Abstract

The interaction between dentists and patients has been a common issue. Nevertheless, the study regarding the Critical Discourse Analysis on utterances used by dentists when taking care of patients remains unknown. This study aims to discover (1) the experience of fresh-graduate dentists in learning how to interact or communicate with patients at their undergraduate program (past experience) and (2) how they use utterances in taking care of patient (current experience). In achieving the goals of the study, researchers employed narrative inquiry as the design of this study and used open-ended questions as a means of collecting data. The collected data was then analyzed in regard to the Critical Discourse Analysis to find whether the utterances used in taking care of patients were relevant to the knowledge they obtained in undergraduate program. Outcome of this study reveals that the experience regarding communication between dentists and patients, both in undergraduate program and at current practice, are interconnected to each other.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the students’ and teacher’s challenges in learning EFL in distance learning context for 162 eleventh grade students and one English teacher in SMK Nusa Dua Toya Anyar Kubu, Karangasem in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study used mixed-method as the data were collected through questionnaire for the quantitative data and interview for qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed by using SPSS to find the mean score and used TCR guidelines of categorization developed from Sugiyono (2017), while the qualitative data were analyzed according to the steps by Miles and Huberman (1994). The result of students’ challenges are found that the challenges related to instructional variables (lack of explanation from teachers and limited opportunity to practice four English basic skills) were categorized the highest challenges experienced by the students compared to in institutional and individual variables. In addition, the result for the teacher’s data analysis found that the evaluation and assessment variables are the highest challenges compared to access and motivation variables. Understanding the role of teacher as the instructor in distance learning is important to improve students’ ability and can minimize the students’ challenges in distance learning. Abstract

The podcast is one of the popular tools of technology that can be used to support English language learning, especially in listening skills. Students can access podcasts everywhere and anytime to train their listening skills. Therefore, this study was employed to investigate the pre-service EFL teachers' perception of using podcasts as a learning medium in improving listening skills. The study was conducted on students of the English Language Education Department of Universitas Kristen Indonesia in May 2021. The respondents of this study were 50 students in the 2017-2019 batches. This study collected the quantitative data by distributing a questionnaire that consisted of 30 items. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The result of this study showed that students hold a positive perception of using Podcasts as a learning medium in improving listening skills. Therefore, podcasts can motivate the students to become better listeners, and more confident when listening to the native speaker in the Podcast. The findings also indicated that it is essential for teachers to use appropriate instruction to achieve the best results. This media will assist both the teacher and the students in the learning process.

Abstract

Technology is playing an increasing role in education worldwide and is having a growing impact on the design and delivery of English language teaching. Teachers are expected to understand how to integrate technology into their teaching as well as know how to help learners make use of resources such as media and the internet to improve their learning of all four skills. As such technology offers both new challenges as well as new opportunities for both teachers and learners. This article investigates the use of Wattpad in language teaching and explores more from the perspective of teachers and students in the online classroom. It offers teachers and learners to vary the process of the teaching and learning processes by using technology-mediated teaching and learning. However, this study presents a mini research project on how the teacher of one school has used technology as a medium to teach the students in online classes recently due to Covid 19. Teachers and students should be collaborative so the process of teaching-learning able to run well. It will become a big challenge for the teacher to engage the students during the teaching process.

Abstract

The debate between effectiveness of explicit and implicit teaching has taken a center stage in the second language acquisition literature over a long period of time. Most of such debates center on grammar teaching and very few discuss suprasegmental features especially, syllable structure. All languages have some sort of syllabicity; however, the phonetic characteristics of syllables differ across languages. The difference can be seen in onset and coda. The current study examines the effects of explicit instruction on the acquisition of English syllable structure among Ghanaian learners of English. The paper investigates the efficiency of interventions through explicit teaching on the English syllable structure in a classroom setting. English syllables have some structures that are absent in the first language of the participants and these structures pose difficulties for speakers who learn English. This paper explores those structures and adopts explicit instruction as an intervention to remedy the difficulties. The investigation is done on participants who are Ghanaian speakers learning English. The study discovers that in disyllabic words there is a preference of trochaic syllables over iambic syllables, the acquisition of onsets is easier than acquisition of codas and finally, explicit teaching is very effective in the classroom.

Abstract

This concurrent embedded strategy of mixed methods design described the ESL learners’ academic efficacy, thoughts and experience and achievement in the BL delivery modality. Fifty learners were purposively selected based on the set criteria. To determine the learners’ academic efficacy, the adapted survey questionnaire for academic self-efficacy scale (ASES) for junior high school learners developed by Mr. Angelo Reyes Dullas of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Philippines was used, while a semi-structured questionnaire prompted the participants to describe their experiences during the blended learning modality. The collected quantitative data were analyzed and interpreted using the mean, frequency counts, and Pearson r while coding and theming for the qualitative data. The study found that the participants' mean grades were very satisfactory and outstanding during the first and second quarters, respectively. A calculated r-value of 0.78, strongly positively correlated, indicates that the learners’ academic efficacy goes with their performance. This means that the high the academic efficacy, the better the performance in English. The researcher has drawn at least five major themes based on the learners’ narrations. These are the self-directed learning is the new trend, internet connection at loss during OL, academic motivation makes learners go on, web-based educational sites as the source of information, and the student-teacher collaborative learning. This strengthens that BL is an opportunity for learners to learn amid the country’s health crisis.

Abstract

Online reading strategies have been a crucial issue in EFL learning because reading strategies are essential for students reading comprehension and the increasing penetration of information and communication technology into foreign language learning has transformed reading and current studies have shown that online text reading requires new strategies. This article presented the findings of a systematic review of 20 research on online reading strategies in EFL learning published in 2011-2021. The findings of the studies focusing on the strategy used for EFL online reading show that the most frequently used reading strategies were problem-solving strategies, which is followed by global reading strategies, and finally support strategies as the least frequently used strategies. The findings concerning the correlation of online reading strategies and other variables of reading are inconclusive because each of the studies correlates online reading with different reading variables. Results of studies focusing on the effectiveness of online reading strategies are also inconclusive because each of them investigated the effect of online reading strategies on different variables. Thus, more and more studies are needed to provide a clearer understanding of online reading strategies.

Abstract

Indonesia is a diverse country consisting of various cultures and also religions. Currently, there are six official religions recognized by the Indonesian government, which are Islam, Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhi, and Confucianism. Thus, it is important for English book writers to design an English textbook that not only accommodates the needs of the students but also contains learning content which are representing all those varied religions and cultures in order to represent the background of the students. This study focuses on the portrayal of religious content found in the six Indonesian English textbooks published by the government and private sector. The purpose of the study is to assess, whether the six Indonesian English textbooks fairly distribute religious content through the textbooks’ visual illustrations or not. Visual content analysis was used as the methodology of the study to answer the research question. Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that all the six Indonesian textbooks did not fairly distribute the religious contents. Some religions were having little to no representation in the textbooks. The religions portrayed throughout the contents were Islam, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
