grammatical and lexical errors occured. The grammatical errors were omission (50%), overinclusion (21.73%), misselection (8.70%) and misplacement (4.34%). Some ellipsis (15.21%) were also detected.

This research was aimed to find out the difficulties that mostly faced by students in listening comprehension and the factors which cause the difficulties at English language and literature department FBS UNP. This study employed descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this research were K-2 Class which consists of 32 students selected by using cluster sampling technique. The data was collected from questionnaire and interview. The researcher distributed the questionnaire to all members of the class. After that, the researcher chose six students to be interviewed. The results of this study showed that the difficulties that the students faced in listening comprehension were related into three categories, they were the listening material, the listener, and the physical setting. Besides, the factors which cause students’ difficulties in listening comprehension were depend on others, shame to ask the lecturer about the material, having emotional disturbances, the lecturer explains the material too quickly, lack of reward and reinforcement, and unfocused.

Writing is an important skill that is needed in order to share and convey ideas into written form. As a writer, the students should be able to give their thoughts through writing. However, many students have difficulties in writing the text and they do not know how to generate adn develope their ideas. It is because they are confused to develope their ideas into a paragraph. That is why this paper is conducted on order to explain how to use Story Pyramid Strategy in teaching writing narrative to senior high schools students. Story pyramid is pre-writing activity that is done before writing. It is an outline that contains some instructions to describe the important information from a story such as the main character, the setting and the major events in the plot. It means that this strategy assists students to produce and arrange the ideas clearly before they start writing. it believed that this strategy can help many students in improving their writing ability.

This research aimed to analyze the typical classroom management of an English teacher in a vocational high school in Padang. The sample of this research was two English teachers, teacher A, and teacher B. They taught the tenth-grade students, once a week, for 3x45minutes. The data were analyzed by using the theory of Wright and collected by taking video and field notes. This study limited the day to gain the data in six days. Finally, it showed that teachers in SMK 3 Padang were having a different style of classroom management personally, and found was a teacher in SMKN 3 Padang has issue in time management and discipline.

This study aimed to analyze verb errors and types of errors made by senior high school students in writing a text. Source of data in this research is 27 pieces of students writing task written by EFL Senior High School (In this study; XII MIPA 7 SMAN 1 Padang in Academic Year 2019/ 2020). This research was descriptive research used in analysing verbs errors in the texts. The instruments used in this research was students’ writing task. The errors were classified into four categories based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy of Dulay’s Theory. Those were omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Then, the percentage of verb errors was used to determine the verb errors and types of errors. The findings of the research showed that all of types of errors found in students’ writing. There were 164 verb errors foud. The most type of errors was misformation errors. It was followed by omission errors. The, the least errors were addition followed by misordering errors. Then, Another finding was main verb as the highest verb types which mostly errors in students’ writing.

That English becomes the most preferred language to use in this digital era and the demand of the availability of various books (textbook, journal, and e-book, etc.) in order to fulfil one of requirements to become a world class university inspired some grammar lecturers in English Department of UNP to develop an interactive grammar e-book. In order to find out whether the interactive grammar e-book was designed according to the criteria and the users’ needs, the feedback from grammar lecturers on the e-book are demanded. This study aimed to find out the lecturers’ perception on interface, interactivity, content materials and exercises, as well as practicality of the interactive grammar e-book. This survey study involved six grammar lecturers at English Department who were chosen selectively. Questionnaire containing 70 items and followed by four scales was distributed to the lecturers. The data were analyzed by finding the mean scores for each item. Then, the mean scores were converted into degree of perception. It is found that lecturers have positive perceptions on the five aspects. However, there are some suggestions given by them who gave negative response on questionnaire. Thus, there is a little improvement needed on the e-book according to the lecturers’ perception.

This study aimed to analyse the use of grammatical cohesive devices in an analytical exposition text written by eleventh grade students of MAN 2 Padang based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory (1976). Grammatical cohesive devices was used in order to write a cohesive text for helping both writer and reader. The participants of this research were 65 eleventh grade students in MAN 2 Padang. This study was descriptive qualitative research used in analysing the grammatical cohesive devices in an analytical exposition text. The instrumentations of this research were There were some instrumentations used in this research such as: writing test, table analysis and formulation. The findings of the research showed that all of the grammatical cohesive devices; reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction; used by the students in writing a text. There were 1.225 grammatical cohesive used by the students in writing an analytical exposition text. However, ellipsis and substitution were rarely used in that text.
